It's extremely disingenuous. Apart from modelling, acting is the main profession where looks are of paramount importance. I remember a female acting acquaintance saying to me that she'd got used to auditioning for parts and being told she wasn't pretty enough (and this is someone who was more than averagely physically attractive). Casting directors want someone with a certain look: young, old, short, tall, dark, blonde etc - and very often the look they want, particularly in women, is "extremely attractive". To be blunt, if they want to cast a man, they want someone who looks like a man, not someone who looks like a woman (in Emma's case, because they is one).
