Labour councillor who complained of transphobia at party conference

So the Labour Councillor who complained of transphobia at the 2021 party conference was mistakenly declared winner in the recent local elections.

It was a mistake and whilst the declaration is legally binding rather than stepping aside and acknowledging the democratic decision of voters they have taken their seat and applied to be on various committees.

Appalling sense of entitlement and lack of ethics. If the Labour Party don’t act on this they are complicit and will show they have as little regard for democracy as they do for women.

Article from local news here:

https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/23518361.nelson-town-council-hit-election-official-error/

I did not know that what the official states is legally binding even if they have made a mistake or been given incorrect information. It looks likely that the local Conservative councillors will organise the appropriate legal challenge to this, but in the meantime the "elected" Labour candidate should make a point of not taking any action (voting etc) that could have long term effects. They don't have a mandate to do so, and there is no chance of misunderstanding that!

sashagabadon · 15/05/2023 11:53

I understand why it would be legally binding or there would be constant challenges but it is very unhonourable not to step aside if a mistake has been made. I wonder how the mistake was made in the first place as that is an obvious point of weakness in the system if the official him or herself is compromised. Not saying that is the case here.

TheBiologyStupid · 15/05/2023 12:53

Shocking - the only honourable thing to do is to stay away from any meetings, not sign up to join various committees!

ArabeIIaScott · 15/05/2023 12:55

Whit? That's mad.

SunnyEgg · 15/05/2023 12:59

Blimey I haven’t really followed what Labour are especially pleased about but was this one of the councils where they were happy they’d taken over

Or does it not make any difference

Collidascope · 15/05/2023 13:03

Ah, I didn't realise it was this rather aggressive person:

Colour me shocked that they aren't standing down.

Colour me shocked indeed. Doesn't sound like a very honourable person.

All the 'she she she' hides what was going on in that linked story. They're (obviously) male and were in the ladies toilets at the conference where they claim they faced abuse.

ArabeIIaScott · 15/05/2023 13:29

Oh, I remember that person. And that incident.

unless I missed it, the precise nature of the "transphobia" was not stated, was it? might have been an eye roll for all we know.

ArabeIIaScott · 15/05/2023 13:32

It'll cost £10k to fix the error, apparently.

Commenter is correct that this is a pyrrhic victory.

BewaretheIckabog · 15/05/2023 16:02

Certainly some interesting parallels in expecting people to treat you as a rightfully elected representative when you are not and being in spaces where you don’t belong.

Not exactly classy. Or honest. Or interested in democracy.

Seems pretty par for the course for transactivism? Secret deals behind closed doors, avoiding democratic scrutiny, mask wearing when protesting about women speaking in public, contempt for the rights of other groups....

Certain people fit right in.

Quite.

Spot on!

determinedtomakethiswork · 16/05/2023 07:19

Very true! And for that reason who the hell would want this person representing them?

JacquelinePot · 16/05/2023 07:23

Can you imagine actually taking up a position in the situation, sitting in meetings and voting on issues when you've absolutely no right to be there? That would be totally mortifying foe most people, surely?

It says an awful lot about this person; none of it good.

NotHavingIt · 16/05/2023 07:54

One word will do and that is 'Narcissism'. A text book example.

JellySaurus · 16/05/2023 08:19

It would seem that the leopard does not change its spots.

BewaretheIckabog · 16/05/2023 08:57

Yep, it seems they are currently identifying as the councillor for Nelson.

Dim memory of some toilet incident. Was a mobility scooter involved?
