'Joe Biden's transgender health secretary has praised an Alaska gender-affirming care clinic which wants the word 'mother' replaced with the phrase 'egg producer.' '

This is the website of the clinic:

https://www.identityalaska.org/

'While there are no surgeries being done on children below the age of 13, there are puberty blockers given to children prior to the time they reach puberty.
[Levine] also revealed that she is glad she waited so long to transition because it allowed her to have a family.
'I have no regrets because if I had transitioned when I was younger then I wouldn't have my children. I can't imagine a life without my children,' Levine said during a 2019 speech about gender care.''

I wonder how Dr Levine's egg-producer feels about all this.

It doesn't even make sense. Not all "egg producers" are mothers.

This would all be so much less gut-churning if so many people weren't lapping it up.

And not all mothers are egg-producers.

They are all women, though.

JacquelinePot · 26/08/2023 17:07

Men who say they are women are women, you bigots

Also

We will henceforth call women "egg producers".

It's just so completely deranging! By their own logic (such as it is), men who say they are women should be called sperm producers, no?

JacquelinePot · 26/08/2023 17:08

Except obviously not, because all this fuckery with language is supposed to create a new binary where men who say they are women are lumped in with women, and women who say they are men are lumped in with men.

When will the madness end?!

Boiledbeetle · 26/08/2023 17:30

Helleofabore · 26/08/2023 15:23

If we have stopped egg production are we then called ‘boilers’?

😁 works for me!

Crouton19 · 26/08/2023 17:32

Cluck cluck! 🐣

FroodwithaKaren · 26/08/2023 18:00

And from the multiple previous experiences of all this bull, about two seconds after 'egg producer' becomes the fig leaf for 'real woman', some twit with a penis will announce that they too are egg producers. And demand to show their egg producing kit on radio.

I'm still chuckling over that one with the cervix business in between singing 'a little bit of Monica in the fridge, a little bit of Alison under the bridge...'

Aren’t we born with all the eggs we’ll ever have?

Maybe we ought to be referred to as egg ripeners? 🤔

Men produce sperm on a 6 weekly cycle so they could be referred to sperm producers.

I wonder what the rationale is for calling them XY individuals but not calling women XX individuals.

I think I will stick with woman to be honest.

That was my thought too. As a childless woman, my mother technically produced all the eggs I have/had (probably got about 2 left by this point). So I was a temporary egg-harbourer.

FroodwithaKaren · 26/08/2023 18:12

There is also the absolute miracle that my mother carried her eggs while being carried as a fetus by her mother. My grandmother at one point held two generations of eggs inside her. As powerful as the mitochondrial DNA that descends through the female line.

Female biology is amazing. It's not something to teach women to shamefully hide in case some twit is busy being offended by it.

What about to those who have ceased egg production? No longer ‘mothers’ to their children?

Time it right, have children fairly late and you can hit menopause and cease to mother just in time for the worst teen years!

I might just be in the thick of it now...please God don't let it get worse.

namitynamechange · 26/08/2023 23:10

I have a son but no daughter. Given my own mother produced the eggs used to make him (and all the other eggs) while she was pregnant with me I technically haven't produced any eggs myself. Levine doesn't seem like a great medical expert.

RocketPanda · 26/08/2023 23:20

Does that mean we get henopause?

ChokkaQuokka · 27/08/2023 07:46

I thought every girl was born with all the eggs we will have. It’s just that they don’t all mature and journey down the fallopian tubes at the same time. So we aren’t egg producers once we are born.

(and it’s one of the reasons why grandchildren can be affected by what happened to their grandmother when she was pregnant with their mother).

FWIW this was the first hit on Google when I was looking for a citation. Massive eye roll emoji.

FYI: Gender
Sex and gender exist on a spectrum. For this article, we use the terms “female” and “women” to refer to people with ovaries.

And yes, I rated it unhelpful.

If you're looking to get pregnant, you may wonder how many eggs you have at various points in life. The short answer: It goes from millions to none.

Thank you! I don't often laugh out loud before 8.30am on a Sunday, especially when reading the S&G board but today I did.

Teapot13 · 27/08/2023 12:22

I’m actually shocked that this person admitted that if he had transitioned pre-puberty he would have been infertile. The true believers usually don’t admit that when they talk about kids.

BabyStopCryin · 27/08/2023 16:27

Call is what you like, give it a week and folks will be demanding that word too.

nepeta · 27/08/2023 19:09

Some publisher might republish old books with more inclusive language. For instance:

A Vindication of the Rights of Egg Producer, by Mary Wollstonecraft.

And when a child asks a parent where babies come from the parent might answer:

"When a man loves an egg producer very much.."

Though to be fair, the initial site from which that information was taken recommended replacing men and women or male and female by egg and sperm producers. But elsewhere it does focus on the urgent need to erase 'mother' from scientific vocabulary, and to replace "when a woman gives birth to an infant" with "when the infant exits the womb."

Or something close to that. I noticed it, because the active role of the woman giving birth is also erased there, the way it was in some medical text books decades ago.

thatsn0tmyname · 27/08/2023 19:18

If Levine is so keen to use biological language, then we should use the term secondary oocyte producers. Which would make me a menopausal ex secondary oocyte producer. Or woman, for short.

PomegranateOfPersephone · 27/08/2023 19:59

May the trans open.

FannyCann · 27/08/2023 21:20

when the infant exits the womb

This makes it sound as if the infant is making its own choice to head for the exit. Hope it shuts the door behind it.

It's particularly confusing for anyone who can't say their Rs. I couldn't say my Rs as a child, my sister used to love to taunt me by getting me to say "wound the wugged wock the wagged wobin gwows". And I still occasionally regress. So I did read that as "the infant exits the room".
