Just listening- “still confusion on self ID”

I do find it very hyperbolic the way this "intrusive" process is framed.

Compare to the process of claiming any disability benefits, claiming asylum, proving residency, or acquiring citizenship.

It's a paper exercise- hell, claiming UC or applying for a job is probably more intrusive.

They always say it's an intrusive and humiliating process, where a 'panel' decides whether they are 'trans' enough, so everyone gets the impression that they're standing naked in front of a panel of strangers who are deciding on their future.

Then they say that they never meet the panel, so it becomes clear that it's just about documents. But by then people are already sympathetic to the 'humiliation' they have to endure in order to get a GRC. It's manipulative.

The time is 1:36.40.

Important interview. Whatever your opinion on Labour is it is pretty clear the leadership are SCARED. They also are in a bind. They basically have admitted LWD and Rosie were right about self ID and Scottish/Welsh Labour were wrong.

They want to avoid questions. They want to avoid giving clear answers that ties them to difficult positions.

However they didn't think this through. If they keep refusing interviews Rosie does them instead. The questions keep coming.

This!

In the all together in front of a panel? Isn't that C4 "Naked Attraction"?

Very weird not to want to answer questions on a new policy. Suggests to me this is simply a muddy the waters exercise to try and persuade wavering, previously Labour voters, to stay on board. Obfuscation at its best. I think it's solved my dilemma. I cannot vote for a party that takes me for a fool.

It is not really policy

They are just throwing am idea out there to see if there any takers.

Only last December, Labour backed self ID in Scotland and all their members voted for it.

Now Dodds is saying they were all wrong.

I will suspend judgement until we see a concrete proposal and Labour MPs backing it

RealityFan · 25/07/2023 10:55

MrsOvertonsWindow · 25/07/2023 10:10

Labour will never put up anyone to speak about this. They know it's shot full of holes, incoherent, anti women & child safeguarding and based on outright lies (see the Stonewall statement today).
No matter how hard they try to pacify the trans extremists, journalists are always going to challenge them and we can watch them look like fools - again.

Helen Joyce's sunk costs in stark reality.

Worse than that, they think we're stupid. Like a bunch of cats where throwing a few treats out on the floor will pacify us.

Nope. The anger will only keep rising.

RebelliousCow · 25/07/2023 10:58

Yes, they think they are ahead of the game and in control - but the more that this issue is spoken about, the more they lose control. That is why there was 'no debate' for years.

They are still paid up members of Stonewall's champions scheme and are merely saying what they have been advised to say. If they are taking advice from Iain Anderson, they are in trouble.

Stonewall told everyone, just the other day, that they are not willing to compromise on anything. This is just a PR exercise in re-framing their intentions, using slightly different words and phrases, and utilising the sleight of hand of suggesting that they are no longer in favour of Self ID. -when they are ( because there will be an army of well paid and willing GPs who'll only be too happy to sign off every single applicant)

Webberley's probably already making plans about what to spend all the money on.

Helen Belcher said that constituents where she is knows she is Trans ..........................................and no one when she is on the doorstep brings it up as an issue - a mystery!

MavisMcMinty · 25/07/2023 11:10

Exactly! Also, people are generally polite in real life. It’s usually children who say the (socially) unsayable.

zanahoria · 25/07/2023 11:26

The whole concept of getting a single doctor to sign off could mean self ID by another name. It depends on how the doctors are regulated.

Yet Dodds says that her plan will protect single sex spaces, although it appears she opposes proposals to offer concrete definitions of sex in the equality act.

We are not much further along the line here. The devil is on the details.

The only real gain is that someone in the Labour team has stuck her head up but she must be willing to continue the conversation. We need to keep that going as it skewers all the #nodebate loons.

SammyScrounge · 25/07/2023 11:28

hoochycrone · 25/07/2023 07:43

Listening. Glad about Keir doing this.

Can we really trust Starmer? He flips his views when the wind changes. We will never know what that man actually believes. The only idea of his that seemed authentic was his belief that men had female sex organs. I cannot take him seriously now and knowing how powerful the trans lobby is in the Labour Party, I'd trust him about as far as I can throw him. For them the word woman has always included transwomen and all that follows on from that concept: single sex spaces become a thing of the past, the spread of child indoctrination will continue etc etc.
As for Rosie, can she really have forgotten how she was publicly bullied in the HofC for speaking up for women? And how Starmer did nothing about it? He has got a nerve to use her to try and convince us that he now respect the female half of the population.

SunnyEgg · 25/07/2023 11:30

It really is a few scraps then ‘bad faith’ if you don’t like it

A Dr is just a quick visit, what does that even mean in practise?

Then which single sex spaces exactly and how?

No wonder Dodds didn’t turn up

MavisMcMinty · 25/07/2023 11:37

I’m fine with Duffield doing the media rounds on this subject rather than Dodds, tbh.

Rosie's appearance on the programme and her guarded welcome to the new policy already noted in The Guardian.

"It looks broadly speaking as though they’re going in the right direction, and basically have just agreed with myself and other feminist activists and women’s groups, with what we’ve been saying for the last few years. It’s good to get a bit of clarity."

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2023/jul/25/michael-gove-petrol-cars-mps-rishi-sunak-climate-policy-uk-politics-live-latest-updates?page=with:block-64bf95328f081d44d14a89f7#block-64bf95328f081d44d14a89f7

If Labour continues to be too scared to discuss their new policy. Then it seems Rosie will get to speak instead and gets to criticise Labour's failings and note positive changes. So Labour are admitting Rosie and everyone else was right.

Rosie is now in reality the Shadow Shadow Minister for Women. Thanks for the promotion Labour. Does she get a payrise and an apology now?

We all know the detail is not there yet.

After years of taking flack, Rosie is now in a powerful position, Labour need her if they want to have any chance of getting a policy acceptable policy to the public.

I hope she makes the most of all the attention

Well ‘we all’ is a bit much. You may be happy not to hear detail and reality in practise for political gain.

I’d say it’s crucial.

SunnyEgg · 25/07/2023 12:10

And how can the detail ‘not be there yet’ anyway?

Surely making changes absolutely depends on the actual detail stacking up in practise

No Debate has shoehorned No Comment as well into our public life.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 25/07/2023 09:42

As pp said, why would you NOT have to provide paperwork and some sort of evidence or proof of genuine intent to change your entire identity?

You do if you want to change your citizenship (a much smaller chnage) - paperwork, interviews, tests, huge fees ...

That’s the nub of self ID and it does look as that battle has been won.

OP posts:
RudsyFarmer · 25/07/2023 22:41

Labour knows this is one issue they look absolutely fucking ridiculous discussing. It’s a huge failing on their part not to be decisive on where the line will be drawn when it comes to gender ideology and women’s rights as they are conflicting rights. It’s not enough to say ‘be kind’.
