No nudity in changing rooms or no penises in the ladies?

howmanybicycles · 31/03/2023 10:39

I've just seen this news article:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-65133860

It's about a woman who was told off for being naked in the ladies changing rooms. I think she was an actual woman. Does anyone else think that policies like this are needed only because some TW feel entitled to not only be in the women's but to flash their male tackle at the women and children who just want to change in peace?

What is no nudity protecting children from?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 31/03/2023 10:42

I think if a changing room wants to enforce a no nudity policy then it should provide adequate cubicles for women to use to change in. Saying they should change under towels in a communal space is fucking ridiculous.

And I'd always advocate for a no men in the female changing rooms, whether they like to think they are a woman or not. And regardless of cubicles/nudity policies.

Victim blaming seems to be a specialty of the TRA brigade.

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/03/2023 10:44

I’m a woman. I don’t particularly want to see anyone naked in a changing room. Why can’t people use cubicles?

FrancescaContini · 31/03/2023 10:44

So women are having to modify their behaviour in their OWN changing rooms to accommodate MEN?

The men should fuck off to their own changing rooms.

Seeing naked entitled males in ladies changing rooms. It's not just seeing a male body, it's seeing the body of a male who feels entitled to stomp all over other's boundaries in the name of self actualisation, i.e. the more dangerous males. To be clear, I am not saying all TW are more dangerous, just those who don't give a shit about women's rights.

I don't know that is the reason, I'm just wondering what lead to this change.

From the sounds of it I don't think there ARE cubicles. So its a bit like saying "have a shower but don't get the floor wet"

Whichnumbers · 31/03/2023 10:49

Idon’t particularly want to see anyone naked in a changing room.

you don’t have to look, stand with your face to the lockers & avert your gaze downwards

Every public space I use has cubicles. Wouldn’t use one that didn’t. Thank goodness! Remember the open changing rooms in clothes shops as a teen. Awful. Each to their own, though.

howmanybicycles · 31/03/2023 10:50

Not everyone has enough choice or pools etc. to only go to places with cubicles so whilst some people might be happy to only use those which do, it's clearly not a solution.

There aren't always enough cubicles. At my local Bannatynes it's mostly open plan changing with about 3 cubicles. If all the cubicles are occupied I'll just get changed at the benches, I'm not precious about other females seeing me naked briefly, it's not like I'm parading around and going to use the hairdryers naked (which I've seen someone do on one occasion and was a bit WTF).

Seeing normal women’s bodies in changing rooms and the range of difference was enormously helpful to me as an adolescent. It acted as a counterbalance to all the airbrushed sylph-like waifs in magazines and on TV. What exactly is the problem here?

Beamur · 31/03/2023 11:01

I've been following the rule changes at the (very lovely) Turkish Baths in Harrogate.
They used to run sessions that allowed people to be naked in the spa (single sex).
Consulted on changes to change the single sex sessions (very unpopular) in the guise of inclusion..
They've now done away completely with the naked sessions and have very clear rules around appropriate clothing.
I don't know the details but I think that the clothing rules were brought in because of inappropriate behaviour.
It seems to be happening in these kinds of places especially - shared/intimate places where undress is happening, the well established social rules are being flouted which results in more Draconian rules and loss of freedom's for all.

Kerfuffler · 31/03/2023 11:12

Do they still have single sex sessions at all, @Beamur ?

Chersfrozenface · 31/03/2023 11:15

The story runs "..the club says its policy is designed to protect children, and they had received complaints about nudity." The CEO says that the club "received complaints from some junior members about being intimidated and uncomfortable."

The CEO also points out that a third of the members under 14.

The rule only came in 3 months previously.

I wonder what happened before then to spark complaints, which presumably hadn't been received in the however many years prior to that.

It is possible, if Nada Pantle actually is a woman (and there is no way of knowing what sex a person actually is from coverage in the Australian media) that she is not aware of any events or behaviour that have given rise to complaints.

She was disciplined because she had ignored the rule about no nudity.

I totally agree with this. I'm opposed to men in women's changing rooms but seeing the full range of women's bodies is important to young girls, IMO.

Looking at their website it looks like they do and they are called single sex as well. No sneaky gender in there.

Well I'm wondering if it might be that pseudo inclusion has lead to men being in the ladies. Yes seeing women's bodies can be helpful. Seeing mens where they are purported not to be allowed is not. Or are you arguing for fully open changing rooms?

We all have a body and this amount of horror at the thought of seeing one is, in my opinion, ridiculous. I grew up in a household where seeing my family (including my dad) naked was no big deal. When I had my own children we were members of a naturist club and would spend weekends in summer there. They grew up seeing the naked body in all its shapes and forms, all ages and by no means all "beautiful". Consequently, they have grown up with no "body hang ups" and are confident in their own appearance. They have not grown up in a situation where the only naked bodies they saw were in air brushed or porn photos, which would make then lack confidence in their own normal bodies!

Great! As long as sex means sex and we know that people never change sex. Meaningless bumf if we pretend otherwise.

It's the 'men get scary when you try to talk to them about women having needs too, so all loos are gender neutral so we don't have to deal with them' solution.

It fucks over women, while protecting staff from having to set boundaries with potentially large, angry, unstable men.

That would be lovely in an ideal world.

Unfortunately it's not an ideal world. It's a patriarchal and increasingly pornified one.

An awful lot of men in particular have nefarious reasons for wanting to be in places where women and children are naked.

But this is an argument for fully open changing rooms, not an argument for men I the ladies. Personally I'd prefer fully open to TW in the ladies. Because TW in the ladies means letting in some of the least respectful men (i recognise that respectful TW will not violate women's boundaries by using their facilities).

I have no problem with fully open changing rooms, but accept that most people have.
