Could Elon Musk help feminists?

Specifically, he is offering to fund the legal fees of people who have lost work due to reports of things they've liked or tweeted.

Already the Australian councillor who was suspended for saying Transwomen are male and James Esses have asked for help.

He doesn't care about free speech. He only cares about his free speech, and that's a crucial difference.

Considering former employees are having to take the company to court to get the severance packages they were promised, that the company is not paying bills they are contracted to and that he is such an attention vampire, I wouldn't count on him for anything. He will use the attention you are giving him him as long as it suits him - probably not very long - and then move on to the next thing.

He has free speech though, when you're rich with a lot of influence it doesn't affect you as much as the people he is targeting with this who have lost their jobs through liking posts on social media (which are probably biologically correct and not offensive). He could say what he wanted without extending any sort of offer to support others or platform others who want to be able to do the same without inappropriate consequences. Does someone have to be perfect and never problematic for help to be considered worthwhile? Are any billionaries without issue- are they all 100% decent people? If not then where is the money which is often a lifeline for people in cases like this going to come from? Someone can be problematic but also do good things, even if it is for show which personally I don't see why he would bother, does it matter to those who benefit?

The law suit from 6 twitter employees doesn't look that scandalous really either.

This is really great

We need a single sex equivalent to get the law moving to not be anti women

It would be great if he opened up a sort of sub Twitter, only accessible to women.

I would prefer him to buy Wikipedia.

I take it he’ll still have to approve which cases get funding. Ie the nspcc fetish bloke, and the girl guide gun-toting leather clad transwoman

Well yes, it reads that he wants to help people who have lost their jobs for simply liking a tweet that goes against certain agendas but isn't offensive rather than anyone who has lost their jobs by acting or posting inappropriately. He even sends send them through, he isn't firing out blank cheques.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/08/2023 09:56

The wording is ‘If you were unfairly treated by your employer due to posting or liking something on this platform, we will fund your legal bill.’

There’s lots of subjectivity in ‘unfairly’. There’s also plenty of scope for someone getting his support after being sacked for posting say misogynist or racist things.
But you know, all he is doing is giving access to lawyers. It’s still the court’s decision. In a world where people may be treated illegally but not have deep enough pockets to get access to the law this seems a wholly positive act.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/08/2023 09:59

To some extent it’s probably an arms race against other platforms. Use Twitter rather than a different one because the other won’t help if you’re sacked for speaking or liking things, so you can be more relaxed and speak more freely on Twitter.
It could backfire if Twitter becomes the go to place for anger and abuse while people play more nicely elsewhere, but it need not pan out that way.

Anti vaxxers and Andrew Tate misogynists are also asking for help so I'm not sure it would be good for feminists to align themselves with him.

Why is it about ‘alignment’? Musk is not a feminist. Look at his use of surrogates.
But what he is proposing could be helpful to feminists.
And I don’t know about you but I still want anti vaxxers and Andrew Tate misogynists to be treated fairly by their employers and have equal access to the law.

Comefromaway · 07/08/2023 10:30

The anti vaxxer asking for help was a DR who had allegedly brought his hospital into disrepute by tweeting lots of inaccurate information in his capacity as a Dr at said hospital.

Well said.
It's worth contacting him. If there are issues with him or strings attached, you can walk away.

No doubt, and he deserves to be able to pay for a lawyer. If his case is rubbish which it might well be, he will lose.
