Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

'Vogel's statements about gender identity have special protection under section 100 of the constitution as political statements.”
“Most statements that Vogels has made, directly or indirectly, in the debate about gender identity, must be considered factual,” according to the judgment. “The court nevertheless finds it clear that the statements made by Vogels on Twitter will, in principle, be well within the framework of freedom of expression. The court does not find that the statements made by Vogels on Twitter are transphobic."'

This is great.

RealityFan · 10/05/2023 15:59

I'm just drinking my cuppa, and raise it to Rianne.

This is now a zero sum game, any compromise that could have been reached is long gone. Now it's a long sequence of court cases to set the boundaries of the law, and women's rights.

No quarter must be given.

ArabeIIaScott · 10/05/2023 16:01

It is great news. This is where we dig in and fight back, absolutely.

Bon courage to women fighting, everywhere.

Great news.
These cases also bring welcome publicity and sunlight, and help others feel a little braver.

Just sticking some other threads/articles on here.

There's very little reporting in the news on this story, unfortunately.

Older article from Reduxx:

Recent thread, with links to tweets from court case:

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4773184-rianne-vogels-case-for-unfair-dismissal-in-norway-equivalent-to-maya

And this article mentions the employers may appeal:

https://cne.news/article/3050-norwegian-wins-court-case-about-gender-tweet

'Lawyer Trine Lise Fromreide, who defended Papillon, said that they definitely consider an appeal. "- We see that the judgment does not mention important parts of the evidence as to why Papillon has given employees the opportunity to change their activity. In addition, we do not agree on the labour law assessments that emerge from the judgment on this point", she tells BT.'

NORWAY: Woman Fired for Criticizing Medical Transitioning of Youth Takes Her Former Employers To Court - Reduxx

A woman in Norway has taken her employer to court after she was dismissed in apparent retaliation for statements she made on social media criticizing the practice of medically “transitioning” young women. Rianne Vogels is suing her employer, Papillon,...

Interesting though that the employer is doubling down, saying they want to appeal. For all intents and purposes they put up a fight, paid very little compensation. Despite all this that the court said the claimant's comments were (mostly) factual and also falling under freedom of expression. They are basically saying they want to control what their employees get to say.

Phew. I've been avoiding reading up on this as I can't hold my breath for that long.

'Papillon is a social impact organization that works to ease the transition of foreign women in Norway'

'the Papillon Bergen team were deservedly awarded the Jentepris 2019, from Plan International, to recognize and applaud the work they do to elevate the lives and social integration of young minority women in the Bergen area.'

'Papillon is a place where our participants can come and feel free to talk about whatever they want. We provide a judgement free community where people feel accepted as they are, so that they may thrive. Our target group are young women with immigrant background, from 16 to 30 years old. '

Can't seem to open Papillon's website.

Skol Rianne !

Hope that's right.

bobbicunliffe · 18/05/2023 07:06

It's a shame it's probably going to destroy an organisation doing important work to get minoritised women into the job market and more involved with the community.
Like Forstater, the case showed how messed up the gender stuff is for people who are just doing their job. If your job is to ask questions/be aware of safeguarding/create space for women/what have you, and gender stuff is this pervasive, you inevitably hit a wall. Rianne asking whether it's good to uncritically tell young adults about the gender clinic if they are distressed, is her doing her job.

Slothtoes · 18/05/2023 09:35

Thank you Rianne!
I’m sure these legal cases are horrendous when you are at the heart of them, so I hope that Rianne knows that she deserves massive congratulations and thanks, on behalf of all the many women who this judgement will help to live their lives a bit more freely. Glitterball
