This will be interesting, I don’t think they have a leg to stand on.

Jason Grant, a former personal trainer, was hired as period dignity officer for the Tayside region in August last year. The post was meant to involve discussing sanitary products in schools and colleges with students.

However the £35,000-a-year role was abolished weeks later after claims that “threats and abuse” had been levelled towards individuals involved in the project.

Male period poverty tsar cleared to take action against four public bodies

A man who lost his job as Scotland’s first “period poverty tsar” after a global backlash has won his bid to take legal action against the public bodies who hire

Apparently he turned down interviews. I wonder if, now that it's over, he would find it hard to justify why he wanted the role, and struggle with being asked why he'd want a man in that position instead of a woman.

Times have changed a little and the tides have slightly turned since he got the job. In fact, the whole story probably brought a lot of interest to the issue.

Gonnawashmymouthout · 24/10/2023 19:23

It’s all a bit strange. When he got this job and there was all the stuff in the press about it, I was baffled. As I was certain there was already a “period champion” or some similar job title, working at the college.

WeighDownOnMeStayTillMorning · 24/10/2023 19:28

I might be misremembering but wasn't there a woman who had been doing that job or similar on a temp basis and who said the guy just started coming to the office for meetings and stuff with the woman who then pretty much handed him the job?

Yes!!! This! I wasn’t sure if public knowledge (I heard it on the grapevine)

WeighDownOnMeStayTillMorning · 24/10/2023 20:01

I read it somewhere, I don't know any of the people involved directly.

She had been the person who set it all up and was doing the job for half the pay and was told it would be her job then he got hired without her even being told that they had decided to put it "out to tender " let alone advertised it. She is sueing them over it so we might get some answers yet

WeighDownOnMeStayTillMorning · 24/10/2023 21:03

Oh god @Hoardasurass is that what happened?

What an absolute farce. The details on this really should be heard in public.

Hoardasurass · 24/10/2023 21:15

@WeighDownOnMeStayTillMorning that's the gossip coming from the college and that there was allegedly a intimate relationship between 1 of the recruiters and the guy who got the job.
It's a completely fucked up mess that should have certain people fired, but she still has a job for now

MavisMcMinty · 24/10/2023 21:20

I just don’t understand why any man would think “That’s the job for me!” in this case, nor why anyone would think it was a suitable job to even interview - never mind give the job to - a man. This should never have happened in the first place, it defies all logic!

I think there's got to be something in that rumour; what other good reason could there be for making such an odd decision in such an underhanded way?

SinnerBoy · 24/10/2023 21:42

Hoardasurass Today 21:01

I'm not sure that that one will go to court, can you imagine what could be exposed to the light? All those FOI requests, which were denied, wouldn't be able to be kept hidden.

She'd be entitled to full disclosure on how it was advertised, how many were interviewed and the sex breakdown of the candidates.

Hoardasurass · 24/10/2023 21:54

@SinnerBoy I expect that you're correct though I really do hope it all comes out.
I keep thinking about all that woman's hard work and a project that could have done so much good for girls all destroyed by 1 allegedly corrupt woman and a guy with no shame

SinnerBoy · 24/10/2023 21:59

Well, quite. I'd love for it to come out, in all its grubby "glory."

FannyCann · 24/10/2023 22:07

Ooh I'm glad she's suing and hope it goes to court.

I think there was something in the courier with her talking about the job she had been doing as per @Hoardasurass

There was a lot in twitter too.

It's pretty outrageous if not can all be swept under the carpet with a pay off to Jason.

ilovemyspace · 24/10/2023 22:16

Would a man consider it odd if a woman applied for - and won - the job as 'prostrate cancer champion' ?
Would a man wonder why a woman was more qualified than a man to speak and advise on prostrate cancer?

Would a man feel more comfortable speaking to a woman about prostrate cancer symptoms?
just wondering ..........

FannyCann · 24/10/2023 22:17

More about it from the Courier here.

www.thecourier.co.uk/fp/news/dundee/4791680/period-dignity-jason-grant-settlement/

"And we can reveal Mr Grant rejected several big-money offers to do tell-all interviews with US and UK chat shows about his ordeal before a settlement was reached with the Period Dignity Working Group."

Let's hope his settlement is "big money" or he might have been better off doing the tell all interviews and chat shows. Guess he's all wrapped up in a NDA now.

FannyCann · 24/10/2023 22:26

And a handy round up here, but no mention of the woman who had complained about being left out of the running.
But apparently that was the FOURTH time he had been employed by a particular person.

I wonder who the Mum and teenage daughter in the publicity shots were.

Also - what is that weird thing that pops up in the adverts? 🤔

Many specialists prostate cancer nurses are women. A relative has a female oncologist treating his prostate cancer. Most of the radiology team are female.

ilovemyspace · 24/10/2023 23:53

@GasDrivenNun can you see that there is a difference between a trained doctor, trained nurses and a self proclaimed 'champion'?

FrancescaContini · 25/10/2023 09:44

GailBlancheViola · 15/08/2023 19:46

I feel the same in fact I feel rather suspicious of why a man would want to or think he is uniquely qualified to talk to young girls about periods.

I agree with you. Every single teenage girl on earth will be squirming and hating every second of an interaction with an unknown man talking to her about her period, especially if he tries to claim he knows more about periods than she does.

The man is a weirdo to want this job.

Chersfrozenface · 25/10/2023 09:53

"The man is a weirdo to want this job."

There are various reasons for taking a job. Being told nudge, nudge, wink, wink that you'll get a job, having no intention of doing much work knowing you'll be protected from criticism and just banking the pay cheques, Those would be good reasons.

I've seen it happen. Many others will have too.

WeighDownOnMeStayTillMorning · 25/10/2023 10:32

I don't think he's a weirdo to take a well-paid job that was handed to him on a plate.

I mean, it's unusual I think, that a man would want the role (my husband would rather set himself alight than spend all day talking about periods) but when a former colleague/friend/whatever the relationship was comes knocking with a job you don't even have to apply for...hard to not even consider it.

StrictlyPrue · 25/10/2023 11:15

Given the College seemed to want to take full responsibility for it at the tribunal reflects their sense of nervousness around it how he came to be in line for the job, possible the other organisations on the panel were misled during the process by the college insistence to "take the lead". I have worked on similar partnerships and ordinarily you would trust your partners to be "following the rules", seems not in this case.

He’s a weirdo to take a job that involves talking to women and girls about periods.
