Majorly outed myself at work

I work for the nhs. Yesterday we were handed some laminated shite about gender identity information.
The fella handed it to me saying it had come from the inclusion &diversity dude. He's also LBGT+ lead and my head of nursing.

I showed the laminate to some gay members of my team. They were disgusted by the wording.

So I emailed the heads of nursing, stating the bloody obvious.
I had backing off my manager who didn't want the laminate on the staff room wall.

So pressed send. Had radio silence back.

I'm now getting my ducks in a row, maybe not needed , but just in case.

I had also sent them a foi regarding there partnership with stonewall.

It's either going to be how do we shut her up or how do we distance ourselves from it.

Either way big black mark against my name.

Evening thought I should up date you all on my mischievous actions.
So still waiting for a meeting with the head of nursing.
This was around the same time I got knocked back for an award at work, people thought suspicious.
I attended a teams meeting regarding how to support trans and non binary folk.
According to the head of HR I was brave for coming out as gender critical. Was asked how many transgender dementia patients I've looked after. None, I replied. Wrong generation, our patients may not have capacity but they know what a woman is.
I done various other campaigns and I'm off to London at the weekend to see the coronation but also to speak at LWS
I have spent the last week researching and writing it.

Thanks for the update. Have a fab weekend.

Fairislefandango · 02/05/2023 19:18

how not to offend people by treating them as gender neutral.

I see this as a sure fire way of offending 99% of people.

Yes, 100% this. It drives me nuts! If you want to 'misgender' the smallest number of people, the logical thing to do is refer to them as the sex they look like they are, because the vast majority of female look female and the vast majority of male people look male!

I’m loving your lively posts OP. Best of luck and keep asking the necessary questions. The tide IS turning…..

Christ on an actual bike

I know this post is from weeks ago, but that cringeworthy list of wanker than woke lobbyists at the end is painful.

I wonder if all those groups are being given NHS money for insisting you put folks with bollocks on women’s wards and offend men by refusing to treat them if they won’t tell you if they’re pregnant or not.

PriOn1 · 02/05/2023 19:39

Drat! The quoted post didn’t include the screenshot. Here’s that list…

Will be amusing at speakers corner as my mum (70) is coming with me.
She has stuck stuff to the lamp post outside her house 'to give the dog walkers something to read'

I'm hoping my union Jill T-shirt arrives before I leave Friday that I ordered.

Got lots of stickers from birdie

Elaine Miller in various YouTube discussions talks about transgender dementia patients vs homosexual dementia patients and it is truly heartbreaking. She particularly points to the difference between legally mandated care (having to use new name) vs patient centred care (using birth names because the whole trans decision has been lost in the mists except that it’s illegal to do so). Never such a problem with gay patients (always homosexual).

She did submit a report to the House of Lords followed up by a presentation but I don’t know the particular points she focussed on.

I don't think you've majorly outed yourself. My line to mgt would be that you are feeding back the views of a number of staff who came to you individually, too scared to speak up themselves because of the toxicity around the subject and that that in itself is an additional concern.

Well done though, someone needs to be saying it.

This is good advice.

cheshirecatssmile · 15/05/2023 12:04

Did my speech yesterday at LWS
Had so many people come to me afterwards to say well done and that they hadn't a clue this was going on in the nhs.
Best bit. Work management can't do a thing as I was just quoting their own policies which are on line for all to see.
We need to push back now regarding annex b.

OP posts:
AmaryllisNightAndDay · 15/05/2023 12:46

What can the rest of us (not NHS workers) do about Annex B? I read Delivering Same-Sex Accommodation and especially Annex B, after the patient rape case that Baroness Nicolson presented to the House of Lords where the police got told there couldn't have been a rape by another patient because - ta-dah! - all the patients were women.

And here is one among many jaw-droppers from Annex B: "Non-binary individuals, who do not identify as being male or female, should also be asked discreetly about their preferences, and allocated to the male or female ward according to their choice. "

You can tell it was written by someone different from the rest of the document, and that no-one had tried to check if it made sense or was balanced. Or was even correct. the document refers to the "Equalities Act" not the Equality Act . The contradiction between 1.3 and Annex B is barely discussed anywhere, though there is a bit of handwaving right at the end in the FAQs:

"18. How can I ensure that the wishes of all patients in an area or on a ward/bay are considered when accommodating the wishes of a small number of those patients?

A) Staff should remember that, under the Equalities Act and the Public Sector Equality Duty, it is a legal requirement to ensure that trans people are not discriminated against. This guidance clearly states that trans and non-binary people should be accommodated in line with their stated gender identity. In all cases staff should communicate to all patients and or their carers the situation that arises, ensuring sensitivity to all views and acting accordingly to protect the privacy and dignity of all patients. Where the situation, for example, relates to trans patients, staff should do everything they can to respond to the wishes of all patients, while still protecting the dignity and legal rights of the trans person. There may be some circumstances where it is lawful to provide a different service or exclude a trans person from a single sex ward of their preferred gender but only if this is a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim. Any decision to do this must therefore be made on a case-by-case basis, and based on:
• an objective and evidence-based assessment of the circumstances and relevant information
• respecting the rights and needs of the trans person and the detriment to them if they are denied access and balancing that against the needs of other service users and any detriment to them if the trans person is admitted.

(My italics, and I just wondererd where the rights of other service users had disappeared to.)

What can the rest of us do? We are all potental hospital patients, after all.

Pudmyboy · 15/05/2023 13:41

A new gay colleague at my work asked me directly if I was a Terf. I now wear a little suffragette pin on my top, today I've a new laynard for my ID, Nobody has commented on it yet, It says Woman Adult Human Female at the bottom, but you'd really have to bend down to my belly button to read it. I purchased from the Kellie JK website along with some lovely stickers. And if anyone says anything I'm just going to say it's the suffragtte colours. And the woman adult Human Female is what I am. So I can't be caught for Terf crimes.

caniexchangesil · 15/05/2023 19:47

I'm just looking at annexe b - what an appalling sack of shite.

"If, on admission, it is impossible to ask the view of the person because he or she is unconscious or incapacitated then, in the first instance, inferences should be drawn from presentation and mode of dress. No investigation as to the genital sex of the person should be undertaken unless this is specifically necessary to carry out treatment" - what does this even mean? So of unconscious, short-haired and wearing no make up, the person - even if obviously female - should be accommodated in the men's ward?

"This approach may be varied under special circumstances where, for instance, the treatment is sex-specific and necessitates a trans person being placed in an otherwise opposite gender ward. Such departures should be proportionate to achieving a ‘legitimate aim’, for instance, a safe nursing environment. This may arise, for instance, when a trans man is having a hysterectomy in a hospital, or hospital ward that is designated specifically for women, and no side room is available." - absolutely illogical. If males can be accommodated in 'single sex' women's spaces, then why can't females who've had a hysterectomy be on the male ward? What does 'sex-specific' treatment even mean when you've re-interpreted sex to mean 'whatever men need it to mean to be properly serviced by women?

"Non-binary individuals, who do not identify as being male or female, should also be asked discreetly about their preferences, and allocated to the male or female ward according to their choice" - is the assumption that everyone not declaring themselves as trans or non-binary actually does identify as male or female? Have they no regard for evidence bases now? Bit worrying in the NHS

Awful, awful, poorly thought through misogynistic rubbish.
