Is Ed a full time woman now then?

Last I heard he was picking and choosing at his convenience.

‘one woman show’ more exciting than one-man show perhaps.

See I’m sure that would be a very entertaining show - watching a skilled and very funny actor playing all the different characters in a well-loved, wonderful Dickens’ novel.

But not for one minute would I imagine that all the different characters were being played by a man who is, that day, deciding to present as a woman playing all the different characters. So when Eddie pretends to be Estelle, he is not a woman pretending to be another woman, he’ll, in my eyes, be a man pretending to be a woman.

And when Eddie pretends to be Pip, he’ll be an elderly man pretending to be a young boy (drawing upon some personal, first-hand knowledge of what that might feel like) I know Eddie probably hasn’t had first-hand knowledge of stumbling about foggy marshes helping out convicts but he’ll draw upon the actors’ skill to bring this all alive marvellously, I’m sure.

It’s all an act this acting malarkey isn’t it Eddie? Your comedic talents are brilliant.

Indeed. A very talented and very funny actor.

It's such a shame that Eddie, who does regularly change between "girl mode" and "boy mode" felt the need for any pronouns or pseudo biological description at all in this promotion.

It's a solo performance, where it takes skill to become each character, regardless of age or sex. The fact that it allows Eddie to share gender exploration as part of the journey could be a positive all round.
Instead, it feels like a hostile takeover of women's achievements.

Who the fuck knows. Or cares.

Ed will do whatever keeps Ed relevant. Grafters gotta graft.

Takes a special kind of personal to perform a love story with themselves. Perfect role for EI.

A skilled and talented actor? I see no skill or talent in Izzard's performance of 'woman'.

He’s not that skilled - he’s never convinced me he’s anything other than a cross dresser.

What other people identify as or who they like to sleep with is of no concern to me.

Just wondering why other people consider it their business?

Quite the ratio! As pp pointed out, this could simply be described as a solo show or one-hander. The Guardian has deliberately chosen to promote this as a 'one woman show' but clearly very few people are having it.

Because when a male person claims they are a woman and society accepts this, it forces all women - or rather, all people who previously believed themselves to be women because of their adult female bodies - to chose between keeping the name woman and accepting they are now labelled as having a specific type of mind rather than a specific type of body, or rejecting the name woman, retain the right to have whatever type of mind they have in their female body, but lose the right to all the "women-only" provisions and rights that were created for their sex but have been usurped by this redefinition of womanhood to include the male sex.

So as a female bodied person who neither wants to be relegated to the female-minded nor to lose her sex-based rights, the hell yes this is of concern to me and the hell yes this is my business!

Yes, could be called a one-hander indeed for the person pictured below....

FlirtsWithRhinos says it very well, but here's another explanation for why we care, for those who don't understand.

Imagine if Eddie Izzard said he identified as a black American. And then the Guardian wrote a review of his show making several references to the fact that he was a black American. It's offensive for two reasons.

One is that it's a newspaper deliberately and blatantly lying to its readers, when the job of newspapers is to report the truth.

The other is that it's insulting to people who are genuinely black Americans, because it says that their rich and unique identity, which has been forged out of several hundred years of slavery, lynching, Jim Crow laws and discrimination, is so meaningless that it can be casually adopted by a white British person.

Noone is forced to do anything.

The existence of transwomen doesn't "erase" women (whatever that actually means, I'd heard it a lot).

"the hell yes this is of concern to me and the hell yes this is my business!"

You'll also find a lot of women, particularly from the younger generations, really don't care what Izzard identifies as and have other things to think about.
