Equality Act - what next?

The petition to look at this seems sadly to have virtually ground to a halt:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/petitions_noticeboard/4722618-petition-to-update-the-equality-act-thread-2

Government have responded with a dismissive:

'providers are already able to restrict the use of spaces/services on the basis of sex and/or gender reassignment where justified. Further clarification is not necessary.'

What next?

We know that providers, while technically able to exclude males, just do not and will not. Nobody seems to agree on or understand the law fully. Legal experts get in huge tangles arguing about it.

The current situation means women are excluded from many women's spaces, there is no provision for single sex services apart from Beira's Place in Scotland, there are still males in women's prisons, and in hospitals.

What do we do if the government and EHRC won't listen? Whatever the law says, this situation is untenable.

Just started watching it creep up! 97,510 now. I ❤️JKR.

the map is fascinating! There are parts of Edinburgh where half a percent of the population (or is it a percentage of voting age population?) has signed the petition!

dunBle · 09/03/2023 07:35

97501 at 7:30am, roughly 450 in the last hour. At that rate it'll hit the threshold at about 1pm, but given it's fairly early in the day it may speed up in a while and zoom through it rather earlier.

DarkDayforMN · 09/03/2023 07:37

It’s already 97562. Holy crap 🚀

Oh please let you be as right as you were last night. As much as i tried i couldn't sleep sleep last night. Once this hits the figure I'm going to be unconscious two minutes later!

It just occurred to me that there are already more signatures on this petition than there are TW in the UK (per the census.)

The contempt and dismissal women have been treated with, purportedly for the benefit of this tiny little group of men, is staggering.

Outs staggering isn't it.

Contempt is definitely what this is all about!

Spot-fucking-on.

Think this'll make Starmer take notice?

@Boiledbeetle Well at the time I did the maths last night it was averaging roughly 10 signatures a minute, so 600 an hour ish (at that rate we'd be done by 11:45am). In the last half hour it's done 283, which works out at 566 an hour, so it's definitely accelerating, even if it's not quite at last night's level yet. If it keeps this up, a celebratory lunch may be in order, although given the changing rate I can't predict exactly when.

If we're having a celebratory lunch do we need permission slips? Wink

@dunBle at least the fear of will we get there by 20th April is lifted!!

Before yesterday it was starting to look like it was going to be an uphill struggle.

But now it's just free wheeling down the other side of the mountain!

The SECOND we hit 100,000 I'm mailing my MP to say how important I think it is that she attends the debate.

She's Tory and sensible on this issue.

Boiledbeetle · 09/03/2023 08:17

Mines Tory and writes two sentences on what you asked and a whole side of A4 all about the most opposed group in our society. Unsurprisingly that's not the women but the middle aged men having an identity crisis.

Found this lovely thread courtesy of Maya's tweet. Your work is seen and appreciated, ladies.

Last time I looked, petition was at 98,137. I make that just over 3 signatories per constituency needed. Can't take long now.
