Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Denise Fahmy taking Arts Council England to an Employment Tribunal because she has been harassed for being gender critical.

Denise Fahmy queried why an award to the LGB Alliance was withdrawn and then faced harrassment at work.

From her summary:
" some of my colleagues saw fit to circulate a petition to all staff against me and any other 'gender criticals' working at ACE. The petition was hosted for 26 hours on the ACE staff intranet, gaining the attention of 700 staff and signatures from over 100 of them. People signed it, and made comments, citing gender critical people like me and LGB Alliance as parasites, neo nazis, needing to be stamped out ..."

Denise is gardening in the usual place - see "Fighting bias at the top of the Arts Council"

If you're able to help her out by planting or sharing please do. Thank you.

Delighted to have backed this winner. Nice win for AP against a silk too. I hope a sensible compensation offer is now made and Denise does not have to pursue a remedies hearing.

That’s great. Good to see legal cases backing GC women

What is the outcome? Is it compensation? I may have missed it

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/06/2023 14:55

Compensation amounts will be decided at a later remedies hearing.

The important thing is that ACE now have to face the fact that they are not the good guys. A public finding of discrimination against a woke organisation must cause the most enormous cognitive dissonance.

I hope the LGBA pushed them hard on the withdrawn funding now.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 27/06/2023 15:08

I'm glad that they had formal action taken against them for their outrageous treatment of Denise.

I was expecting them to have been given a promotion and a raise, quite frankly.

DizF · 27/06/2023 15:15

Yes this is so true ! And the way they ensured they were LGBTQIA+ inclusive was to have a grant withdrawn from an LGB organisation !

Ameanstreakamilewide · 27/06/2023 15:18

It's as simple as that for TRAs, isn't it?

They only have to say the word 'Trans', or 'Non-binary', or 'ally' and they are like a skeleton key to getting your own way.

AmuseBish · 27/06/2023 15:45

This is great to read. Still shocking to see the (presumably homophobic) accusations slung at LGBA and openly ill-informed yet used as a basis for denying grants.

nothingcomestonothing · 27/06/2023 17:20

"Hatred of others for their differences should not be tolerated.”'

Unless the 'others' are GC women or homosexuals who don't want to be lumped in with trans, then hate away, amirite?

Huge congrats to Denise, and I hope LGBA take ACE to court too.

Boiledbeetle · 27/06/2023 19:22

Good news I see. Congratulations Denise, it should never have ended up in a court room. At some point companies, etc are going to have to realise that having a gender critical view of the world is not illegal.

Wow. Guardian being uncharacteristically sharp, there. I wonder if they scent a change in the air. Meanwhile;

'Fahmy, who said 411 people attended the drop-in session, was the only attender to challenge the view that LGB Alliance was anti-transgender.'

Now that, ladies and gents, is what integrity and courage looks like.

RealityFan · 27/06/2023 20:21

Congrats, Denise. Another shaft of light in a sky that's been way too dark and stormy in the last few years.

Something happened when I clicked that article- the picture didn't load immediately, and the caption came up as text. Something like "Trans activists protest against an LGB Alliance anti-transgender conference at London’s Queen Elizabeth II Centre.". Maybe that's the screenreader text or something, because the caption when I click on it says "Activists protest against an LGB Alliance conference at London’s Queen Elizabeth II Centre.".

Someone used the term anti-transgender and then it got removed. Presumably the point of the article was lost on them?

QueenHippolyta · 27/06/2023 20:30

She's a true heroine!
Inclusion for thee but not for me and any other Lesbians...

That this movement is so homophobic and everyone goes along with it, makes me wonder if all the acceptance I thought gay people had achieved is just fake....

Lol of course they are still attempting to excuse their discriminatory behaviour rather than just go “we screwed up we’ll try and improve”

An ACE spokesperson said: “There was nothing in the judgment to support the accusation of institutional bias. We are reflecting on the judgment which upheld two allegations of harassment in relation to a petition set up by a junior member of staff who no longer works for us, and we note the tribunal’s acknowledgment of steps taken by us to disable the petition and address the incident at the time.”

AmuseBish · 27/06/2023 20:37

It's the alt-text on the Guardian website. I've checked the source code for the page and it says "<img alt="Transgender Action Block protest against the LGB Alliance Anti-transgender conference in Queen Elizabeth II Centre"

Anyone can view it on a computer browser if you right-click the page, 'view source' and do a search for the word 'anti'.

Great news. Well done Denise and team.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 27/06/2023 21:02

this is great news

I wish I could buy Denise a beer / wine / massive box of chocolates/ her choice of gift. It must have been insanely stressful going through this. She's really done a lot for women who recognise reality and are not willing to lie. She has exhibited such bravery and integrity.

The ACE's statement shows that they're not really sorry and it's probably still not a safe place for women, sadly. I wonder how many staff they have who think exactly the same as Denise but are too afraid to say so; there will be lots I expect.

Caughtinlove · 27/06/2023 21:40

So good to hear - one brave woman.

GrabbyGabby · 27/06/2023 22:04

Brava that brave woman. She would have known exactly the can of worms she was opening when she spoke up. She knew she would end up out the door and possibly in court, and she did it anyway. Hats off to her.

eurochick · 27/06/2023 23:34

Dare I think we are another step closer to sanity prevailing?

Thank you to DF, Maya and all those willing to put their heads above the parapet.

drhf · 28/06/2023 00:30

ACE argued during the tribunal that discrimination in the arts against GC women isn’t like other kinds of discrimination, because people who work in the arts are very smart and they sincerely believe that GC opinions are evil, so…

ACE now is like a school kid pretending not to be a bully, but only for as long as the teacher is watching. They show no insight into the criticism of them in this judgement, and they still don’t seem to accept that gender critical views are WORIADS.

The best scenario here for women is probably that ACE appeals and loses again. That might be expensive enough to wake them up. But for Denise’s sake, hopefully ACE will take the loss and leave her in peace.
