Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

One night (in the UK) when I was pregnant enough that it was obvious to anyone, I was working on my computer with headphones on, thought I heard something & turned around.

There was a strange man standing in the doorway of my study who had kicked my door in.

I freaked out, grabbed a sculpture that sat on my desk in one hand, the phone in the other, dialled 999 & threw the sculpture at him.

He grabbed my phone & ran off.

It turned out he'd broken in convinced his girlfriend was in the house cheating as she'd parked her car directly outside my house, freaked out when he realised he'd made a mistake & ran away panicking.

The police gave me a massive lecture that he could have pressed charges if I'd hurt him when I threw the sculpture and how I should not have been so aggressive because it would be assault.

They let him go without any charges telling me it would be unfair to give him a criminal record (they seemed to think his belief his girlfriend was cheating was justification enough for what he did) & I had to pay to get my own front door fixed.
I still have the sculpture (had to get part of it glued back on as it chipped when it landed on the floor).

I'd throw it again.

That's not even my worst personal experience of how little the Police give a fuck about female victims.

Good woman. We should all be more like her.

When I did some self defence in the UK, we were told that you never tell the police or the court about your training if you need to use it. You're just stronger than you look and you got lucky that you managed to knock the bastard out. This was the police telling us that.

OK, maybe don't say lucky either.

WickedSerious · 22/08/2023 17:27

I'd give her a medal.

Well done!

That is horrific that the police lectured you and that they went for such leniency. Obviously, pregnant women are not high on the list of people who should be protected from your story. While I disagree with people taking action such as shooting a gun at someone or knowingly taking action that will result in death, there seems to be a lack of symmetry in some cases.

So if your aim had been better you'd have been in actual trouble whilst the man who broke down the door stole your phone and scared the shit out of a pregnant women in her own home got off with a telling off!

Fuck me!

The police were talking absolute rubbish. If you had hurt the man and they had been stupid enough to charge you, I suspect the CPS would have dropped it. This is fairly and squarely within the limits of reasonable defence.

God almighty. Police tell a pregnant woman she could be convicted of assault for throwing an object at a threatening intruder.

Of course you should wait politely to see if he is going to physically assault you. You may miscarry, you may be raped, disabled or killed. But at least you won’t get a criminal record.

God almighty.

The judge said she “exceeded the necessity for self defence” - WTAF??

Well done the woman in the article. I hope a crowdfunder raised those €82 and more.

Just noticed this at the bottom of the article. I could not bear to click on the link:

This comes just days after protests against femicide erupted in yet another Balkan nation, Bosnia, after a bodybuilder livestreamed his ex-wife’s executionto 12,000 on Instagram.

Bodybuilder livestreams ex-wife’s execution on Instagram

At least 12,000 people watched her murder, with some leaving supportive comments for her killer.
