This story made me so sad, the life this girl had was already traumatic.

This happened a few miles from me & I know the area well as my dad was brought up there. Amber had a tragic life with a horrific ending. RIP Amber 💐

PatatiPatatras · 26/07/2023 18:47

I did wonder about starting a thread about her. Thank you for being me courageous than me op.
What a tragedy...
😢

JeannieDark · 26/07/2023 19:11

It seems to tiny to put something on here but I wanted to say something even though it makes no difference. I don't think a story of a murder in the news has ever affected me as much as this one. And they're all terrible and sad.

I think her young age & the fact it was her brother and also the further assaults on her body after death just make it seem so much worse than other murders 😢😢

ArabeIIaScott · 27/07/2023 15:53

Poor, poor child.

Father of teenager who murdered and sexually assaulted his sister is convicted rapist

Peter Gibson raped a woman in East Kilbride by tying her up and blindfolding her, before grabbing his victim by the neck and strangling her.

The 62-year-old was convicted of a total of 10 charges earlier this year, with his crimes spanning between June 2001 and February 2008.

They included the indecent assault of a young boy in East Kilbride, as well as further violence to the child by punching and kicking him.

Gibson, formerly of Shropshire, was also found guilty of lewd and libidinous behaviour towards another boy as well as physically assaulting him and threatening the child.

Appearing at the High Court in Glasgow in April, he was jailed for 10 years and was ordered to be supervised for a further three years on his release. Reporting of the case was delayed until the end of his son’s murder trial.

Yes, plus her previous rape and the fact she had been in foster care but was then in a different group home (I think?) just add up to an unbearably tragic life and death.

I'm not naive in any way but it blows my mind how a brother could sexually assault his own biological sister 🤮

BillyBraggisnotmylover · 27/07/2023 19:38

I wonder if the son was the child victim
mentioned in that article, given the allegations are quite historical. Tragic case.

IwantToRetire · 27/07/2023 20:24

From another article (I suppose that more can be said now the court case is over)

In a statement after Gibson was convicted of murder this week, former foster father Craig Niven said: “When they arrived at our home – Amber aged three and Connor aged five – Connor stated: ‘We are safe now’. They were until he took her safety away.”

The couple was granted permanent care of the siblings a few years later, yet concerns were soon raised about the children’s behaviour. Giving evidence during the trial, Mr Niven said he would not leave the two alone together as they were “not a good mix”.

When Amber was just 14 years-old, the foster care arrangement broke down and she moved into Hillhouse children’s unit, while her brother remained with the Nivens until his 18th birthday.

It was while she was being looked after by social services that Amber was raped by Jamie Starrs at his home in Bothwell in June 2021. The 20-year-old was on bail at the time for another sex attack and was found guilty of the assault on Amber earlier this month.

Her brother had remained a constant presence in her life. Despite describing their relationship as turbulent, Amber’s friend told jurors she had been looking forward to seeing him in the hours before she was killed.

At the time, he was a resident at Hamilton’s Blue Triangle project, a hostel for homeless youngsters. After Gibson called the Hillhouse unit to speak to his sister, care home manager Ian Currie attempted to discourage her from leaving but his efforts fell on deaf ears.

I just cant understand why she was sent to a children's home and her brother got to stay with the foster family. They must have known she would be more vulnerable in a situation like that.

But as said up thread, whatever happened in their very early years must have been traumatic and appears to have had a lasting effect. Sad

Raped in care before her brother killed her, even in death Amber couldn’t escape

Amber Gibson suffered at the hands of three men, with her own brother convicted of her murder this week. Holly Evans writes

dimorphism · 27/07/2023 21:18

So tragic. They knew her brother was a risk. She should have been better protected in the inaccurately called "care". Failed by a society that does not punish men soon enough and allows them to escalate

ArabeIIaScott · 08/08/2023 19:41

Christ.

'Amber revealed she had been attacked while in a supported accommodation unit in Blantyre.'

Are they not supervised? How can a vulnerable girl be put in this position, at risk. Fucking hell.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 08/08/2023 19:46

Terrible, terrible. That poor child.

iyzzz · 08/08/2023 19:49

Poor, poor Amber. It's just the most tragic story. Abused and mistreated her entire life and even after her death.

Like you @JeannieDark I don't really know what to say but I'm glad this post exists.

It was very moving to read her foster family talk about how loving and positive she was despite all the hardships she had suffered. I wish she could have had a better life. Flowers

Described as “the most giving, loving, supportive and admirable” young girl, Amber had shown hints of great promise. Although she had experienced immense suffering, she harboured an “amazing outlook” on life and loved art and singing, her loved ones said.

CurryandSnuggle · 08/08/2023 21:03

I cannot believe what I have read! Raped 5 months before her death by a boy, then separately raped and murdered by her own brother, only to then be sexually assaulted after her death by another unrelated man. How bloody horrendous and depraved!!! Poor girl. RIP

AHugeTinyMistake · 08/08/2023 21:12

RIP Amber.

It's unbearably sad. I wish she'd had a chance at a good life. I'm glad that the perps who abused and raped her are in prison now.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 08/08/2023 21:29

I just cant understand why she was sent to a children's home and her brother got to stay with the foster family. They must have known she would be more vulnerable in a situation like that.

I suspect Social Services said it would be much easier to find an alternative placement for her. What foster home or children's home wants to take on a 16/17 year old boy with a history of aggression towards younger children in his previous placement? When they could have the victimised child instead?

PatatiPatatras · 08/08/2023 23:31

I do feel like they sold her down the river to appease her brother...

IwantToRetire · 09/08/2023 00:30

I do feel like they sold her down the river to appease her brother...

Exactly - how could they do that.

And the horror of knowing that people at the last residence she was at said not to go and meet her brother.

So they all knew and she was still the one left to navigate a hostile system that allowed predatory men access to vulnerable women.

The man sentenced today raped her while she was asleep and had raped another woman when she was drunk.

Everybody knows, the system knows, that women are vulnerable to predatory men and they continue to give men the freedom to be near women. They never ever think they should protect women. Its almost like a few decades ago when the police and other authorities would write off partner violence as "just another domestic".

LizzieSiddal · 09/08/2023 08:41

What an horrific time she had. Just heartbreaking. RIP Amber.

risefromyourgrave · 09/08/2023 08:50

Maybe it’s wrong, but I think I’m as horrified at the man who assaulted her after death as I am at her brother. What kind of human would ever see a murdered girl and think to do something like that?! I hope that Stephen Corrigan faces serious repercussions for what he did.

It's absolutely psychopathic and just chills me to the bone. I hope his sentence is significant. I really wouldn't want to see a man capable of that on the streets ever again.

Amber was subjected to so much male violence in such a short time. Poor, poor girl.

And to see the rapist that has just been convicted had addiction issue from the age of nine? It's all almost impossible to comprehend.

They seem to have been happy housing a predatory rapist.

They seem to have been happy housing a predatory rapist.

Exactly and knowing that they still said she was the one who should move out of a home and into an (unsafe) institution.
