Free period products in the men's toilet

My government (not UK) has decided to roll out free period products and they are putting them in the men's toilets as well as the women's. I am absolutely furious. This means that men are welcome in our toilets. I just needed a space to vent where I am not called a bigot, I know there is nothing I can do.

Sorry to hear that. Have they also put sanitary bins in all of the men's toilets? Because that would incur an ongoing cost.

Likeafurchin · 16/09/2023 10:19

I think sanitary bins are a UK thing.

CantThinkOfANameAtAll · 16/09/2023 10:19

I don't understand. If they are putting them in the mens toilets why would the men need to go in the womens??

missmollygreen · 16/09/2023 10:20

The period products in the mens are presumably for trans men (women to men) The ones in the womens toilets are for women. Im cuious as to why you feel this means that men are welcome in the womens toilets?

Isn't it obvious? They are saying both sexes can use each toilet.

Holeinamole · 16/09/2023 10:27

Yes, that’s the point of the exercise, making a statement that toilets are now mixed-sex. It has f all to do with period poverty.

If you feel you can say what country this is, OP, please do.

No, they are saying, 'here are some free sanitary products for trans men to use'.

It takes some mental gymnastics to see that as a bad thing.

Zodfa · 16/09/2023 10:42

This already happens in some places. They are for "trans men". I am not convinced many trans men are actually keen on going in the men's toilets, but it's a nice bit of virtue signalling. And probably not ultimately that expensive, as the tampons basically don't get taken so they last for ages.

I think the general wish of terfs like me is for a third space for those not wishing to own their biological sex.
The idea of a sanitary bin as a Trojan horse is unpleasant in so many ways.

bingbongbang23 · 16/09/2023 10:52

@quantumbutterfly , what does it mean to be a terf? Never heard this before

quantumbutterfly · 16/09/2023 10:55

I am a biological realist. Terf is a perjorative for people like me.

Erm. What do you think non-UK toilet users do with discarded product? Put it on top of the toilet? Bins are a functional requirement.

If trans men are using the mens toilets, then trans women are using the women's toilets. Why is that a good thing, in your opinion?

fruitnutz · 16/09/2023 11:20

Where are you from?

Prometheus · 16/09/2023 11:21

They just put it in a normal bin - no need to pay companies hundreds of pounds to provide special bins for sanitary products like they are some kind of deadly biohazard.

Ollifer · 16/09/2023 11:22

It's just getting ridiculous. Are we going to have Viagra machines installed in the women's toilets next??

Bins yes but not sanitary bins that are collected by a specialist company. That's more of a UK thing ime.

So basically exactly what I said. They are saying that the toilets are mixed sex.

No not all just in some of the toilets in the main areas. What I am most annoyed about is most of the women's public toilets don't have them in, I feel they should be supplied first at the very least!

Where have you been that uses normal bins? Genuinely curious. Sanitary bins are definitely a thing here in Australia.

I felt it may be a bit outing but I am past caring now to be honest, I am in Jersey Channel Islands. We don't have a UK government but we often follow the UK policies etc. The tampons have been provided in the toilets in the main town but not in all of the female toilets outside of the town!

Definitely virtue signaling. Fits in nicely with the Pride event over here today!

Because if they are welcoming transmen into the men's toilets that means that transwomen are welcome into the women's toilets. If they are doing that there is no point in offering single sex facilities at all is there? Just make it a free for all for however you are identifying that day.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 16/09/2023 18:52

DH came out of the loo at our local (London) theatre the other day looking very puzzled about the basket of tampons by the urinals. It's a bit of a stretch to see it as anything other than virtue signalling. Not sure I'd fancy using a tampon that had been hanging around in the gents, even if I did happen to be the unicorn transman caught out by my period on a night out in a west London theatre.

Likeafurchin · 16/09/2023 19:04

@Holeinamole I have never seen them in Italy.
