Anyone else feel Pride is really toned down this year?

I was shopping yesterday evening in my local shopping centre & besides Primark & Schuh no other stores had a pride window display or even a sticker on the window. Flying Tiger had rainbow merchandise on the window but not specifically pride.
Precious years we had rainbow crossings in the car park, rainbow flags everywhere. Nothing like that this year.

In my opinion this toned down pride is much more inclusive & is signalling everyone is getting on with their lives & co existing. May just be my area but I found it very refreshing.

Perhaps they’re reading the room? Many people are sick of this stuff being forced onto us.

Moonandstarz · 08/06/2023 11:13

That's what I thought. I have lgb friends & neighbours, none have ever put up flags or pride symbols on social media. They are out & proud, loved & accepted by family & friends. They don't support the virtue signalling & feels it draws too much attention to them. They just want to get on with their lives & co exist.

I thought that last year, but my town has its pride march later in the year, and that was when it exploded with rainbows

No, not many. Some people on mumsnet

It would be a shame if gay individuals felt uncomfortable displaying pride flags, or attending celebrations, out of fear.

However I have no problem with fewer companies co-opting the rainbow in order to sell me more crap.

Our towns pride march is the end of the month but it looks like the Pride for the whole month of June has died a death & the parade will be the event which is the way it was for a number of years before the whole "pride month" became a thing. Barely any sign of pride around the town.

It's not individuals it's the shopping center & local businesses who aren't displaying pride decorations. Primark have a window display & Schuh a small window sticker but River Island etc have nothing which is refreshing. Just let people get on with their lives.

Call me a cynic but I think partly it’s due to a commercial decision. I noticed a lot of heavily reduced Pride related stock in John Lewis last year. This year, have seen little stock in store (not looked online).

If LGBTQ+ people are not buying the stock at expected levels, chasing the Pink Pound with Pride related marketing and branding is not going to be as lucrative and attractive to the already struggling retail sector.

I do like Pride related activity at work though, just a reminder to celebrate how far we’ve come, but I’m not into the commercial aspect of it all.

How would you know? My perception is not just from what I see online. Amongst my friends, family members.

People are tired of the anti-heterosexual narrative. I don’t see why anybody’s sexual persuasions need to be ‘brought to work with them.’. In the sane way I’m sure you’re not in the least bit interested of what happens between my sexual partner and I, I’m also not interested in what you’re up to with you sexual partner(s). It’s a non event except it’s literally an event!!

It costs money and they've probably realised by now it doesn't bring in much or any extra return. Especially important in the economic downturn, but it was only ever about profit.

ILoveCreamCrackersMe · 08/06/2023 11:45

It all blends into one I feel now and nobody cares.

At work it feels every second week is another lesbian, gay, trans, bi awareness week. Then again with Pride for a whole month. I've zoned out of it all completly.

Plus you've got all the awareness weeks for different cultures and disability.

All very worthy causes, albeit perhaps too much 'awareness' is actually pushing people the other way into apathy and disinterest.

No I don’t.

CBeebies targeted 0-5 year olds with gender identity dogma.

Waterstones is selling a book for children about how to find their gender identity.

Oxfam has targeted JKR and advertised a double mastectomy.

This.

Since the TRA are taking over and shouting loudly at any and every woman who dares raise any concern is it any surprise.

Did you see the dreadful slurs and racist and misogynistic comments Oxfam had in their video and Pride promotion?

Many LGB what to separate from the T Q ? + add ons now due to the negativity some of the supporters of the extras have created.

Have a look at Twitter. Mainstream news. Not just MN, many are actually questioning some of the things being put out there now.

Have you heard what a MAP is? Note the one used to fine a location. There are some very questionable groups joining in with the alphabet soup now.

I think there's been a definite surge in acceptable homophobia. That's what it is. I think things were getting better for a long while, but people hit out when they're in a bad place, and the UK isn't in a good place right now.

Unfortunately she probably is. She's probably the kind of person who also goes on about "anti-white" narratives and "when is white history month"?

Confusedmumannoyedson · 08/06/2023 12:05

oops phone... paedophiles not podo.... of course they need a voice

SirChenjins · 08/06/2023 12:05

The penny is dropping that the pretty colourful rainbow is actually a symbol that promotes putting rapists in female prisons. People aren’t as stupid as Stonewall etc think.

Confusedmumannoyedson · 08/06/2023 12:06

Some of the other groups that added to the flag are very anti gay and lesbian too. Hence, when some LGB what to break from the other bits (I don't blame them)

I wonder if companies are growing a little self-conscious about rainbow-washing? Or possibly there's a perception that the co-opting of Pride by the trans movement has made it a little tricker to navigate, so best to stay out of it. Look at Oxfam's utter disaster this week.

Moonandstarz · 08/06/2023 12:13

Zodfa · 08/06/2023 11:32

It costs money and they've probably realised by now it doesn't bring in much or any extra return. Especially important in the economic downturn, but it was only ever about profit.

That's what DH said, it's probably too costly for councils & shopping centres to continue doing big displays.. Even for smaller companies merchandising & window displays are expensive.
As I said our local pride parade is going ahead as it has for years, it's always very well supported but the whole "pride month" really is a non event.
