Judy Blume & Dylan Mulvaney

I think I just had some sort of revelation.
I’m actually furious. Maybe I’m overreacting but Judy Blume wrote a book called Are you There God? It’s me, Margaret in the 70s. My myself, and I bet many others of my era, it was the first time I ever read a book that depicted a girl going through puberty like me. It made me less afraid of periods, and growing breasts which I did precociously. It meant so much to me.

So there is a film adaptation coming out and I was ecstatic when I saw the news.

Just seen the first piece of promo apart from the trailer that I have come across - TikTok suggested it to me - and it’s a cosy little chat between Judy Blume the author and Dylan Mulvaney. Talking about what it’s like to be a girl, grow breasts and such…
Really, Judy fucking Blume? Why of all people would you choose to promote the movie, which I would presume would have a target audience of preteen and teen girls, with a person that will never go through female puberty, will never bleed between their legs like a girl, never has to worry about buying sanitary products, or a million other things girls worry about.

I’m sure they have their own many and varied things to worry about, and lots of experiences that might be great to share with their audience, but really?

I just feel like I’ve been pissed on from a great height. I may well be overreacting - forgive me, I’m due on.

Oh Judy Blume.
What a betrayal.
She can't need the money that much.

She seems so uncomfortable throughout. She literally doesn't know how to answer his idiotic questions ..'advice to someone new to their womanhood' 🤮 & turning everything around to him (saying & gesticulating about waiting for his breasts to grow 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮)

I feel this 85 yo iconic author was pushed into this - shame on her PR machine.

ArabeIIaScott · 12/05/2023 23:07

Still Dylan is singlehandedly peaking the US, so more power to Dylan.

Mrsjayy · 12/05/2023 23:08

Shame on her Pr team indeed,

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 12/05/2023 23:10

It seems like a clueless marketing person thought Dylan was a way to attract the tiktok youth?

I read the book when i was young, and I can't see how the potential new audience overlaps with Dylan's? Its about girls starting their period, so 9 to 13? Dylan is an adult entertainer selling beer and talking about how many days hes been a girl.

Or do they want theatres full of young teens girls and men wanting to be teen girls?

LizzieSiddal · 12/05/2023 23:11

This is so disappointing. What the
fuck is she thinking.

Nicknamesforviolet · 12/05/2023 23:12

I'm so disappointed 😞

NurseCranesRolodex · 12/05/2023 23:15

Fuck JB, perhaps she is growing her own penis.
Mulveney is a parasitic, woman hating little prick and I'd love to know the dirt he has on these people who keep booking him.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 12/05/2023 23:15

I won't be seeing it then.
I still have the book from when I was a teen.

TrashyPanda · 12/05/2023 23:21

Who the hell thought that was a good idea?

who would want their young daughter to talk about puberty with Mulvanney???

KalimbaMoon · 12/05/2023 23:21

Thing is, female biology is terfy, no getting around it, and that’s okay. Female puberty affects women and girls, not men and boys. There’s no sane reason to centre males when talking about female puberty, they are excluded from this experience, like it or not. It feels like we’ve entered the realms of satire to be honest. I have no doubt that Judy has had a metaphorical BeKind gun pointed at her head to make her do something as batshit as this. I feel sad for her.

Novatherova · 12/05/2023 23:23

Who are these people? Am I missing something

Daisypain · 12/05/2023 23:26

I really hate the current cultural landscape.

I spend so much time wanting to scream and feeling like no one is hearing me. Watching childhood role models crumble into the gender woo is so painful. JB was so brave and did so much to normalise female biology.

I really hope this becomes a period of time that people look back on and wonder how on earth we allowed these men to swan about with us in their thrall as they created a fictional madness.

I don't buy this. Judy has agency, she's in charge of her faculties. She has chosen to participate. Yes she may have been told to do it, but she could have refused. What harm would any threatened cancellation do her at this stage? They can't pull the film or not credit her...so she could absolutely have chosen not to speak with Dylan.

