James Wong quits the Observer

James was rather vocal on Twitter about Catherine Bennett’s piece on misogyny in the Labour Party and complained to The Observer about her - no doubt she was being “transphobic” because … reasons.

Poor James didn’t get the LOJ misogyny free pass and instead got reprimanded about his Twittering so has quit.

I like that he says "plants can be either sex, both sexes or swap between them at will".
How many sexes does he think there are from that sentence?
Isn't "two sexes" transphobic? I thought it was supposed to be a spectrum these days.

To be fair, at least he seems to acknowledge that there are only two sexes (mating types is another matter, of course).

ValerieDoonican · 25/02/2023 19:30

Well you're as baffled as me it seems...😐

NotHavingIt · 25/02/2023 19:31

Quite a few 'right-on' leftist men such as OJ like to signal their supposed support of women's rights by giving the 'correct' response to the Andrew Tate phenomenon. "He's the baddie, not trans people, and not us". He's an easy go to to signal their virtue.

Catherine Bennet was not suggesting that the way in which Russell Moyle and Ben Bradshaw reacted to Rose Duffield in the chamber was worse than, or even equivalent to the behaviour of Andrew Tate, but that sexism and misogyny is coming from every direction; and that leftist men don't get a free pass just because they 'amplify' how bad Tate is.

ValerieDoonican · 25/02/2023 19:33

I mean I have come across "inciting violence and hate against the most vulnerable " blah blah blah repeatedly when women speak up. But minimising rape is a new one.....

Geiger · 25/02/2023 19:37

@QueenHippolyta
I know, please see my follow up post!

It's shocking when someone you look up to turns out to be... silly at best 😏

ValerieDoonican · 25/02/2023 19:39

Oh @NotHavingIt I think I see. That by saying that, like Tate, Bradshaw and Moyle are angry misogynists defender of the most vulnerable we are saying Andrew Tate is only an angry misogynist ie his rape is overlooked. But that doesn't make sense still does it because if you thought that you'd have to think the only thing tate did wrong was rape and his other misogyny was just protecting trans rights . Or something.

Oh dear well my supper won't eat itself

ValerieDoonican · 25/02/2023 20:11

I think everyone needs to ignore my ramblings, sorry!

Rightsraptor · 25/02/2023 20:36

Wong did say transphobia, didnt he?

know I am a bear of little brain at times but, having re-read Bennett's article, I can't see what's "transphobic' about it. I could sort of get why Wong might think it 'misandrist' if he thinks men should be allowed to behave in whatever boorish way they choose and Bennett is objecting. But that's not it.

Just very puzzled about this. 🤔

Just remember: Everything is transphobic.

It's because Lloyd was channelling his misogyny in the cause of trans rights.

James Wong therefore feels that any objection to Lloyd's aggressive behaviour to female MPs must be motivated by transphobia; the assumption is that if you speak up for women being intimidated in this context, you are sacrificing trans people's needs.

BlessedKali · 25/02/2023 21:44

Reading his tweets, he seems fairly low intelligence. How did he get a job writing for a newspaper?

This is the guy who said herbs were racist

I'll have a Google, that sounds an unusual view

TheBiologyStupid · 25/02/2023 22:17

Botany itself is racist: twitter.com/TitaniaMcGrath/status/1281146782735622147/photo/1

Rightsraptor · 25/02/2023 22:18

Thanks for the explanations. It seems a bit of a reach to me, but hey ho. It's probably to be expected from someone who thinks herbs are racist (did he really say that?).

Bonkers

TheBiologyStupid · 25/02/2023 22:19

And women, of course: twitter.com/TitaniaMcGrath/status/1281146782735622147

Sorry, not to imply that religious people can't have sense! But ages made that choice and spoken out about her views based on evidence.

Humanism is a pretty faith based position in a lot of cases.

IcakethereforeIam · 26/02/2023 09:33

He's got an article on the Web edition today? I suppose they must have a few in the pipe.

Allthingsstrange · 26/02/2023 11:11

That's a shame, I have a couple of his books that I use and love. I hate being disappointed by people.

He is a good botanist but I am fed up of his politics in his columns. Ultimately he's there to talk about plants, he's great at that.

I doubt he's going to be picked up elsewhere either. There are plenty of people who want that column and it is highly competitive.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 26/02/2023 11:49

I hop it goes to someone else with an interest in plants and planting from beyond the traditional stuff, but wouldn't it be nice if it went to a woman - maybe someone with an interest in allotment food producing.

I just did:) that was nice of you.
@Calistan and Geiger it's more serious than being silly.
I'm old enough to have been taught about the German scientists who went along in the 1930 and 40s, knowing better.
This is another example of moral cowardice by scientists .

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 26/02/2023 12:14

The whole gender movement smells of 1930s Germany. I used to wonder how people who lived through the totalitarian takeover of their society let it happen. I still wonder, but look with horror at the apparently 'nice' people who are happy to along with the shutting down of reason right here, right now.

zorazora · 26/02/2023 12:17

He has interesting things to say when he’s in gardeners world and GQT because he keeps his politics well out but he just totally irritates me when he’s on because I know he’s said that gardeners and gardening are racist! How has he done so well in his career if we are a bunch of bigots?! 🤷‍♀️ Grow up James and get that chip off your shoulder!
