Could Elon Musk help feminists?

Specifically, he is offering to fund the legal fees of people who have lost work due to reports of things they've liked or tweeted.

Already the Australian councillor who was suspended for saying Transwomen are male and James Esses have asked for help.

'If you were unfairly treated by your employer due to posting or liking something on this platform, we will fund your legal bill.

No limit.

Please let us know.'

I like him.
He’s no feminist and in gaming terms he’s “chaotic good”, but he’s a force that will get behind certain causes that align with feminism.

There must be a lot people who this would apply to.
I guess you would have to have plenty of firm evidence, documents, statements and so on.

I'm intrigued. Can you explain?

Wow!!!!

There are already cases set up and running with fundraising drives that need help.

Will it encourage women to sue their employers if they know they can access legal help?

I'd be a bit cautious about trusting Musk to stick to his word, but its an interesting thought how this might change the landscape.

I imagine that US lawsuits will be the primary focus but the effects will be felt world wide as it (hopefully) impacts on US multinationals and corporate culture. If there are lawsuits on this and corporations realise there is pushback attitudes will change. Downstream we will all benefit.

What an interesting and no doubt, useful offer! I’m glad James Esses has thrown his hat in the ring. Perhaps LGBA will be able to tap him up if anyone else comes for them in future.

There must be numerous women who would benefit from this, is Jess De Wahls completely sorted now? How about Sonya Douglas?

I wish Elon would help Null over at the farms - they are both free speech advocates and concerned about how trans ideology harms society, plus if anyone has the address book to get Josh the services the farms need to stay up, it’s Elon.

RebelliousCow · 06/08/2023 09:40

Does he also mean prior to him buying twitter?

Have any there been any TRA activists who have suffered any consequences for liking or posting offensive or threatening comment? Not many, if any?

TheClogLady · 06/08/2023 09:41

Would hopefully only take a few high profile cases before businesses/ orgs/educational establishments realise that sacking someone for tweets is an open invitation to endless litigation and the whole
phenomenon is over.

Wouldn’t even need to win really, just cost a lot of and be a pain in the arse.

I am with you on this one. I think he is certainly doing it for the free speech aspect. However, whatever his reason, if it gets some court cases through about this type of action, then it will certainly make people take note of discriminating against women for standing up for their boundaries.

Signalbox · 06/08/2023 10:20

God please let him follow through on this at least once for a case in the UK.

Rainbowshit · 06/08/2023 10:32

Wow. A few high profile lawsuits would definitely be a game changer.

SerendipityJane · 06/08/2023 10:39

Harry Cole v. Humberside fascist bastards might have taken a very different turn.

I think that Elon could be incredibly helpful, right up to the moment he loses interest. At which point he'll renege on any financial promises, and try to tear you down if you dared to say anything about it.

He's not a good man, he's a capricious billionaire whos only interest is furthering the cause of Elon Musk

Chaotic good is the philosophy that goodness is best achieved through the freedom of individuals to act independently.

Pretty self-explanatory term and I really like it!

Good/bad.......... He's a human being like any other - but one who has more influence than most. Even if he just uses that influence for a brief period and it is helpful to the cause then I think most of us would settle for that.

The post is not about him being inherently good. Is anyone?

It's about whether his actions can help feminism.

Your analysis is spot on though. I guess it would be put down to ADHD which would then absolve him of wrongdoing as it's just 'his ADHD brain'

Fair enough, but I just feel like anyone who ends up in Musk's orbit is likely to find themselves getting flung into the sun.

I always remember that diver who ended up having to fight off peadophile allegations because he dared to suggest that Musk wasn't being entirely helpful with his submarine idea.

BellsMoon · 06/08/2023 11:13

Not a good man?

He's bloody influential is what he is. A case funded by him would have the highest media profile.

He cares deeply about free speech so some of the cases he chooses to fund may not be palatable to you or me, but if he chooses one gender critical case in the UK, I really think it would be a game changer.

ThatsMsAtomicBob · 06/08/2023 11:19

He doesn't care about free speech. He only cares about his free speech, and that's a crucial difference.

Considering former employees are having to take the company to court to get the severance packages they were promised, that the company is not paying bills they are contracted to and that he is such an attention vampire, I wouldn't count on him for anything. He will use the attention you are giving him him as long as it suits him - probably not very long - and then move on to the next thing.
