Women in Wales silently protest Drakeford's speech

While women were under attack in London and New Zealand in the Cathedral City of St David's Welsh Women carried out a daring silent protest on Saturday. The Welsh government's refusal to listen or meet with women's groups for years is utterly wrong. Glad to see this happen, Drakeford and Welsh Labour can look forward to much more of this over the next few years. #ShesBehindYou!

Brilliantly planned demo !

St David's currently has the first ever women bishop in Welsh history. So it is a very appropriate place for a protest asserting women's right to challenge unquestioned male authority.

Interestingly in attending the Cathedral the protestors trod in the footsteps of the suffragettes - Emmeline Pankhurst, Annie Kenney, Mary Blaythwat and Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence all came to St David's and signed visitors book in 1908 when they were campaigning in a Pembroke byelection against the Liberal candidate because of the Liberals refusal to listen to women's demand for the vote.

Within 20 years of this Liberal dominance of Wales was collapsing in the face of Labour who at that time recognised that women existed and championed their rights. Welsh Labour beware!

Drakeford speech marred by silent protest over women’s safety

A silent protest accompanied the talk given by First Minister Mark Drakeford at the Festival of Ideas in St David’s Cathedral yesterday. A group of women carrying banners, quietly joined the First Minister as he delivered a talk on ‘Wales: the big pict...

The disruptor looked unhinged, but the protesters dealt with it so well. Just picked up their banners and carried on. So dignified, and in my view, in keeping with the setting

More details in another thread seems the pro-gender woman who charged the protest at the end was a lecturer Sara Jones.: www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4772540-welsh-gc-protesters-in-st-davids-cathedral-protest

The local newspaper has more details as well:

No coverage from other Welsh media. Usual cover up.

The thread is not there! Deleted?

Some of those comments under the Western Telegraph article.

St. David's Cathedral is a beautiful place and I'm glad it was a dignified protest.

I've just been re-reading The Strange Death of Liberal England. The once mighty party was destroyed by splits over Home Rule and Women's Suffrage.

Beware , Labour indeed!

  • a good read , author George Dangerfield.

The comments seemed pretty supportive on the whole, with some contributors taking time to write long and thoughtful responses. One guy complained he can no longer get away from short skirts and push up bras, I was actually surprised he wasn't complaining about tw!

Yes,on the whole they were very supportive.

I was just stunned by the ignorance of the woman who had no idea what single sex spaces were.

WelshSerafina · 28/03/2023 23:01

Me too!

Just goes to show female socialisation and a propensity to condemn other women is very deeply rooted in many cases

Well that's a very fair and balanced report. How unusual.

SinnerBoy · 09/04/2023 16:13

Bob Lockinson seems to be a bit unobservant, he didn't notice the audience turning and continuing to clap, as the protesting women filed out.

Da Iawn!

Shelefttheweb · 09/04/2023 16:29

A Mosque would be an interesting one given it would involve the use of single sex spaces.

I am glad it wasn’t during an Easter service though - that would be akin to TRAs protesting on stage at Filia.

Brilliant! I saw on Twitter that the disruptor is a lecturer at Bath Spa

Shameful creature.

So not even living in Wales where Drakeford’s policies impact on the lives of these women?
