To be fair, this is for pride week not International women’s day. The outfit is not hyper sexualised like some drag queens and it is elements of the characters personality not the outfit that is being used in work.

There needs to be a balance and for me this is not an issue. Drag queen story time is a completely different issue.

Completely agree

Heliotroper · 05/06/2023 11:31

So drag queens need a month to celebrate who they are? Nevermind that they are everywhere from TV to the libraries are every other month of the year.

YourApplePie · 05/06/2023 11:35

This feels like fishing for something to be mad about.

MrsJamin · 05/06/2023 11:37

As a Nationwide customer, I think I have the right to be mad about the fact that they are endorsing one of their call centre employees to have a fake name and not to prioritise being methodical when talking to me about my money.

Can we have a list of what we are and aren't allowed to get cross about, please?

Speak for yourself. This forum is an echo chamber.
My opinion is that a company as large as nationwide supporting Pride is a great decision.

Inclusion doesn't mean excluded groups that you don't consider match your view.

Are drag queens were an excluded group though?

Speak for yourself. This forum is an echo chamber.

Except it's not, it may have a strong leaning to one position, but the fact that you have been able to post a dissenting opinion and not be banned, or have your post deleted proves that it's anything but an echo chamber.

This. I have my mortgage and current account with Nationwide and, being an actual female subject to gender sexed pay gap who had to work harder to afford a house than my male counterparts, I find it pretty offensive that my mortgage lender thinks that womanface is OK.

bluemoonswoon · 05/06/2023 11:52

Oh get a grip. I've got no problem with drag.
I do with men in women's prisons and men in women's sports and men in (some) female only spaces.
But drag isn't an issue for me and some of the pearl clutching on here is undermining the more important issues rightly raised on mumsnet.

JellySaurus · 05/06/2023 11:53

I wonder whether the lack of clarity in this video is bug out feature.

Rewatching, I think that he uses his DQ skills to try and enhance his communication with customers, rather than that he comes to work in DQ. That said, his communication skills need improving: I don't think 'methodical' was the word he was looking for. Interactions with a financial institution need to be methodical. It is crucial. But they can certainly be more human, more personal.

As for the target demographic, perhaps we are not it. Perhaps they are trying to reach beyond their largest demographics and specifically attract TQ+ people (feature turned into bug).

Financial institutions don't just deal with finance. They do engage in social engineering. That's exactly the original purpose of building societies. They were set up to enable people who were not already wealthy to obtain mortgages and buy their own homes.

Shhhquirrel · 05/06/2023 11:58

FourTeaFallOut · 05/06/2023 10:48

But I find the grotesque parody of women and womanhood offensive. I don't want my mortgage holder to celebrate that any more than I'd want them to celebrate the mockery of anyone else.

This completely. Shame on Nationwide for supporting ‘Woman face’.

funnelfan · 05/06/2023 12:19

It's Pride month, and drag and trans seem to be dominating the messaging. If we boycott every company with a tin-eared social media team then we won't have anywhere to spend (or save) our money in a few weeks' time.

In general, I applaud any company trying to make themselves a more inclusive place to work and do business. Depending on the organisation, I may be cynical on whether its done for a PR box-ticking exercise or out of a genuine respect for their employees and customers.

I presume "bring your whole self to work" started originally so that gay and lesbian folk could be out and have a photo of their partner on their desk/talk about their weekend plans, same as everyone else. I wouldn't want it any other way. But when it comes to drag and trans I'm also think professionalism is a very under rated virtue these days. I leave my true grumpy and cynical self at home, I don't think they'd want the "whole" me in the office.

Lcb123 · 05/06/2023 12:31

I’m proud to bank with nationwide. Honestly, you need to get out more if you think this is worth fussing over

Treaclemine · 05/06/2023 12:37

I have been considering a NW account for some time. Barclays has left my village. Lloyds has left my village. Barclays has left the next village, which only has NW left, And it's mutual which is a plus.
But not now. Womanface indeed.

Whatwouldscullydo · 05/06/2023 12:39

Why can't companies just remain politically, religiously , ideologically etc neutral.

The only pre requisit for entering an establishment or purchasing products/services is that you behave yourself when on the premises. People are free to have whatever views they want regardless of how disturbing /phobic/disgusting etc that they are . No matter how much people may disagree. As long as said customer is not abusive , fraudulent and fulfils the criteria to be able to purchase the product then then that's all thats required surely.

I work in retail. As long as staff and customers are not abused what your views are , is irrelevant.

Just bloody sell your shit and be done with it.

FusionChefGeoff · 05/06/2023 12:41

I love the overwhelming majority of comments are against this.

If they and everyone else absolutely HAS to do a campaign along these lines, why can't everyone just feature completely normal, run of the mill gay and bisexual people who are just getting along being themselves at work?! Surely focussing on such an extreme personality / stereotype is massively harmful?!

You are asking for them to be excluded

It's bloody pride month

Dumbo12 · 05/06/2023 12:44

If the chap had worn black face to work, quite rightly all hell would have rained down on him. If he was able bodied and parodied being disabled, the same would have happened. But be a parody of a woman, not only knock yourself out, but applauded for it!

When you talk about an excluded group, do you mean excluded from society? That’s what I was querying. There are questions to be asked about whether drag is suitable entertainment for children and whether drag is offensive to women but that hasn’t resulted in society at large shunning them, in fact they seem to be celebrated pretty often. Maybe it’s more accurate to say they are controversial.

...on twitter. It's hardly the general consensus is it. Most people abandoned it years ago.
Get some perspective ffs

bluemoonswoon · 05/06/2023 14:23

I don't really care if some people find drag (or anything) offensive. Who cares if it upsets you? I quite enjoy drag culture. Some people find women kissing offensive. I don't care about them either.
However I do care when women's rights are undermined regarding trans rights.
Don't conflate the two.
Being offended by something is completely different having rights removed.