SpicyMoth · 12/05/2023 23:33

I haven't read the book you mentioned, I'm a bit young for it I think - but from what you've described of it... Good god.

I got my period at age nine.
It was extremely heavy and painful to the point of vomiting.
This is not something someone who is born male will ever be able to understand or experience, no matter how constipated they may be or how many tears they force out whilst grinning to themselves & hunching over.
It's. Not. The. Same.

CampervanKween · 12/05/2023 23:41

When we left primary school we got to choose a leavers book to be presented with. I chose this book. It meant a lot to me.

Won't be going to see the film after this. I'm so angry with the cowards atm. Et tu, Judy?

MouseMinge · 12/05/2023 23:46

I think she was pushed. She might be safe but what about the people involved with the film? She'll have been told that the film will not do well unless she panders and guilt-tripped into it because what about the actors and the studio and ... I can't believe that the same woman who stuck up for JKR just recently has done a complete about turn and with Mulvaney of all people. That interview is grotesque.

Agreed. She's absolutely let women and girls down here. Shame on JB. What a massive disappointment.

Radiodread · 12/05/2023 23:53

Oh no. That's awful :( she's gone way down in my estimation and she was so important to me as a tween and teen. JKR is still a frickin hero though so all is not lost.

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 12/05/2023 23:54

Its an old book, written in the early 70s and from what i remember, about a girl keen to start her period because all of her friends are starting theirs.

I loved blumes books at that age, because they seemed very real and honest. She was someone who could articulate lots of feelings i had that were extremely personal and private. As a women, i dont like the idea of men being over this topic, and treating it as a joke, at best. And assuming they have a right to be involved.

MindIfISlytherin · 12/05/2023 23:55

Ugh I'm by no means anti-trans and actually have some very good friends who happen to be trans, but I absolutely CANNOT stand Dylan Mulvaney and his constant undermining of the biological female experience 😡 YADNBU

SD1978 · 12/05/2023 23:57

Piss off. She wasn't 'forced' to back down and talk to Dylan, obviously it was requested by publishers to try and keep the movie on track.... I also really appreciated this book, and I'm much more likely to now boycott the movie after asking a trans woman what it's like going through puberty systems.......... no time for this shit. Women, young girls go through this. Not men. It's time to stop pretending and stop encouraging this stupid and infantile behaviour.

piedbeauty · 12/05/2023 23:57

Ingenieur · 12/05/2023 22:29

Judy came out in wholehearted support of JKR a few months back, then overnight was forced to give a humiliating retraction presumably at the request of the producers of the movie.

I wonder if this is part of the damage limitation from that...

Just what I was going to say

It's all shit.

Jl2014 · 13/05/2023 00:00

Disgusting and so disappointing. Misogyny knows no bounds.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 13/05/2023 00:09

I guess the angle is something like...DM is asking questions of a woman famous for her understanding of and portrayl of female puberty to understand the girl hood DM should have had so DM can be more complete in DMself as a woman.

Underlying which is of course that whole "being a woman is nothing to do with having a female body but at the same time we TW absolutely have to be where the female bodied people are, and we have to be allowed to cosplay that we have their bodies without anyone pointing out that actually no we don't, which means anything they need because of their bodies, or because of how society frames those bodies, we have to have too even though we haven't actually got the same body at all but it's not about bodies why are TERFs obsessed with genitals??" bundle of incoherent contradictions at the heart of gender ideology.

ohnonowwhat · 13/05/2023 00:54

I'm not going to watch the interview as I don't want to encourage all this nonsense by adding to the views, is he really hunching over and pretending to have a period or saying he thinks he's going to grow breasts like a pubescent girl? Wonder what would happen if real women started talking 'their' trans experience in negative, discriminatory and patronising speeches; after all if they can chatter on about shit they know nothing about so can we surely.
