Judy Blume & Dylan Mulvaney

I think I just had some sort of revelation.
I’m actually furious. Maybe I’m overreacting but Judy Blume wrote a book called Are you There God? It’s me, Margaret in the 70s. My myself, and I bet many others of my era, it was the first time I ever read a book that depicted a girl going through puberty like me. It made me less afraid of periods, and growing breasts which I did precociously. It meant so much to me.

So there is a film adaptation coming out and I was ecstatic when I saw the news.

Just seen the first piece of promo apart from the trailer that I have come across - TikTok suggested it to me - and it’s a cosy little chat between Judy Blume the author and Dylan Mulvaney. Talking about what it’s like to be a girl, grow breasts and such…
Really, Judy fucking Blume? Why of all people would you choose to promote the movie, which I would presume would have a target audience of preteen and teen girls, with a person that will never go through female puberty, will never bleed between their legs like a girl, never has to worry about buying sanitary products, or a million other things girls worry about.

I’m sure they have their own many and varied things to worry about, and lots of experiences that might be great to share with their audience, but really?

I just feel like I’ve been pissed on from a great height. I may well be overreacting - forgive me, I’m due on.

I'm so disappointed in Judy.

The book is about teenage female puberty.
Dylan has not went through teenage female puberty, or female puberty at any age.
What the hell is Judy Blume playing at?
She could have picked a young female sports person to chat to but has chosen to talk about this with a person who has not went through female puberty. Dylan growing breasts as a result of hormones will NEVER NEVER understand what teenage girls deal with regarding puberty. Never.

This has to fucking stop

Whaeanui · 13/05/2023 07:29

Oh that’s a fucking let down isn’t it? What a stupid insulting thing to do.

ThePoshUns · 13/05/2023 07:30

So disappointing.
I adored Judy Blume's books back in the day. Her books resonated with pre teen me so much.
Can we ( women) have anything for ourselves?

MalagaNights · 13/05/2023 07:31

My God this is so disappointing.
What a betrayal of young girls for Judy Blume to speak to this man pretending to be a girl about the experience of developing female bodies.

It's grotesque.

Shame on you Judy Blume.

She's needs a backlash against this stronger than the one she got for supporting JKR.

What’s with his Mary Tyler Moore hairdo?

There always has to be a certain contrived ‘look’. Real wimbins don’t wear jeans and a jumper, oh no. We are dolled up to the nines every day in our best ‘Cher from Clueless’ attire at all times. Real wimbins wear short skirts, nail polish and big hair a Southern pageant mama would be proud of. That’s a real wimbin, we’re all rubbish at it obvs. Thank God we’ve got ‘Dylan-day eleventy billion of being a girl but not really’ to show us the way. It’s honestly not a sexual fetish though. It’s really not. These are real feelz.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 13/05/2023 07:36

So disappointing.

I've never read the book (I don't remember anyone my age reading it) but saw the film last week with my mum and 2 teen boys. It was great. Even the boys loved it.

MightyEagle · 13/05/2023 07:36

Judy Blume is no idiot. This is so insanely ridiculous, I feel she must be making a point. And no one can cancel her for taking the piss out of them by simply letting them speak their truth. Genius move.

(FWIW I think she's belongs to the group of women who thought they could be kind and inclusive whilst still retaining some shred of commonsense. I think there's a fair nunber of us on here who were in that category at one point! And she's on a very steep learning curve)

Dryfield · 13/05/2023 07:37

So what can we do? Who do we write to/email?
I can't bear to watch it either (saw a bit with the sound off) I just cannot get my head around anyone taking DM seriously as a 'girl' but apparently they do. It's insanity!

That crossed my mind too. The more insanity shown: the more sunlight.

FrancescaContini · 13/05/2023 07:43

I’m also very disappointed in her. Grew up reading her books.

What a man can tell girls about becoming a woman, I have no idea. It’s grotesque.

AlisonDonut · 13/05/2023 07:48

I've never read any of her books, never heard of her until this whole fiasco.

I read this morning that the film is bombing at the box office.

Did they learn nothing from Bud Lite?

bellinisurge · 13/05/2023 07:48

Let's hope she's being a genius rather than a craven idiot. For a brief period, I wondered if DM was doing the same - trolling the TRAs - but I think not.

