The old Vic loos

Has anyone been since all the loos went anyone goes anywhere?
Like what would happen if someone was to print out a ladies/ gents sign and happen to stick it on the doors to the loos. Theoretically speaking

I think there are female only loos top floor . They had a massive queue when I was there at Xmas!

Well I imagine you'd be asked to leave, for one thing.

No one would know who put stickers up, plus stickers by design come off, so no damage done.

Go for it OP

PermanentTemporary · 05/04/2023 09:41

I think stickers would be a bit daft. Ring up and ask them about their toilet provision, and if you don't like the answer, don't go. If you go and the queue is awful, complain in writing. Or just... go and use the mixed sex toilets.

Astralitzia · 05/04/2023 10:28

Well I presume there is a) CCTV and b) large numbers of people around, so OPs unlikely to get away with it without being noticed.

ValancyRedfern · 05/04/2023 10:41

I was at a performance of Sylvia where the audience was about 80% female. Queue all the way down the stairs for the toilets 'without urinals', no-one going near the ones with urinals, despite the fact that would have saved us 15 minutes queuing. It's almost like women want single sex toilets...

No there aren't. People treat them as the women's loos but all they say on the door is '8 cubicles'while the other one says '5 urinals, 2 cubicles' (numbers may not be accurate). Guess which one had the queue all the way down the stairs...

Tinysoxx · 05/04/2023 10:47

The irony of Sylvia playing there.

90% certain you cant aim CCTV at toilets or entrances to toilets.

Grammarnut · 05/04/2023 12:14

Keeping an eye on who goes into lavatories might be a good idea - if they are single sex, of course. No cameras inside is the law, I think.

HumphreyCobblers · 05/04/2023 12:19

When I went there the queue for the loo without urinals was so long that me and another woman bravely invaded the loos with urinals. What happened then was lots of women saw us heading in and followed. Then the men were hovering uncertainly outside, clearly not wanting to use the urinals with women in there...

Don't think the system is working for women OR men.

onlytherain · 05/04/2023 12:34

@PermanentTemporary For some women and girls it is not a case of "not liking". They cannot use mixed sex toilets, because it is too anxiety provoking for them.

Rightsraptor · 05/04/2023 12:47

I think that's what our strategy will have to be, @HumphreyCobblers . Battle-hardened crones like me will just have to use the cubicles + urinals loos and hope the men made uncomfortable by us might channel their feelings and complain to management .

Tinysoxx · 05/04/2023 14:24

My Dd wouldn’t be safe as she’s had seizures and I need to have an idea that she’s ok (toilet door gap). From what I can see the doors go down to the floor.

RudsyFarmer · 05/04/2023 14:29

God I couldn’t think of anything worse than using the sane toilets as men using urinals. What a stupid fucking policy. I’d rather take a piss in a bottle.

Tinysoxx · 05/04/2023 17:57

Out of interest I just phoned up the company that did the Old Vic toilets. They open inward and are full height. So anyone collapsed behind them wouldn’t be seen and even it you could open the door from the outside (there is a mechanism but you have to know what you are doing) then someone collapsed on the inside would prevent you opening the door. Strokes/fainting/concussion/epilepsy/head injuries/medication (legal and illegal) ought to be considered in risk assessments in public places. Where do you go when you feel ill?
These toilets discriminate against those people with medical conditions and disabilities that need a degree of visibility and accessibility to be safe.

I find this so off putting I haven't gone to any shows for ages, just feels like my world is shrinking Angry

SleekMamma · 05/04/2023 20:59

Well I just asked an usher. And it's so inclusive now, anyone can go anywhere. But why I would want to go into a urinal is a bit beyond me. Apparently that is just fine.
And they did ask the customers and we all agreed. Yeah right love.

And I can hear women behind me in the audience moaning about the ridiculous toilets

This is crying out for a mass takeover by brave women with she-wees at the urinals. If the men complain they might actually do something about it. Where are the Man Friday crew when you need them? (I know they took a step back from direct action, but they were great.)

SleekMamma · 05/04/2023 22:36

Well you know what I gave it a go.
Massive queue for (what was) the ladies. One woman in front of me. Also obviously waiting for a cubicle.
Oh the men were NOT happy. I did not want to see them pee. And they certainly did not want us in there.
I did my hair and makeup as usual in the mirror. Very clean loos I have to say.

So I guess I was a 1 woman man Friday?

Very odd that they would want that.
Also odd that that it hasn't occurred to them that the way to get convenient provision of ladies' loos is to boycott those establishments which don't provide them. Doubtless theatre management have been laughing their heads off at the thought of sending women away upstairs to queue for ages (serves the girls right for complaining about sharing with men) but they would be laughing on the other side of their faces if they were boycotted.
Nothing on this earth could persuade me to take children.into a mixed sex toilet. At Christmas time women could bankrupt theatres by not taking the family to the panto
if the trip includes a visit round the men's urinals or an ascent to the rafters to find a ladies.

Stopsnowing · 24/10/2023 05:43

It is for this reason that I no longer go
to the old vic. What do they do with school groups?

Same here. One upside to it is that not going to the theatre makes life less costly and I'm actually enjoying staying in. As I refuse to share toilets, changing rooms etc with men I'm guessing things will be this way for some time. So be it, gives me more time for reading.

MishyJDI · 24/10/2023 09:41

Quite frankly theatre provision of toilets for women are a disgrace. Anything that opens up more space I am supportive of. Presumably the urinals are screened off and one doesnt have to walk by men standing. Otherwise we may need a "she-wee" or whatever it is called. lols
