Trans women will be banned from female hospital wards under the Health Secretary’s plans to restore “common sense” to the NHS.
On Tuesday, Steve Barclay will announce proposals to push back against “wokery” in the health service that has led to women’s rights being increasingly sidelined.
The changes would give men and women the right to be cared for on wards only shared by people of their own biological sex, and to have intimate care provided by those of the same sex.
Mr Barclay said the plan would mean the return of “a common-sense approach to sex and equality”, ensuring that women’s dignity was protected and their voices heard.
The proposals follow concerns from patients and staff about biological men being allowed on to women’s hospital wards. In 2021, NHS guidance said trans patients could be placed on single-sex wards on the basis of the gender with which they identified.

I clicked on the link and could scroll and read it all.

For those who can't, try Airplane Mode and archive . ph.

Meanwhile I'll archive it and post the link. Bear with. This looks like an important one.

OP, thanks for posting that interesting article. I hope it’s not just speechifying and that the Govt actually puts actions behind the words.

Hope it gets a good airing on the morning news programmes. Too many people still don't know it happens and don't believe you when you tell them.

I thought I'd felt a tremendous disturbance in the woke. As though a million toys were thrown out of prams. It almost makes me want to be on twitterX 😊

I know. The idea of giving a certain subset of men their own room for no reason is ridiculous.

Still, I bet as soon as it starts to inconvenience people other than women, ie real people, it'll get short shrift.

in the meantime, as far as NHS is concerned, transwomen are very definitely not women.

Ha, beautifully written, thanks for that!😂

DiabolicalFinial · 03/10/2023 07:56

Have any of the usual TRAs unloaded about this on X/Twitter at all? Not on, so can’t see what the reaction has been…

highame · 03/10/2023 08:08

It looks as though there is a definite move to take on the whole mess.

FrancescaContini · 03/10/2023 08:10

Thank you, Emma 🤩

Glamourreader · 03/10/2023 08:10

I'm so happy about this 😃like a burden has been lifted

FrancescaContini · 03/10/2023 08:13

I’m really happy to know that should I ever become incapacitated and unable to advocate for myself, NO MAN will be carrying out any care including INTIMATE care on me. Or my female relatives or friends or DDs.

It should never have been allowed to be the case.

Plankingplanks · 03/10/2023 08:16

Great news. I just looked on the NHS ovarian and cervical cancer pages and they haven't been recently changed according to the update bit at the bottom, so when have they changed to ensure they are woman focused?

RainWithSunnySpells · 03/10/2023 08:22

They need to get this done before the General Election. It's so important to so many vulnerable hospital patients.

Is care covered too?

RainWithSunnySpells · 03/10/2023 08:39

ArabellaScott · 03/10/2023 08:24

Is care covered too?

I only read about hospitals and wards, but you are correct Arabella intimate care at home should also have a true single sex option for anyone who wants it.

ETA. Plus nursing homes, hospices etc.

FrancescaContini · 03/10/2023 08:43

ArabellaScott · 03/10/2023 08:24

Is care covered too?

The article says “..intimate care covered by those of the same sex too” - so it seems so?

But of course it needs to be any setting where people might need intimate care: home, GP surgery, hospices, care homes…

dimorphism · 03/10/2023 09:28

Is this actually going to happen though? Last time I looked the government seemed to have lost control of the NHS.

They told them to get rid of the waste of money that is EDI and they haven't done it, despite a massive shortfall in nurses which the millions that goes to EDI staff could be used for (i.e. pay nurses a bit more).

Meceme · 03/10/2023 11:24

This has just been confirmed in Steve Barclays speech. He has also said that NHS has been told to replace the word woman in all information, marketing, health screening etc that is aimed at women e.g cervical screening. He also stated that care should be based on biological differences and the NHS should support the privacy, dignity and safety of all patients especially referencing women.

Meceme · 03/10/2023 11:28

He said they intend to 'change the NHS Constitution' to reflect this.
The BBC response - is this possible in practice?

Meceme · 03/10/2023 11:33

Michelle Donlan Technology Minister just clearly said sex and gender are different and announced a review into the use of sex and gender terminology in scientific research.
She stated the belief that you can change sex is scientifically illiterate.
The tide is changing.

Yes, it's one thing to see all this coming out at once, there appears to be some consensus to announce these changes simultaneously.

It's quite another for the NHS to do anything about it. They have been told to do all sorts of things, that they haven't done, in fact, quite the reverse.

So the next thing should be an announcement of sanctions if it's not carried out.
