Feminist book discussion??

Anyone fancy a book discussion?

I've read a few recently and would looove to hear other's thoughts on them. Also really interested to read and then discuss books others think are essential reading for feminists.

Obviously material girls by Kathleen stock is current. I've seen lots of posters here have read hags. Or the invisible woman. I've read those ones but can easily read other books if there is interest in discussing other books just tell me what to read! What would people like to discuss? (then give me a week to read it and join the discussion if it's not one I've read haha)

Great idea. Let's get forensic!!

ArabeIIaScott · 04/06/2023 21:19

Good idea! I've started Hags but then put it down somewhere in one of the piles and I'm not sure where it is. I could probably dig it out.

Boiledbeetle · 04/06/2023 22:48

I lost my copy when i had visitors the other week i tidied it away somewhere and now i can't find it. I may have to resort to my kindle version.

It may not be the sort of book you had in mind but I did spend a lovely afternoon reading Christina Dalchers Vox the other day which had me thinking in equal measure this could never happen and god this so could happen! It's obviously fiction but it makes for an interesting read. (Also on kindle unlimited at the moment).

SelfPortraitWithHagstone · 05/06/2023 09:57

Christina Dalcher is also a brave and principled feminist - I don't like judging books by the qualities of their creators, but in this case can't help liking the novel even more because of her... 😊

PurpleBugz · 05/06/2023 10:24

Ok so looks like Hags is the book to discuss as a couple have mentioned it? (Then we can do Christina Dalcher next time if people want?)

Do people want time to read the book? Give other's time to read it if they want to join in? How long do people want?

And she acknowledges people who've read her book! What's not to love!

Can we add The Authority Gap to the list?
I have had a copy since Christmas but not got around to reading it.

Am currently reading a biography of Sylvia Pankhurst, but at 900 pages it is taking me a while.

tourdefrance · 05/06/2023 10:53

I’ve also just read a great book by @Boiledbeetle . Or should that be edited by? Highly recommended.

Boiledbeetle · 05/06/2023 10:57

Back, to the OPs query, I've just checked my essential latest downloaded books to read when I get a chance.

But I'm happy to read any of the below, it may actually make me read them as kindle is not my favourite way to read a book.

(Oh has that photo also 'accidentally' got our book of poems written by angry feminist mumsnetters on it that is now available as an e-book!!!! But please don't decide to dissect that one, I'm not sure it would stand up to that level of scrutiny! 😁)

I've also got Trans and Invisible Women to read. I've started Invisible Women, but had to put it down as I had things I really needed to do at the time. I think I've read the first couple of chapters of Trans but my head wasnt in the right space when I started it, (you know when you end up reading the same paragraph 10 times) and I've yet to go back to it.

I'm also open to other suggestions!

I see we crossed posts! 😁

@Boiledbeetle

I found invisible woman was good on audiobook. It's stat heavy so I think I'd have struggled to digest it sat reading but on in the background as I sort the kitchen I was able to pour my anger at what I heard into removing limescale 😂

Yes, I'd be up for this. Decide on a title and give a few days lead in time for me to read/reread?

I was in a bookshop the other day admiring how front and centre 'Time to Think' was. I noticed another book with a title along the lines of 'This isn't going to hurt' or 'This will only hurt for a moment'. From the blurb, I think it's along the lines of Invisible Women but in medicine. I'm cautious about buying books that I haven't seen properly reviewed. For example, there's a book out called 'Womb(s)', which apparently culminates in the brave new world of transplanted uteruses...uteri because tw are definitely w.

ArabeIIaScott · 05/06/2023 11:36

I'd be interested in reading a book that is countering the feminist views largely held on this board - I'd suggest Judith Butler or something but I like you all too much.

Sally Hines' 'Is Gender Fluid'? Any suggestions for a decent, readable, interesting case for the opposition would be great!

Boiledbeetle · 05/06/2023 11:36

@PurpleBugz yeah from the chunk i read it is a statistics heavy read, plus it does raise the pressure somewhat! I bet it worked wonders on the limescale!

@IcakethereforeIam I keep forgetting about time to think I must add it to my to buy list. I think I'll give wombs a miss though from that description!

StephanieSuperpowers · 05/06/2023 12:29

We could do a pro our side, anti our side rotation? So say we started with hags and then on to is gender fluid?

StephanieSuperpowers · 05/06/2023 12:29

And so on into infinity...

ArabeIIaScott · 05/06/2023 13:00

Good plan. I like the idea of starting with hags.

CatAmongThePigeon · 05/06/2023 13:03

I'd love to join, I have Hags ready to read

IcakethereforeIam · 05/06/2023 14:09

I have hags, unread so far but fired up and ready to go!

ArdeteiMasazxu · 05/06/2023 14:13

I've recently finished Testosterone Rex by Cordelia Fine which was very good. Will check out some of the others mentioned above

heartofglass23 · 05/06/2023 14:29

I'd join that.

PurpleBugz · 05/06/2023 14:39

Ok the book list is

Book1: Hags by Victoria smith

Book 2: Is Gender Fluid by Sally Hines. Or a similar book from a perspective we on this board would not ordinarily consider to be our perspective.

Future books of interest:
Vox by Christina Dalchers
The Authority Gap
Trans
Invisible women
Femlandia by Christina Dalci
Material girls by Kathleen stock

My next question is how long do we need per book? Should we plan a chapter each week? Or read the whole book then discuss? What works for people?

OP posts:
PurpleBugz · 05/06/2023 14:45

Oh and I will also be keeping a list of books we may not discuss but we recommend.

Book one on this list obviously under the duvet of darkness

I'm actually tempted to put invisible woman on this list. It's full to the brim of research and statistics. There is no argument against the overwhelming evidence of inequality facing women globally. I don't remember it having a theory to discuss?? Other than the default male. Not sure what a discussion on this book would be other than us quoting particular parts and ranting about the injustice. Or maybe that's just how I would approach discussion on this book

Is another one I've been meaning to read.

IcakethereforeIam · 05/06/2023 15:29
