I just came across it looking for something else. I thought some people here might be interested.

Thanks for the heads up.I've not read any of this series before, can I just jump in with this one or should I start from the beginning?

Igneococcus · 04/03/2023 08:02

I don't know @PelicanWings I'm not really a crime literature reader (though I was looking for Donna Leon's new book), but I'm sure someone else on FWR will know.

Thanks - I haven't read all of them but I did read the first. Might as well snap this up for 99p

whoami24601 · 04/03/2023 08:26

Ooh thanks for that! Off to hunt for my kindle...

fabricstash · 04/03/2023 08:28

Yeah, you can. She always does a bit of history. Having said that, I'm nearing the end of this one, and it's my least favorite of the series. It's 1,000 pages and I've struggled to feel engaged. But 99p....what a bargain.

orangejuggling · 04/03/2023 09:11

Absolute bargain - but I hear that it’s a nightmare to read on a Kindle. A lot of the plot develops through parallel online chats.

I found it quite a slog but it grows on you - the insight into online culture is terrific, and you really feel you are solving the crimes along with Robin and Strike, if that makes sense. You wouldn’t need to read them all but not sure I’d recommend it as an introduction to the series. The Cuckoo’s Calling (the first one) is a great read and very accessible.

Thank you for sharing!!!

Sunnava · 04/03/2023 10:38

Have bought a Kindle copy to bump up her sales and ranking, brave woman

Leafytrees · 04/03/2023 10:40

It's fab!

I don't want to give anything away but highly recommend it if you're looking for a sharp, modern, murder mystery.

IhearyouClemFandango · 04/03/2023 10:41

Ah bugger, I bought it full price the other week. Ah well, I was hooked and on holiday so it was worth it 😁

EnidSinclair · 04/03/2023 10:45

Bought! Thank you OP Flowers

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/03/2023 10:48

Thank you!

There are also a lot of feminist and women-related books on offer for Kindle this month, including Julie Bindel's latest.

Redebs · 04/03/2023 11:21

Looking forward to reading it.
Took me a few minutes to discover Robert Galbraith is JKR 🙄

Yes, you can, but it's worth starting from the beginning and seeing how the characters develop. IBH is also my least favourite, but it's the sort of book I will re-read in chunks, as it's very rich. It's also a bit difficult to read on Kindle, as some pages are inconveniently typeset, though I think they may have dealt with that editing issue.

mum2jakie · 04/03/2023 16:44

Bumping, thank you!

nepeta · 04/03/2023 16:47

I bought all her Strike books on Kindle because I wanted to check if they were transphobic. They are not, and quite fun reads.

Yes, the Ink Black Heart is slightly annoying to read on Kindle, but I soon learned that I didn't have to read the bits at the end of the chapters, i.e., it was clear enough once I got the hang of it.

refreshingseahorse · 04/03/2023 17:00

It's also 99p on Kobo as well!

Rainbowshit · 04/03/2023 17:22

Brilliant thanks!

Why is it that Amazon doesn't let you purchase kindle books via the app though? so irritating.

AngeloMysterioso · 04/03/2023 18:43

I already have the hardback and agree this one is a mare to read in this format but I’ve bought it anyway!

dunBle · 04/03/2023 19:04

@PelicanWings The BBC adaptations of all the books from The Cuckoo's Calling up to and including Troubled Blood are up on iplayer if you want to catch up before you read Ink Black Heart. I've not read the books, but I've enjoyed the adaptations, although if I remember rightly they do lose the occasional subplot, so I wouldn't use your knowledge of them as the basis of any argument against claims of JKR's transphobia in them

I would personally read the others before, part of the fun of the series is following the personal relationships.

Agree this one is the worst of the series so far...it really needed more of a ruthless edit, but I still enjoyed it overall.

I’ve read all of them and there is NO transphobia. Quite the opposite, actually,

dunBle · 04/03/2023 22:39

Oh to be clear, I'm not saying there is, but I remember all the frothing from certain quarters when Troubled Blood came out. I'm just acknowledging that I can't debate that as I've not read the book.
