Sounds like it went from Twitter well sold out and Joanne spoke very well.
Thread from journalist Gina Davidson here:
At Joanna Cherry's Fringe event and interviewer Graham Spiers starts by saying he is pleased the event is going ahead and believes in listening to all views - Cherry (who gets an ovation when she appears) says she's delighted the pride flag is on show given she's a lesbian
she talks of the climate and culture when she came out and how she feels she's battling homophobia again because of what she sees as an undermining of the right to be same sex attracted.
is discussing how fellow snp mps tried to have the whip removed when she wanted to speak at a conference about lesbian rights. "I found that really shocking"
Spiers asking about her legal career - her prosecution of sexual offences and campaigning for human rights.
says it was her work in the former area that showed her that men who want to abuse women and children will use anything they can to do so - says that was obvious with the Isla Bryson case. She says she objects to self-ID on that basis.
Spiers reflects that spearheading the rights of women is deeply embedded in her world view - she agrees.
She talks about starting a women only group for young lawyers/students at university, says some firms at that time refused to employ women
Spiers asked her if she felt at physical risk during this debate - he calls it cerebral (the other say with Mhairi Black he called it intellectual) - she says it's not that complicated but admits writing legislation around these issues can be.
She says GRR Bill for example didnt just give rights to trans people but to anyone who wants to selfID - she claims what happened at Holyrood meant there wasn't proper scrutiny of how the Bill would impact on others' rights
says if politicians cant debate nuance or have an intellectual debate "they're in the wrong job". she says too many politicians just wanted to avoid the debate
Spiers asking if the phrase "women don't have penises" is crude and throws petrol on the flames. Cherry says no "it's a biological fact" - huge cheer
now discussing the meaning of lesbian - references the Alison Bailey case "people should be free to date who they want without being called bigots"
Spiers now asking about the "intolerance" in the debate "and a rush to call people Nazis - what's going on?"
Cherry talking about the rape and death threats she has had - says no support from within her party "it seemed to be ok because they say I'm a transphobe". Says threats of violence is from one side of debate
Though it seems like the bigots in the staff rigged a stunt they projected the words Protect Trans Kids on the stage afterwards.
At least they didn't attack anyone this time like in Aberdeen.
Maybe we need to project 'stop male violence' after every TRA event.
