When the Lionesses win

Am I the only woman of a certain age to get very emotional when the Lionesses win? I wasn’t allowed to play football at primary school (the boys played football, the girls netball).

I then went to an all girls school - when again football was not played.

I always wanted to play.

And I look at our national team, and am so proud that finally #ThisGirlCan.

Me too. But to be honest I get quite emotional when England win matches in men's football too. Maybe a bit more with the women's. Despite being crap at football myself.
A couple of years back when the lionesses won against Germany I was flying so couldn't watch the match but the man sitting next to my son and I was watching the beginning on his phone and shared it. And then the pilot announced when we landed that England had won and everyone cheered. I love that side of football.

Oh yes me too! No girls football when I was at (mixed) school, unfortunately. Love watching the Lionesses!

This post on instagram gave me the chills earlier...

And I know that's not specific to the Lionesses but still... can you imagine 5/10/30 years ago, packed stadiums having this energy and such crowds being there to watch 'just a bunch of girls having a little go'?!

If you're interested, there's a thread following the Women's World Cup in the Sport section. People watch along and comment. It's fun.

I was on a train a couple of weeks' ago and a mixed group of teenagers got on. One of them said 'do you know what's happened in the football today?' and they all talked about teams and scores and who was playing well and what players they really rated etc.

I credit the lionesses for that - talking about football like it's football. The fact that all the players were women didn't make a jot of difference to the boys. But how brilliant for the girls. I love the our girls are growing up seeing these brilliant and talented women being celebrated for being brilliant and talented.

puffyisgood · 12/08/2023 22:41

They're a gutsy bunch. Outplayed arguably today, certainly against Nigeria (after the red especially) but still keep winning, the non-European kick off times are a bit of a shame but as far as is possible given that constraint I reckon the next game(s) can expect a really huge TV audience.

burnoutbabe · 12/08/2023 22:51

I also imagine if they don't win, there won't be a sudden increase in domestic violence across the uk? Like happens when the men's team plays sadly.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 12/08/2023 22:55

I'm the same but I'm worse with the England netball team, the Roses. I think it's because I was a netballer for nearly 40 years. I've always been a footy fan as well and love watching the Lionesses.

DowntonCrabby · 12/08/2023 22:55

This sounds awful but as a Scot, when England men’s team are in a tournament I get partially sucked into the Scottish mentality of “anyone but England” I like to see them doing well in the initial stages and would watch the games but would be generally a bit “meh/don’t care.”

I bloody LOVE the lionesses, follow a load of them and the team on SM and would be delighted to see them take the tournament. I’ve enjoyed watching lots of the games- not just England, I’ve watched all of Ireland’s and Australia’s too, just having family so feeling in those countries so feel a mild connection.

Women’s football in general is so much more visible nowadays, I’m so glad the girls on my DS’s team have these role models to look up to, and that girls/young women, even if they aren’t particularly into football have these women out there just being women and being awesome. 🦁🦁🦁

Helleofabore · 12/08/2023 22:59

No. I cried some tears when the Matildas won today. I am going to be very torn on Wednesday!

Hepwo · 12/08/2023 22:59

My eldest DS posted a picture on Instagram of a match he was at and it was the Lionesses. I was proud of him.

smilesup · 12/08/2023 23:02

I love the lionesses. I sobbed today partly for the team and all the work it will have taken but also for the Columbians. I think what they will have been through to get where they are. Great game as well.

ChateauMargaux · 12/08/2023 23:03

We have loved watching this.. and marvelling at how wonderful they are.

10 years ago, my then 6 year old was persistent in pushing me to find her a girls football team to play in. (She was a MUCH better hockey player!!)

She, I and a few other motivated girls and their Mums, pushed her school to give equal space and coaching to the girls and also pushed for a girls only team.

It has been a joy to watch the progress of football locally, nationally and internationally.

The Lionesses are amazing!! Fabulous role models and a joy to watch.

Blinkingbonkers · 12/08/2023 23:12

I didn’t get to watch today, but listened on the radio. What has really floored me is when later I casually mentioned to dh (sporty and considerably accomplished) that i’d listened in he responded with (ish) ‘blimey, you should have watched - they’re really brilliant, their game play exceptional…it’s really great to see the strategy they employ, can’t wait for the next game’. He’s more engaged with this than any previous tournament, mens’ or womens’. 🎉🎉🎉

Am on there. It’s good. Join us

I was never allowed to play football at school either, although I went to watch our local (men’s) team every weekend, home and away. Me and my friends wrote “football” every term on the slip of paper we were given to make our choice, and the PE teacher just laughed at us and allocated us tennis, netball or badminton.

It’s wonderful to see how things are changing.

@littlbrowndog 👋

Truly inspirational to watch. DD (8) didn't understand why I cried last year when we won the Euros. She's too young to fully understand the lack of equality in sport.

If we make it to the finals next Sunday the strongest message the FA could send would be asking all team sport to be delayed/postponed for the women's final. They sure as hell would for the men's.

That would be another huge turning point.

countrygirl99 · 13/08/2023 06:54

As a teen I joined a women's football team in 1972. In those days women's football wasn't even recognised by the FA, we had our own association. We had to wear men's kit. We've come a long, long way.

LittleMissDarkness · 13/08/2023 07:30

I just hope if the lionesses win this tournament that ALL players get given honours. Not just a handful like when they won the Euros. That would never have happened if the mens football team won and I'm still furious about it now.

Love what these women have achieved.

Awumminnscotland · 13/08/2023 07:58

Watching England Womens team has been brilliant and great to show my daughter.
It looks like there's a brilliant grassroots grounding of girls teams in England which is not happening here in Scotland yet, which is very frustrating. It may be different in other parts of Scotland but in our area the very mention of a girls team for primary girls is met with either ' but all the teams are mixed now, there's no problem with girls playing' or you're directed to a 'pathway' for a professional club. I would love to see the need for girls only teams recognised here.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 13/08/2023 08:23

I love the Lionesses & have been with my DD's to watch a few matches, we're also regulars at Arsenal ladies matches & DD2 plays football with the girls club at the Emirates.

One of the things I've most enjoyed about this tournament is the way the lionesses congratulate & console the opposing team after the match.

I follow Lotte Wubbon-Moy (Arsenal player & Lioness) on instagram as she started an Arsenal incentive to get girls involved in football as well as talking about mental health & just basically encouraging girls to follow their passions. DD1 was involved in the trial group and it was amazing for her. She has ASC & it was a huge confidence builder & Lotte spent a lot of time with the group, turning up to loads of the sessions.

I marvel at all the women's sport on tv now, on the main channels too.
Growing up it was really only Wimbledon and the Olympics when women's sport got much coverage.
