Free period products in the men's toilet

My government (not UK) has decided to roll out free period products and they are putting them in the men's toilets as well as the women's. I am absolutely furious. This means that men are welcome in our toilets. I just needed a space to vent where I am not called a bigot, I know there is nothing I can do.

But it's why we have them in the UK. They do not appear in men's lavatories, only women's.

🤪Oh Ffs, it's really not the point but a pp said that putting sanitary bins in the men's could mean the company had to pay extra to maintain them. I pointed out (correctly!) that not all countries use sanitary disposal bins. The OP is not in the UK either. I don't need anyone else to explain why the UK uses sanitary bins. I know. Not all countries use them. Maybe you think they should but frankly I don't care. Hope that clears it up for the pedants.

Blood as waste is considered a biohazard and needs to be disposed of properly. A used tampon is not the same as a paper towel you’ve dried your hands on. Your use of “deadly” undermines the point you hoped to make, as it’s hyperbole.

But as pp have said, plenty of other countries disagree with you and they are disposed of as normal waste. Since we don't seem to hear of any issues with this, your point is rather seriously undermined.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

You seem to suggest that the UK and similar countries needlessly require that used bloodied items are treated as hazardous waste, at significant expense, rather than because of good evidence that these things should be dealt with safely.

There are many places in the world where many things are done differently than they are here, for example it may be standard practice to defecate in the open fields. Just because we don’t hear much, if anything, bad about it, doesn’t mean it’s not unwise.

boromu222 · 18/09/2023 09:44

No, I'm saying I have lived in the UK, where it is done, and lived in countries where it is not. I've even worked in facilities management in the latter.

If there were regular outbreaks of...something (who knows what you are imagining?) I think I would know about it. You could explain to us the dangers of not having sanitary bins, if you'd like?

pickledandpuzzled · 18/09/2023 09:57

Given that some of those countries don't flush used loo paper, so bins are emptied very regularly and toilets often have attendants, it's all a bit different anyway.

I do call myself Grammarnut, true. Not being pedantic, though. Point of thread is men in women's public lavatories. I don't think sanitary products in men's loos are likely to suggest men can use the ladies, but TWs will take any rope.

NPET · 07/09/2024 13:17

No I think I would cautiously agree with this. If you needed one & the Ladies had run out, I could ask a male friend to get me one.
Of course in practice I suspect the men would, especially if drunk, soil the products so it would become irrelevant.

Thelnebriati · 07/09/2024 18:27

Before this, did women used to get free sanitary products?

Lovelysummerdays · 07/09/2024 18:37

Likeafurchin · 16/09/2023 10:19

I think sanitary bins are a UK thing.

I never knew this. Do other countries just have bins and those bags you get in hotels?

Toseland · 07/09/2024 19:27

Is it me or do a lot of recent threads seem to have been started by covert TRAs?

BCBird · 07/09/2024 19:32

I'm.sick of this madness.

BobbyBiscuits · 07/09/2024 19:36

If it's to encourage men to be able to buy the products for women when they can't get to the toilets? Then I guess it's fine. If it's for the tiny minority of people who are transmen and have periods then that in itself is helpful to some people. I don't think it means men are more likely to enter women's spaces?

Jifmicroliquid · 07/09/2024 19:41

I’m confused. Do some trans people wear sanitary towels just because they want to feel like a woman?? Or is this just for show?
I really don’t get it.

Putmeinsummer · 07/09/2024 19:46

I do wonder if women started invading men's spaces, using men's toilets en masse with few mooncup slippages and they'd be up in arms about it.

twohotwaterbottles · 07/09/2024 19:50

The world's gone fucking mad. I'm
a big supporter of inclusion but fgs.

I don't understand. If they are putting them in the mens toilets why would the men need to go in the womens??

It's so people presenting as men who were born female and still menstruate can access period products in their own toilets.

Men presenting as women would still want to/be able to use the women's toilet, for reasons unrelated to menstruation.

Grammarnut · 09/09/2024 10:57

Likeafurchin · 17/09/2023 09:31

True but it doesn't change the fact that many countries don't have them. I work for a large company in Italy and they don't have them. They don't have them in schools here either.

Then they should. Blood is dangerous and can cause all manner of ailments. The UK policy is to prevent disease and other countries would benefit from following it.
