This is the case where Mermaids challenged the Charity Commission's decision to give charitable status to the LGBA.

Don't have any more detail at the moment, but thought you'd all be interested. It's been a four month wait already.

Stonewall are currently complaining that there's no legislation on "conversion therapy":

Of course Mermaids didn't have standing, they don't have legs. Which makes shooting themselves in the foot quite an achievement 🤔

Gags don’t get better than this. This will not be topped. Chapeau

Just heard The World at One's interview with Kate on this - Sarah Montague says that trans people are 'treated very harshly'.

Odd, when just this week a trans sex offender was spared a jail sentence that 'would normally attract immediate custody.'

Exactly. Journalists should be challenged and asked for evidence every time they make these statements.

Yes, was just about to post about that. The BBC trying to do their usual 'balanced' interviewing, but you get the distinct feeling that the interviewer genuinely doesn't grasp the isue at all - in anything other than a hands off, very detached and disniterested way.

Earleier on a segment was read out by the 'LGBT and Identity correspondent'

Thank you, @RealityFan . That makes good sense to me.

Well, we're sensible people. Eminently, even.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 06/07/2023 13:58

Well, quite.

In case pictures don't load: that was from the Mermaid's statement on the ruling which included this gem
"What does this mean for Mermaids?
This decision has no reflection on Mermaids, the work we do or the people that we exist for. We will continue to focus on providing the highest quality support to trans, non-binary and gender diverse children and young people, their families and the important people in their lives, and to making the world a better place to grow up trans."

How about helping to create an environment in which gender non conforming children can express themselves without having to reject their body.

Like encouraging parents not to impose rigid stereotyping on their children, and helping parents come to terms with a child with a lesbian or homosexual orientation.

Protecting children from social media influencers who document their transition stories and talk about trans joy and 'euphoria' - whilst showing off their scars.

JKR is taking the piss out of Jolly on Twitter. It's a joy.

This a million times. It always staggers me how reductionist some of the TRAs are. I think that is the right word anyway.

crabbyoldbat · 06/07/2023 14:12

If they did want to appeal, what would be required to give Mermaids (or anyone else) 'standing' in this instance?

Appalonia · 06/07/2023 14:12

There's a Twitter Space on this tonight, should be good!

The unsophisticated might think Jolyon has had his arse handed to him on a plate, but it's important to remember that losing is on a spectrum, and Jolyon identifies as someone who would have won if only his side weren't trying to exercise legal rights they didn't have. #binary

Such wonderful news! I'm thrilled for LGBA, what a huge relief, and vindication, this must be for them.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 06/07/2023 14:24

gosh, are Mermaids and the Good Law Project not in charge of the Charity Commission? Who knew

fantastic to see the right result. I'm very interested in what happens about costs

Mermaids profoundly disagrees with the Commission’s Decision emotionally

I do hope there are enough emotional support dogs to go around. Thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

RealityFan · 06/07/2023 14:41

Maybe Mermaids had no "standing", because like all other groups of virtual toddlers, they are still falling on their arses, wailing away for their mums (sorry, non-dads).

You know, the Infants Institute, the Pre-School Praxis, the Kindergarten Kreatives.

Anyway, how do you "stand" on a fishy tail? I've seen many a supermodel in a tight frock stumble over like Mermaids have here. Just with infinitely more style.

I like the mermaids quote that they spoke up “authentically” for the trans community in court. It’s an odd phrase to use isn’t it, unless it was an indication that they have sometimes been a little less than “authentic” in what they say when not in court.
