So is this person a woman? In which case surely it's a complete non story. Or are they a man? And why does the article not make it clear?

'Historic' - the World Cup's first out trans player

There is much discussion to be found about transgender athletes in sport. In Australia and New Zealand, one has been helping drive their country's bid for World Cup glory.

I mean I'm pretty sure she is a woman. I just don't understand why 'woman plays on women's football team' is ground breaking news.

Daily mail has the same story including the line "formerly Rebecca Quinn"

uhOhOP · 25/07/2023 22:53

Didn't read the article, but yeah, this person is a woman. She (I know, sorry...) goes by the mononym Quinn.

Pallisers · 25/07/2023 22:53

Canada's opening fixture - a 1-1 draw with Japan - came several days before transgender woman Laurel Hubbard competed in the weightlifting amid much media fanfare, thus allowing Quinn to make some quiet history.

They are a woman so they made "quiet" history - like no one gives a damn. Laurel Hubbard made loud history with "media fanfare". Because - well men ...

Brave new world that is so completely the way things have always been.

Plasmodesmata · 25/07/2023 22:57

It was quiet history because Quinn continues to play in the correct sex category and has no unfair advantage over the other players.
Laurel had the media fanfare because Laurel was competing in the incorrect sex category and therefore had an unfair advantage over the women competing. Even though, in the end, Laurel wasn't very good - there was a woman who missed out on her Olympic chance to accommodate Laurel.

dimorphism · 25/07/2023 22:59

So either gender doesn't matter in which case, great, the women's world cup is for the female sex class only, no matter what gender they all are (have they all been asked? If not, how transphobic! There could be 100s of different genders!).

Or, gender matters and not sex in which case Quinn should be playing in the nonbinary / transgender world cup. Can't have it both ways.

Quinn is lucky Quinn grew up during a period when girls sports were a thing because they won't be for much longer at this rate.

dimorphism · 25/07/2023 23:00

Quinn sounds like Quinn has figured out a clever way to get attention and money at the expense of other women athletes.

CorruptedCauldron · 25/07/2023 23:07

Quinn’s not increasing their testosterone levels, so they have no advantage over the regular women. Really, Quinn taking part in women’s football is a non-story. They have a non-binary gender identity and a female sex. The only difference between Quinn and any other woman on the pitch is the pronouns.

PuttingDownRoots · 25/07/2023 23:16

Sounds like quite a lot of sporty girls/women I know...

CaveMum · 25/07/2023 23:25

Does anyone know the full story on Barbra Banda of Nigeria, playing at the World Cup? I stumbled across this article which sounds very like the Caster Semenya situation but the BBC like to be so vague that it’s difficult to get to the truth of it.

How Zambia's Banda overcame gender eligibility row

Star Zambian striker Barbra Banda could light up the Women's World Cup despite missing the African qualifiers following a row over her eligibility.

CaveMum · 25/07/2023 23:35

Ignore my last post, I see there’s a separate thread on BB.

SD1978 · 25/07/2023 23:57

Quinn now identifies as non binary, with no hormone treatment and was born female. So basically no story as you thought!

NotBadConsidering · 26/07/2023 02:32

But there must be a story of some sort, because Quinn uses they/them pronouns! The ridiculousness of which is highlighted by the final sentences:

"I'd like to see more of them getting forward," says Johal. "Canada needs goals from anyone.
"And if they [Quinn] score, what a story."

If you need to qualify a sentence with square brackets because the pronoun is confusing people, maybe don’t use plural third person pronouns to describe one person.

Helleofabore · 26/07/2023 03:53

Not sure what history was being made at all. A female player is proving that female players can play football at the a World Cup for female football players.

BellaAmorosa · 26/07/2023 05:22

Woman footballer plays football in women's football competition. Groundbreaking!

Seriously, does she look around her and think that her teammates subscribe to feminine gender stereotypes?

Look at me, everyone! I'm special!

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/07/2023 05:33

When Quinn makes it onto the men's national team, then Quinn will be making history. Until then, "person wants to be like Madonna or Prince but isn't actually that interesting and plays football on a single sex team as the sex they were born" isn't news.

Use whatever pronouns you want, call yourself whatever you'd like, it's all gravy. We just pierced things, listened to inappropriate music and wore black. Plus ca change.

cornflakesandtea · 26/07/2023 06:37

Looking forward to seeing Quinn play with the men's national team too. Seems only right if Quinn is neither / both male and female.

Surely if she's neither male nor female, she doesn't play in either team?

Musomama1 · 26/07/2023 07:42

It is a non story but they'll probably be some nauseating article to come where Quinn talks about what it is like to be an 'enbie' person amongst these womeny things.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 26/07/2023 07:43

attention seeking woman plays on woman’s team - total non story but it’s obvious the BBC by publicising it are pushing an agenda

turbonerd · 26/07/2023 07:46

Where is the non-binary world cup I wonder?
If Quinn is non-binary Quinn should play on the non-binary team.

Or, as it is, Quinn is a woman playing on the women’s team.

zanahoria · 26/07/2023 07:49

Not only is this not a story but not even a new non story. We also had it two years ago during the Olympics how the Mighty Quinn amazes the world by playing football while insisting on special pronouns.

Why are you calling this person Barbra Banda of Nigeria when the very link you posted confirms that the player is from Zambia?

CaveMum · 26/07/2023 08:01

@MrsMaxDeWinter apologies for my mistake, I’m my defence I was posting in a very tired haze while sat with my poorly 6 year old.

No worries, six year olds will do that to the best of us!.

I really hope Zambia does not progress, which is a shame because I am from around there.

But some things are bigger than continental pride, and women's sports being for biological females is one hill I will die on.