MrsJamin · 13/05/2023 07:56

This will all be down to pr/marketing at Lionsgate. They were the ones that made Judy do a U turn and this interview would have been booked by them to try and secure that message to the woke public that Judy is not transphobic.
Although, like Bud Light, they have misjudged this and have not realised that it's worse to have a man cosplaying womanhood talking about pads and improving his bust. You could have had a normal man interviewing Judy about the film (it would have been slightly odd but OK?) but this is not the same at all, due to Dylan's questions and comments after her answers being all about Dylan trying to muscle in to being included in the conversation about being a woman. Who better than Dylan to understand what it's like to become a woman, amiright? 🙄

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/05/2023 08:00

This is so grotesquely inappropriate and makes me not want to touch the film with a barge pole. I will not have young girls’ puberty used as fetish material by adult men and go along with that. Shame on Judy Blume for doing this interview.

MalagaNights · 13/05/2023 08:04

The Bud Lite boycott sent a real message to companies: don't use this Trans crap to market at men.

When are we going to have a successful boycott which says don't use this Trans crap to use men pretending to be women to market to women.

When are women going to move from complaining in small groups to a mass action which says: No.

It's interesting the men did this first. Women on mass are not saying: No.

So we keep getting this crap

Jonei · 13/05/2023 08:13

It's sad to have to do this to JB, but a mass boycot of the film needs to happen. Another Bud Lite moment.

WeAreTheHeroes · 13/05/2023 06:02

Does DM claim to have read the book as a child? I think the poster who stated he's a grifter is right. I hope to goodness no one casts Mulvaney in any female theatre roles in future.

I can't imagine DM would have read it. DM's face is carefully blank on the subject of the book. Why would DM read it, it's about things DM has no experience or knowledge of?

DM is there to ostensibly correlate they's experience of 'becoming' a woman with that of a young girl's.

Wonder how this is going down with women of the US... are they going to take their daughters to listen to Dylan's pearls of wisdom on 'becoming a woman'?

DobbysTeaCosy · 13/05/2023 08:16

It's interesting the men did this first. Women on mass are not saying: No.

The thing about the bud thing and why it took off but the bra thing didn't is because the people who don't believe in stereotypes were not the driving force.

In the bud and, the people who made the most noise were the group of people hugely invested in stereotypes such as real men drink beer, drive fast, shaf girls yadada. Although in this particular incident our views appeared to align they really didn't. They think men should act in a certain way and that men cannot be women. Trans think acting in a certain way makes you a woman. We think act how you want, but sex is immutable.

In the case of the bra, there are many women who recognise the sexism in mimicking stereotypes to pretend to be a woman, but there are plenty of women who think it's progressive yadada.

Basically the invested in stereotypes and conservative sex roles is a big market. Invested in stereotypes because trans ideology is a big market.
Sadly as always, against stereotypes because hate sexism and actually feminist is as it has always been, a relatively small market.

And thanks to this and #be kind social conditioning women are not likely to speak out enmasse.

Agreed. It really is utterly perverse and I'm horrified that Judy let herself be talked in to this (assuming she didn't seek out Dylan).

Why is this man so fixated on pubescent girlhood and sanitary products? Instead of the fawning those are the questions that should be asked of him.

RinklyRomaine · 13/05/2023 08:24

Blume is SO disappointing. The same vein as Margaret Atwood. She bloody knows, and age is no excuse. Even if you overlook the disgusting misogyny and mockery of women, Dylan is literally a walking billboard for the gender medical industry. Hey, kids, a bit of facial surgery and some pills and you too can go from camp no one to millionaire TikTok influencer at the Whitehorse, the Grammys, the premieres! He is SO damaging and for Blume to schill for him and them like this, off the back of "Are You There" is a disgrace.

Film review:

'Everything that we have held to be true from a scientific, psychological, and sociological perspective has been turned on its head — and not in a good way. Instead of teaching our children how to deal with the complex emotions associated with adolescence, we give them license to turn their bodies into science projects. We say that is okay to take puberty blockers, cut their breasts off, and mutilate their genitals with little thought given to the numerous future ramifications, such as infertility and other physical and psychological side effects..

A New Judy Blume Film Refuses to Bow to Woke - The American Spectator | USA News and Politics

In a world that glorifies faux "women," the film adaptation of Judy Blume’s Margaret, is a powerful portrayal of true womanhood.

Judy’s a traitorous coward and Dylan is coming across as very dodgy. Anyone with any sense would have refused this job. Why would a male person think it was a good idea to get involved in something about young girls?

Judy might as well lie down and say “Walk all over me, men. I’m only a silly, inferior woman. Nothing at all really”. Idiot! What a message to send to young girls.

And when are we seeing a transracial person promoting a film about black history and black rights? Yep, never. It’s only women you can crap on with impunity, same as it’s ever been. Aided, of course, by people like doormats like Judy.
