He couldn't say what a woman is.

He is a biochemist by training and doesn't believe it's as simple as XX or XY.

He believes that some people are born into the wrong bodies.

He personally doesn't mind who is in the next cubicle, but does accept that some women might not feel equally comfortable.

He believes that the issue with men using female changing rooms is not that men might try to spy on women getting changed, because some women do that too and it's a crime that should be punished regardless of the sex of the person committing it - he clearly thought that was an absolutely unanswerable point, despite conceding he's not aware of any cases of biological women being caught spying on other changing room users.

He's not bothered that I won't be voting him because of his and his ridiculous party's views.

With any luck, you weren’t the only person expressing those views to him today OP!

tedgran · 14/03/2023 17:16

I had this last year, canvasser said he couldn't answer my question. I live in a constituency with a libdem council and my. Spoilt my ballot paper, one of 20 in the borough!

MrsMitford3 · 14/03/2023 17:20

Interesting.

Conservative candidate at my door.

I asked if they thought biological males could say they were female and compete in women's sports and she said "absolutely not" and her daughter was an athlete and she could see the damage being caused.

I wish I'd have asked her to define a woman... next time!

Musomama1 · 14/03/2023 17:22

OP my doorstepping libdem wannabe counsellor knew what a woman was. Although called TW former men.🤔🤔🤔

viques · 14/03/2023 17:24

Oh you are so lucky. I live in a super safe seat, so councillors, and MP candidates, just don’t bother to do door to door. You might once in a blue moon hear someone speaking indistinctly through a loudspeaker as they drive away , but that is it. We quite often don’t even get election pamphlets. I am dying to be doorstopped.

FetchezLaVache · 14/03/2023 17:32

@viques snap! It's a new LD candidate in a Tory stronghold, so obviously a bit of a keen bean. It's the first time I have been doorstopped and I was so excited. I had actually ignored the knock, then when I saw the LD pamphlet on the mat I positively sprinted to the door! I consider myself very lucky too.

Florissant · 14/03/2023 17:43

I asked my Labour MP about transideology and they just spouted the standard Labour line. They're not getting my vote, that's for sure.

DiscoBoots · 14/03/2023 17:51

I got doorstopped by a local Green candidate yesterday.

We discussed local issues then she asked if she might get my vote. I replied that I couldn't vote for the Green party due to their stance on trans issues and the loss of women's rights

She took a deep breath and replied that she wouldn't be whipped to vote a specific way on issues (implied that was Green policy) and told me that she personally was very concerned about these issues and the implications for women, and she wouldn't feel comfortable using the loo with a man next door and certainly didn't want to see any males in women's prisons.

All very sensible and common sense.

I asked her to pass on that this was a huge issue for me and many people I knew and she gave me a clear indication I was not the only person to mention this

ScrollingLeaves · 14/03/2023 17:54

OP, that person’s response to your questions takes some beating in its level of sheer stupidity.

MintJulia · 14/03/2023 17:54

Well, that's the LDs off my list. 🙄 What a bunch of idiots.

The Tories are going to win again, aren't they.

The Tories have been in power too long so too many negative things have been attached to them. Many their own fault, others (like cost of living crisis and pandemic) not but regardless of whether actually managed well or not will still be a negative for them. Despite labours best efforts, they are likely to win. An advantage of being out of power is it is pretty hard for you to do anything wrong and as the party in power does more wrong things the opposition find it harder to counteract that with idiot beliefs and speeches.

That's a lot of words to say that Labour seem to be inelectable.

Yes, but may still win. Unfortunately they will put it down to their ideas being attractive to voters rather than the Tories.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 14/03/2023 18:12

@Shelefttheweb im utterly confused - Labour will win or won’t win?

Shelefttheweb · 14/03/2023 18:12

As a centrist, I think political change is overdue, so ordinarily would be voting labour or Lib Dem next time. But I won’t.

Shelefttheweb · 14/03/2023 18:16

Probably win. But they could still mess up.

MintJulia · 14/03/2023 18:20

@Shelefttheweb I hope there is a change. I really do. The election next year is Labour's to lose.

But they are unfortunately, so stupid, I suspect they may still throw it away.

And I can't bring myself to vote for a party who denies my very identity.

TodayInahurry · 14/03/2023 18:23

MintJulia I will not vote for Labour until they stand up for women, and Starmer says what a woman is.

Shelefttheweb · 14/03/2023 18:29

The worry is they will think people vote for them because of their gender ideology not despite it.

Green parties worldwide typically do not whip their MPs. That's part of the philosophy of the parties which says that MPs should be responsible to the desires of the people they represent.

In practice they have other ways of ensuring they toe the line.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/03/2023 18:55

I live in a super safe Labour seat and in a borough with almost no councillors who aren't Labour so was amazed to have a councillor knock on the door the other day. Nice man. I told him I couldn't vote for Labour as I am very concerned about women's rights and safeguarding of children and other vulnerable people and I feel Labour has lost its way with gender issues. He said he would feed this back. I didn't ask his own views, though, and it could all have been flannel.

Better than the Green chap who canvassed last year to whom I said the same thing. He said he totally supported the party line on gender issues. He looked very disappointed in me Grin but he didn't get my vote. Neither did the WEP woman a couple of years ago who also made sympathetic noises but could provide no substantive reassurance to allay my concerns.

MrGHardy · 14/03/2023 19:11

"He's not bothered that I won't be voting him because of his and his ridiculous party's views."

I think this is very telling and more common with the 'progressives'. Either with me 100% or not at all and if you are not at all you are scum and I don't care.

Signalbox · 14/03/2023 19:21

because some women do that too and it's a crime that should be punished regardless of the sex of the person committing it

Presumably he’s under the misapprehension that crimes like this usually result in a conviction. And “women do it too” is such a load of gaslighting bullshit. The cases of women being abusive in women’s spaces must be miniscule.

WarningToTheCurious · 14/03/2023 19:21

My Lib Dem councillor is very much GC (she made a point of coming round to chat to people and I specifically asked her) and I’m happy to vote for her based on the LD local policies.

But nationally … no way.

howmanybicycles · 14/03/2023 19:22

"He believes that the issue with men using female changing rooms is not that men might try to spy on women getting changed, because some women do that too and it's a crime that should be punished regardless of the sex of the person committing it"

so does he think we should just have unisex changing rooms? If not, why not?
