Apologies to those not on Twitter. As Ginner says, worth watching to the end:

Commenting so I remember to watch later

For those who don't know who Peta Credlin is, she was Tony Abbott's chief of staff. Someone could correct me, but I believe that her husband was high up in the national level of the Liberal Party, maybe he still is.

She is a lawyer as well with a focus on constitutional law.

I don't necessarily agree with her on some issues, but on this one she has been very solid and very clear.

She was very clear in interviewing the Victorian opposition leader about this and has done a segment on the 'evidence' that he supposedly used.

Codlingmoths · 27/03/2023 14:39

Mmhmm I don’t have much respect for peta credlin but you don’t need to listen to her to know this was a leadership failure. Some sympathy for pesutto, but he screwed up. For context the libs in australia aka Tories have been going down the toilet and are pretty much unelectable in most states. In wa they barely exist except as a punchline, in Victoria no one scores points off the labour premier daniel andrews, in nsw the swings against them in a number of seats as they lost govt on the weekend were eye popping double digits, and the leader of the federal party is too unpopular to have risked making things worse by supporting the state elections by campaigning! So pesutto is a moderate /moderate seeming lib trying to build a credible party. But now he just seems for one weak and for two like he’s forgotten what liberal values are.

FOJN · 27/03/2023 14:46

I agree with this tweet by Rachel Wong. I do hope the presenter is right a Pesutto is gone by Christmas, what a disgraceful way to treat a colleague.

From someone who has worked with Pesutto, he is very 'left leaning' and not a moderate.

Oh, I know fuck all about Australian politics but that sounds like a game changer. Can she, would she appeal against a suspension? Has she been suspended? If so, on what ground? Defamatory? I hope she sues.

Sidaway · 27/03/2023 14:58

Thanks all for the insight on Australian politics, a subject not very familiar to me.

But it's all sunlight isn't it, which is good?

Helleofabore

I saw somewhere that Dan Andrews is under pressure due to allegations of corruption and that Moira Deemings was just away of him deflecting attention and putting Pesutto in the spotlight, do you know anything about that?

Helleofabore · 27/03/2023 15:07

I don't know about it FOJN. I have heard the rumours though, just like many people.

Helleofabore · 27/03/2023 15:08

I have to confess, even if I was living back in Australia, I was not very interested in state politics outside of NSW & QLD.

Helleofabore · 27/03/2023 15:07

I suppose it will leak out sooner or later if there is any truth to it.

It's a terrible state of affairs when you don't feel you can trust anything you read and wonder what is true and what is an attempt to smear a political opponent.

Boiledbeetle · 27/03/2023 15:42

Sorry I've not got a clue about this. What exactly was she suspended for? I know she spoke at one of the rallies was she not allowed to do that? Or was it what she said at the rally?

IwantToRetire · 27/03/2023 16:54

Some of the local papers are suggesting the suspension was only because she accepted "errors" eg:

She condemned the past use by Keen-Minshull of a Barbie wearing a Nazi uniform on her social media as a “poor distasteful joke”, and also of Jones using a “Nazi analogy”. But otherwise, Deeming said allegations either woman was linked to far-right extremism were false.

“I admit that with the benefit of hindsight of what has occurred, that my participation may have been an error of judgment that resulted in unneeded scrutiny,” she said.

“When I attended the event I made sure I did not speak as a Liberal, in fact I did not even mention I was a Liberal.

(Off topic but I have the way the forum board has again been meddled with so that now huge immages appear based on last link posted. It really interrupts the flow of conversation - IMO. You can get rid of the oversize images by clicking on the dustbin)

Here's a YouTube version:

Watching these series of political disasters piling up, I do wonder how Nicola Sturgeon was not sufficiently instructive.

Nicola Sturgeon’s downfall was barely mentioned in any European mainstream press.
In my country we had not a whisper at all. Which is unusual - at least there is a comment if the news is about a head of state.
But for Sturgeon: nothing.

Don’t know if it was mentioned in the Americas or in Oceania, or anywhere else for that matter.
I rather suspect not, because it would Open such a can of worms letting the Isla Bryson case out in the public.

It's not really a game changer because as a previous poster said, the Liberal Party are down the toilet anyway.

It's all a bit sad because it's clear that Deeming (a conservative) stands for women's rights whereas the ruling Labor Party (supposedly progressive) is captured by the TRAs.

Helleofabore · 27/03/2023 17:38

For anyone wishing to read Moira's response, I believe this is it. I have not checked if it is official.

Helleofabore · 27/03/2023 17:43

There has been alot of discussion about CPAC as 'far right'. I find this to be rather bizarre.

From the people that I have seen associated with it, it has people from different political parties. Moira mentions it here in her response":

"CPAC a well-known and reputable organisation which is chaired by Warren Mundine AO, former Australian Labor Party national president"

There is also at least one other past ALP ex-leader who has spoken at one of their conferences.

If that is her official defence it's shocking, the whole case against her was guilt by association. She has felt it necessary to explain allegations made against women she got together with after the event. Apart from attending is there anything about what she actually did which was unacceptable.

Codlingmoths · 27/03/2023 22:21

@Helleofabore how is it possible pesutto is left leaning? I just can’t picture that getting up as leader of the Vic libs. I quite like him and wish him well as I’d like a functioning two party system, although this was a serious misjudgemenT.
to those saying it’s all sunlight , that is really only shining on the chaos in the libs. I see very little gain to women’s rights in the general community from this.

OnlyTheWeedsGrow · 28/03/2023 04:08

All those who publicly condemned and judged Moira, and have left her in fear for her family, friends, her livelihood and herself need to read her speech, realise their role in this witch hunt and abuse, and PUBLICLY apologise to her.

I hope KJK sues for defamation, as that will also support Moira and the truth.

I truly despise these contemptible politicians, media and activists for seeking to viciously destroy a woman for speaking the truth, and wanting basic safety and rights for women and children.

Because within each party there are extremes of view. For instance Chris Minns is being described as a right leaning ALP politician due to his voting record.

And if it is shining light on the chaos in the Liberal party, great. It shows that it is time for them to encourage people with better leadership to come forward or to encourage better potential candidates into the party. Just like the ALP needed to sort itself out after the Rudd debacle. Australia is better with a strong opposition which ever party is in power in my opinion, it means that stronger and clearer laws are passed with better oversight.

NotBadConsidering · 28/03/2023 05:09

Even now Pesutto is piling shit on her. She was asked to condemn certain material which presumably she did because it was the only way to move forward. She was then clear that she did not condemn people: because she wasn’t required to. But Pesutto is claiming she’s already gone back on her commitment even though was never required to condemn people.

I feel hugely sorry for Angie Jones, a left wing feminist whose tweet as part of a conversation pointing out the idiocy of someone’s argument about paedophiles and Nazis is the ammunition here. Jones is being vilified and used to vilify Deeming.

Pesutto can FOTTFSOF.

Codlingmoths · 28/03/2023 12:13

@Helleofabore I wish I felt like that would be the effect of the light. It seems more likely to me that there are no better candidates and instead if pesutto were pushed out it would be a worse leader, and far from attracting better people into the party decent candidates will stay the fuck away from the toxic mess and best case the libs exile in the wilderness with zero say in policy is longer. Worst case they cease to exist.
