I'm not even going to link to the web site that calls itself Lesbian Visibility week as apart from looking like a corporate rip off, how it describes itself means that is celebrating everyone as under their definition anyone can be a lesbian (ie non binary people)

And of course has all the usual suspects promoting it.

Please add anything old or new or a memory that celebrates biological women who are sexually attracted to biological women.

ggnnnrrrrrr
I have made the mistake of googling "Lesbian Visibility Week Sheffield" and got the linkedin page for something called Sheffield PLAN. This "organisation" apparently has just 1 employee, who is a "3rd year digital media and society student" somaybe what's below is only to be expected; but oh. oh. oh. words fail me.

Grit your teeth if you want to read on, or scroll on if you don't have an NHS dentist to mend the resultant damage!

✨️Today marks the start of Lesbian Visibility Week – a week to celebrate ALL lesbians, whether trans, cis, masc, femme, old or young! Despite being the first letter in LGBTQ+, lesbians have often been underrepresented in media and history. That is the reason this visibility week is so important!
❗️Lesbians tend to be viewed as either hypersexual or non-sexual. This is due to misrepresentation: historically lesbian relationships were written off friends and modern lesbians are written off as a porn category, performing for men (with the term ‘lesbian’ being the most popular search on pornhub in 2022).
⚠️ It is important to educate yourself, as well as others, on lesbian relationships and how they are normal loving relationships. Though this is not to say that these relationships are perfect – a mistake many straight ‘allies’ make; lesbian relationships are complex and can be filled with problems. Society has, in a valiant effort to be more accepting, completely idealised the idea of being a lesbian, so much so that straight women claim, “I wish I was a lesbian!” or “Unfortunately, I am straight :(“. This is not the allyship people like to think it is. ❗️Being a lesbian is complicated and does not guarantee you a perfect relationship.
❗️ Sheffield PLAN wrote an article on lesbian history, which also discusses modern problems, for Queer History Month, so feel free to read that and learn as much as I did writing it!
👉 For allies: Use this week to further understand lesbians and help learn to become a good ally!
💜 For lesbians: Enjoy this week and do not feel the need to burden yourself with explaining your identity, unless you want to!

But I'm sorry. This doesn't celebrate lesbians at all, does it?

Instead I'll give a shout out to the tiny handful of "out" women who I knew at uni 40+ years ago (and whose ranks I was far too scared to outwardly join!). In a time when to be lesbian was to be routinely tarred with the same brush as Viz's Millie Tant, they didn't give a shit.

trans sisters? you mean blokes then.

No, I mean trans women. This lesbian doesn’t appreciate your sentiment.

you must be confusing me with someone that gives a flying fuck about what you think. meanwhile, what meaningful distinction can you show between trans women and blokes? saying women are women would be a fatuous tautology, so the difference between women and trans women must be, what, exactly? Unless you really think the magic of words turns bollocks into cunts, but you are surely not so fucking mental as to believe that, are you?

Right on Sister!
Kick the penis-havers to the kerb!

This came up on my facebook feed from Lesbians Greens who I haven't heard off and would assume the Greens would want disbanded for not being inclusive.

Any how they are sharing this for Lesbian Visibility Week.

Thanks for taking one for the team!

What total anti lesbian nonsense.

And yes although not a university I remember joining women's groups and a bit slowly realised what a vital element lesbians were in keeping groups going and starting new projects.

I long and hard for women to be women. And to live life as they chose. I am not a lesbian but I am totally upset at women's spaces being invaded.

Namerchangee · 24/04/2024 02:01

Not a lesbian but absolutely standing in solidarity.

May be hard to read, but it came up on my facebook feed so thought I would share.

Urmm - @IwantToRetire - I hope you're not saying that I'm talking "total antilesbian nonsense"? Could you explain why you think that, if that is the case?

Or were you referring to the quote that I copied from the PLAN website? In which case I apologise - and agree!

No I think I was saying or meaning to say in taking one for the team being brave enough to face the onslaught of genderism effectivelly erasing lesbianism.

What total anti lesbian nonsense. Meaning the quotes you gave us. Smile

I always am sad I wasn’t old enough to go along to Greenham, I know it wasn’t meant to be fun, but I would’ve loved the female strength and energy and community so much.

Joanna Cherry : “Good morning #Lesbians. Today I’m speaking in the UK Parliament’s #LesbianVisibilityWeek debate. I’ll be reminding everyone that lesbians are same sex attracted women, that we don’t have penises & that we should not be force teamed with other identities.”

(She says the debate will start at 11:30, perhaps a bit earlier.)

Does anyone have the link to Parliament TV for the Lesbian Visibility debate. I tried searching and nothing comes up. Or has it not started?

In the meantime here is the stunninly informative paper that has been distributed for this debate.
