Equality Act - what next?

The petition to look at this seems sadly to have virtually ground to a halt:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/petitions_noticeboard/4722618-petition-to-update-the-equality-act-thread-2

Government have responded with a dismissive:

'providers are already able to restrict the use of spaces/services on the basis of sex and/or gender reassignment where justified. Further clarification is not necessary.'

What next?

We know that providers, while technically able to exclude males, just do not and will not. Nobody seems to agree on or understand the law fully. Legal experts get in huge tangles arguing about it.

The current situation means women are excluded from many women's spaces, there is no provision for single sex services apart from Beira's Place in Scotland, there are still males in women's prisons, and in hospitals.

What do we do if the government and EHRC won't listen? Whatever the law says, this situation is untenable.

It looks like today will be the day. I am staggered at how fast the last 10k of signatures have gone.

Even if the Government brushes off the debate, it's going to be a talking point before the May elections.

Lurker here who was reading this thread feeling despondent but full of admiration for the people do actual activism here, then watching the about turn as soon as JK tweeted. Amazing stuff to follow.

I am one slightly cowardly woman but I am here to write letters and do other quiet behind closed doors activism, so please keep putting out ideas about what people like me can do to help.

Maybe I'll get the courage to do more in the future, but for now I'm sure I'm one of an army of women not quite ready to jump out the shadows but keen to help.

DiscoBoots

Everything counts: letters; petitions; crowdfunders; tweets; conversations with friends etc.
Each action we take big or small takes back the narrative and centres women’s concerns. Don’t undervalue your contribution.

There's a lot of us out there. It came up at my local moot this week, when we touched on Hogwarts Legacy game and people were more informed (and unimpressed at the TRA tactics) than I thought they would be.

Most adults usually think FFS and move on. It's an online tantrum. It takes something like the Scottish prisons case for them to wake up to the institutional capture.

Same here.

To mark IWD I turned my entire site over to the cause, even enlisting my rabbit.

Hardly actual activism, but given how captured cycling is (I've been booted out of forums for wanting to talk about this), it's the least we could do.

Of course it's actual activism. Thank you!

10:24am 99k exactly. That's 2 hours and 1 minute for the last 1000 signatures, and if it keeps up at the same pace that gives us an eta of 12:25, but it has slowed down a bit since earlier on, so may take a little longer. Still a reasonable chance of a celebratory lunch though - someone may need to tweet JKR to request the appropriate permission slip. 😉

100,000 - 99,050 = 950
950 ÷ 42 = 23 per day

This is a very good point. My DH literally refused to believe rapists were being locked up with women, or kids were being sterilised. It was surely just a thought experiment and those in charge would stop it happening...
