'Every morning I wake up and take 5mg of estradiol valerate, and every night before I go to bed, I take 200mg of progesterone. As a result, more of my body is female than male,'

Chris Northwood (she/her) is a councillor in Manchester, deputy group leader of the Manchester Liberal Democrats and member of Federal Council.

Debunking the “gender critical” myth

“Sex is binary and immutable” is the great myth that underpins “gender critical” ideology. At first glance, it might appear to be plausible, but anything beyond a cursory inspection shows it to be shallow and incorrect. Biology is a complex system, and...

And they want us to vote for them?! I had a man come canvassing for the local council, I asked him the woman question, he did not like that and walked off. He did not get elected

Cancelledcurio · 02/10/2023 07:03

@RedToothBrush do you mind? why is them spouting utter garbage evidence of them being autistic?
Less of the ableist shite please. I am gender critical. I am ASD. I am shite with computers.

I’m autistic, the actually diagnosed by the NHS kind.

I believe that a lot of these completely illogical middle-aged wankers just ‘identify’ as autistic.

It’s just another identity cloak/shield for them to put on in the morning.

(I’m not saying no one with autism has fallen for this bollocks, the young are especially vulnerable to wanting to fit into a group with strict rules)

TiredOfCleaning · 02/10/2023 07:53

I identify as tired of cleaning. My pronouns are tired / shit tired.

DeanElderberry · 02/10/2023 07:56

o ffs one of the comments claims that Gender critical people argue “you can’t change biological gender”

No. We say there is no such thing as 'biological gender', because gender is an imaginary construct, not biological but mental. The biological thing is sex, which is entirely different and real and tactile. And not changed by surgery or hormone-altering drugs or both.

It's like someone who has taken LSD insisting they can fly.

Brains are weird, sometimes they go wrong, and maiming and poisoning the bodies they live in isn't a good fix.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 02/10/2023 07:57

I'm feeling grape this morning.

I want to vote for them! It's horrible watching this party become moribund. I previously rated the Libdems' centrist politics.

The Liberals have always been the most consistently intolerant UK political party, and not good for women and children. Cyril Smith and Clement Freud were acceptable to them.

Read Chris's twitter profile. It says autistic.

Plus we know that there is a massive overlap between trans and being autistic. Which really needs explanation / addressing.

Especially given all the autistic charities are full on cheerleaders for genderism and I actually see this as a problem because of the vulnerability it creates.

I fail to see how this is ablest.

An inability to put yourself in the shoes of women and be empathetic to the impact of gender identity on women really is an issue if you are an activist first and gain elected status as a councillor second. It's relevant to how this is contributing to the representation within the LDs.

The LDs are incredibly clichy because of the nature of their structure. Natalie Bird was heavily involved with what was happening in Manchester and was pushed out by one. I know of a number of the individuals in that were heavily involved with autism charities or identified as autistic.

Why is there such an over representation going on within the party? Is it problematic? Does this mean there is a lack of breadth within the party on thinking? Is rigid thinking without challenge damaging?

I mentioned it, because it's relevant. And we should be noticing it. Especially given the implications to young people.

Yes me too! In my area, it's a two-horse race between Conservatives and Lib Dems. I can't vote Labour anyway even if we had a viable candidate, because I'd be a turkey voting for Christmas with DH's job as a private school teacher. I was rather hoping the Lib Dems had become less batshit in the last 20 years since we were in an area with any (in Luton they used to push racist anti-Traveller rhetoric as did the Labour party before the MP got wrecked by the expenses scandal, and I've never quite got over that given that we had close links with Travellers at the time).

There are two single issues I can't vote for a party because of: Not knowing what a woman is and putting private schools out of business.

I really don't like the Conservatives and want them out but I can't support someone running the country (or dear god a Labour-Lib Dem coalition) who will enact those terrible stances. I don't know what to vote anymore.

popebishop · 02/10/2023 08:24

Haha... tell me you haven't grasped what "gender critical" means in one two-word term Grin Numpties

loislovesstewie · 02/10/2023 08:25

EVERY single time I see this I want to tell them this 'but you are still male according to your DNA. You still have XY chromosomes, what don't you understand about that?'

IWilloBeACervix · 02/10/2023 08:57

Idiots. They can do what they like with their gender, or whatever they want to call it; body modification, costume, inner feeling.

You can’t change sex. We need laws and social conventions to be based on sex.

One of the comments that made me laugh said that if you find out a friend is trans you shouldn’t treat them differently. Exactly, if you declare yourself trans, then nothing has actually changed. You shouldn’t be treated differently. I expect they meant that there’d be someone that passed well enough that you were friends and didn’t realise, which may happen, but unlikely.

cheezncrackers · 02/10/2023 09:06

This batshittery is why I can't vote Lib Dem. Unfortunately, I live in one of the few areas that has a Lib Dem MP. She's actually very good, much better than the previous Con MP who didn't even live here, but I can't vote for a party that thinks men can turn into women by taking some hormones.

ArabellaScott · 02/10/2023 09:11

One wonders where this "more female than male" person falls on spectrums like height, hand size, waist:hip ratio, shoulder width, voice pitch etc etc.

This is a serious possibility. The Lib Dems are no longer putting resources into targeting Labour seats - they're just going after Con ones and I've heard comments from both sides about forming a minority coalition govt if Labour don't win an outright majority at the next election. There is also muttering about how voting Lib Dem is keeping the Cons in govt, so if the two parties agree to go into coalition that gives Lib Dem voters the green light to vote for who they want.

ArabellaScott · 02/10/2023 09:31

I'm in a Lib Dem / Conservative area and am very much looking forward to the door stepping from the Lib Dems

But, what a shame. What an opportunity they had to be the voice of reason and a proper alternative to the 2 main parties who are both showers of shit for different reasons.

Don't worry about closing private schools, Starmer would never do anything so 'lefty'. Can't offer any help on the woman question, though.

By definition when someone declares they are trans they are in fact ASKING to be treated differently.

I always find it the height of nonsense and ignorance when people say you should just treat them the same - because they don't want to be. Its something people who don't have close experience of this say. They either know someone as trans (and not before) or they aren't close or its not an experience they've had at all.

If I was treating them the same, I wouldn't be happy if my male friend then decided to come into the female changing room now would I? The crucial point is I'm being asked NOT to have the feelings I would have if my male friend walked into the female changing room, isn't it?!

This.

Another broadly centrist, politically homeless voter here

All the polls I look at suggest this is the most popular position in the country. Why do none of our political parties reflect it???

Obviously that’s rhetorical though re the Lib-Dems - follow the money…
