James Wong quits the Observer

James was rather vocal on Twitter about Catherine Bennett’s piece on misogyny in the Labour Party and complained to The Observer about her - no doubt she was being “transphobic” because … reasons.

Poor James didn’t get the LOJ misogyny free pass and instead got reprimanded about his Twittering so has quit.

Wong did have a good hard think about it, and his next tweet was the truly insightful "plants aren't people"

Well done James!

James Wong is an internet bully. He tried to turn his massive 200k following to attack small accounts. It's a tactic beloved of people like Jack Monroe.

Someone tweets him something he doesn't like. He doesn't engage but screenshots and blocks. Then he posts the screenshot in the hope that his followers will target the tiny account.

He did it to someone with 7 followers who has tweeted just over 400 times in 18 months. A total nobody.

If you express controversial opinions and you have a big account, people will retweet and then weird little accounts will see it and may reply in a less than pleasant way. Most people in the public eye will ignore it. What do you care about what Bryan in Sidcup thinks about you and your opinions?

But not James.

In conclusion, James is a nasty cunt and deserves all the shit he's getting.

@Clymene

He is behaving true to form. What a massive weirdo he is!

James, it's rather transphobic to assume a plant has changed sex, or is both sexes.

What it if identifies as remaining a fixed immutable sex?

Plasmodesmata · 25/02/2023 17:38

I like that he says "plants can be either sex, both sexes or swap between them at will".
How many sexes does he think there are from that sentence?
Isn't "two sexes" transphobic? I thought it was supposed to be a spectrum these days.

Plasmodesmata · 25/02/2023 17:39

Anyway he can go join Alice Roberts on the "scientists who must know they're talking nonsense really" bench.

goants · 25/02/2023 17:46

Shame because he was quite knowledgeable- on plants anyway.

He didn’t come across so well on some of those tweets did he?

Oh no, please tell me Alice Roberts hasn't drink the kool aid?

nauticant · 25/02/2023 17:48

Alice Roberts' veins run with the stuff.

Calistan · 25/02/2023 17:50

I kept trying to like all of your posts haha

nauticant · 25/02/2023 17:50

It's easiest to assume that if someone has a media career, particularly with a social media aspect, and they want to project a #bekind appeal, then they're likely to be a true believer.

Or at least make clear they're seen to be one.

Bloody hell 😭 She's a humanist FFS! Thought she had sense.

Calistan · 25/02/2023 17:53

Alice Roberts confuses me. How can she countenance any of this. I can only think that the sociological pressure is greater than her sense of logic. Pretty shit for a so called scientist.

Geiger · 25/02/2023 17:54

Sorry, not to imply that religious people can't have sense! But ages made that choice and spoken out about her views based on evidence.

Clymene · 25/02/2023 17:55

Ha! Why am I not surprised @KatMcBundleFace

I think he's mates with Alice 'sometimes I don't know what sex is' Roberts.

Calistan · 25/02/2023 17:58

Alice is either stupid or a coward. Same goes for anyone else embroiled.

IcakethereforeIam · 25/02/2023 18:00

Oh, so now the right side of history is <pause for effect> the Wong side of history.

I'll get my coat. Honestly, I'm wearing about ninety of them by now.

SoCunningYouCanStickATailOnItAndCallItAFox · 25/02/2023 18:13

StiggyZardust · 25/02/2023 18:17

Makes a change from “but clownfish”.

Sorry to tell you plenty of atheists and scientists will parrot any nonsense to go along, be popular.
Me, I'm a devoted pagan and overall cranky Lesbian. I have beliefs and principles to sustain me.

NecessaryScene · 25/02/2023 18:28

That's the whole problem with the "clownfish" gambit. A trans human is someone who claims they've changed sex when they haven't.

Clownfish would just make it worse - you'd have fish that claimed they'd changed sex when they haven't but some other fish have.

And you'd have clownfish that had changed sex but insisted they hadn't.

It would be like a Monty Python sketch.

Or that thing from Douglas Adams about the main problem with time travel being the need to invent new tenses.

Looked at some of the replies to Mr "Wong side of history" (bows to @IcakethereforeIam ) and several of them suggest Catherine Bennett was 'minimising rape' in her article. Where? How? [Confused]

ValerieDoonican · 25/02/2023 18:44

Can anyone enlighten me?

I've not seen the tweets but some men on Twitter are arseholes would be my guess.

Rape victims are a convenient guilt term to throw at women who challenge men. If we challenge men verbally, we're responsible for every single victim of male violence. And the fall of the Roman Empire.

IcakethereforeIam · 25/02/2023 19:16

Not seen the tweets but I found and reread the article

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jan/28/forget-andrew-tate-what-about-the-host-of-misogynists-in-labours-ranks

I can only assume, and it's a reach, that Catherine riffs on what young men will do for role models now Tate's been arrested. She 'suggests' some men in labour by drawing parallels between what Tate has said about women and what these Labour blokes have said.

Tate, iirc, has been charged with rape. None of the labour blokes (so far as I'm aware) have been charged with rape. I think these twitter guys might be suggesting that these men are insufficiently rapey to be role models in the vein of Andrew Tate.

Twitter is weird.
