Feminist book discussion??

Anyone fancy a book discussion?

I've read a few recently and would looove to hear other's thoughts on them. Also really interested to read and then discuss books others think are essential reading for feminists.

Obviously material girls by Kathleen stock is current. I've seen lots of posters here have read hags. Or the invisible woman. I've read those ones but can easily read other books if there is interest in discussing other books just tell me what to read! What would people like to discuss? (then give me a week to read it and join the discussion if it's not one I've read haha)

I'd like to join in. Have Hags on Kindle. I'd prefer to read the whole book then discuss - need a deadline to make me prioritise it!

Ok the whole book then. How long would you like before we start discussing?

Saturday? Some people read slower than other and/or have other commitments, so this is just a negotiating position.

AsTreesWalking · 05/06/2023 17:19

Great, I'm in. It will make me read these books (and not just stuff on Victorian women's education) I may need longer than Saturday though...

And by Saturday everyone even if life gets in the way should have been able to sneak in the first few chapters in at least. (Darnation this will eat drastically into my candy crush time!)

Oh and I will also be keeping a list of books we may not discuss but we recommend.

Book one on this list obviously under the duvet of darkness

😘

I'd love to join. I have read most of the books mentioned here and can get hold of the others.

Invisible Women is very well researched (based on the bits I am very familiar with), but it could certainly be discussed within the wider framework of a) how things were allowed to stay like this and b) how to change the decision-makers to take women into account.

Would this be only about recent books or also about older books? I'm thinking of Gina Rippon's The Gendered Brain which is worth knowing about, and perhaps some feminist classics?

ArabeIIaScott · 05/06/2023 18:49

Well up for older books, too!

IcakethereforeIam · 05/06/2023 19:27

If this takes off we could do loads.

Incidentally, I noticed (while I was trying to find a book I think I've hallucinated) Amazon doesn't have a section for feminist books 🙁

It does. But you have to select

books

Then

PoliticsPolitics, Philosophy & Social Sciences

then

Women's Studies

Then

Feminist Criticism

Annoyingly as i typed that they updated the bloody categories titles.

They are now as below on the helpful image.

Feminist book discussion??
IcakethereforeIam · 05/06/2023 19:58

It should have its own section in the sidebar like LGBTQ+ does.

Boiledbeetle · 05/06/2023 20:00

I know it's infuriating how far in to the categories you have to go for feminism to appear

tourdefrance · 05/06/2023 20:03

Filia have a feminist bookshop on bookshop.org .

Shall we reconvene Saturday after tea (dinner to you Southerners Smile). If we've read it (Hags) crack on, if not set another date?

PurpleBugz · 05/06/2023 21:34

Ok so suggestions for Saturday but also suggestion that may be too soon. Speak up people so I can work out a consensus

My next question is how frequently do we want to do this?

I think I will put together a list and then the dates we will do the books so people can dip in and out and slower readers or those time poor can pick the books they want and start ahead.

I’m open to suggestions on questions to pose etc. Googling book club questions isn’t giving the best ideas

Keep book suggestions coming. And yes I agree older books should be included too- if people still would recommend them they must be saying important stuff??

I can do hags by Saturday

nepeta · 05/06/2023 21:46

I've read Hags, and can refresh my memory easily enough so Saturday would be fine.

Boiledbeetle · 05/06/2023 21:57

I suspect it may be play it by ear to begin with.

I've just discovered the text to talk option on the kindle app.

I shall stop getting it to read sweary poems and swap over to Hags! (hopes the option is enabled)

tourdefrance · 06/06/2023 07:27

Saturday too soon for me. Will go to the library at lunchtime to see if they have a copy I can borrow so may have started it at best.

I read a book a week on average but already have 2 actual and 1 audio on the go!

tourdefrance · 06/06/2023 07:28

So I would say one book a month would be about right to allow time to read other stuff in between.

ArabeIIaScott · 06/06/2023 08:13

Book a month sounds good to me.

IcakethereforeIam · 06/06/2023 08:42

I suggested Saturday just to get the ball rolling, no problem at all with a later date.
