SNP encouraging protestors to wear masks to evade being identified and disrupts SfW event in Glasgow

An SNP minister has been accused of “reckless” behaviour after she publicised an attempt to disrupt a women’s rally which has already been threatened with violence by transgender rights activists.

Christina McKelvie, who is in a relationship with the SNP Justice Secretary Keith Brown, shared details of a “counter-protest” against an event in Glasgow on Sunday, which is being held by the gender critical Let Women Speak group.

The information spread by the equalities minister on her Twitter page denounced the feminist event as “transphobic” and warned it would include “hate speech”.

It suggested those attending a counter-protest wear face masks to keep their identities secret and linked past Let Women Speak events to white supremacy and endorsement of Hitler.

I amnot sharing this to make anyone who is going to Glasgow on 5th more anxious than they might be as it is already know there are plans for a counter protest.

I am sharing because (assuming its true) it is despicable that an elected representative should be encouraging this type of behaviour, which she illustrates as knowing it is wrong, by saying they should wear masks.

I dont know if there is a code conduct for MSPs but this just further illustrates that madness that seems to be happening. But doubt she will be censored.

Thread about attending the event is here www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4730605-standing-for-women-glasgow-5th-feb

@fromorbit

Did you bother reading the other thread before making your totally inappropriate remark.

The thread about the event has actually allowed women to make contact prior to LWS event happens to meet up for safety, and in the instance I quoted 4 women who couldn't have afforded to get there (and be back in time for work) share the cost.

And for once, showing that being on mumsnet can be more than making clever online comments but actually translate into action.

Ah sorry, read the article too fast in anger 🤦🏻‍♀️

It’s a tactic used by both the far right, far left and any group in between - political, faith based or whatever - which decides that others should be prevented from speaking up.

Yes, it's more of an extremist thing, or a young, bored and excitable thing. The last thing any sane protestor wants is to be kettled and batoned.

GreenSunfish · 04/02/2023 10:05

The police need to protect women and also allow us to hear each other. I’m so sick of these angry men and teenagers taking their misplaced anger out on women. They are morons. Im going and anyone there needs to video and upload any aggression from these men and the sexualised furry animals. Many of these people are too frightened to show their faces incase their mums or work places see them intimidating women!! Every women should be attending these events when they can. It’s more frightening to stay quiet and let these morons into our daughters spaces than to attend.

ArabellaScott · 04/02/2023 11:31

I wonder if there is ANY point in making an official complaint about this?

Women attending an event to talk - yes, even if it is politically something you disagree with - should not require police protection.

This is our Minister for Equalities, basically threatening women.

It's not a 'counter protest', its outright thuggery.

Police Scotland Air Unit have tweeted that they will be in attendance tomorrow.

Bloody hell, just for a few women wanting to talk.

Oh no my bad. Its tho keep an eye on the rampaging decapitate terfs maniacs.

Hopefully after the other weekend their parents have grounded most of the little scrotes and they will be spending the day in their room doing homework.

ArabellaScott · 04/02/2023 14:57

Air Unit?! What the fuck are the furries planning - helicopters?

I wish I hadn't just had that particular mental image actually.

Drones, apparently. Good to see the police are on it, anyway.

Quote scratchedbymycat 'With Indy ref, they afterwards went around saying how happy and engaged everyone was blah blah, ignoring how alienated and angry the majority of the population felt. They actively worked to align Scottish identity with independence, and implied you weren't a proper Scot if you didn't agree with them. It was utterly vile.'

Just wanted to confirm the accuracy of your account here. Such a relief when the silent 'No' majority won.

Well, quite; it's not a protest, so how can they be staging a counter protest? It makes as much sense as labelling it a counter gymkhana, or a counter spelling bee.

I've long been concerned at the tendency for protestors to conceal their faces, surely it's only for one reason? They're there to cause trouble and want to hinder the Police, in their efforts to identify them.

Christina McKelvie really, really ought to be in an awful lot of shit over this, by tacitly encouraging the concealment of their identities, as an MSP and a minister to boot. She's supposed to be someone who stands for legal process, isn't she? Yet she's standing on the side of potential law breakers, in advance of events.

I mean they shouldn't have to, but I'm glad they are. I'm hoping a lot of the TRAs think Better of it and stay home knowing how much media attention it's likely to get.

Drones mean there will be plenty of footage, too, so anyone who has a 'decapitate terfs' sign or similar will be captured for posterity.

ArabellaScott · 04/02/2023 15:30

I'm also heartened, by the way, that the police seem to be tacitly supporting the women's event, here.

And presumably, like last week, allowed to go merrily on their way.🙄

ArabellaScott · 04/02/2023 16:04

Hm, true.

WickedSerious · 04/02/2023 18:16

The furries stuff reminds me of an old episode of CSI,when the 'sexy kitty' turned out to be a little guy with no hair and glasses.

FemaleAndLearning · 04/02/2023 22:39

Let's use our own language not theirs. This is a women's rally, not a protest to Let Women Speak. Those coming against us are protestors, not counter protestors.

It was heartening to see that the police used appropriate language.

FebName · 04/02/2023 22:59

  • IwantToRetire Amazing just seen this on the thread about the LWS event:

4 of us are driving up for the day from the southwest of England. 16 hour round driving trip.

Presumably in the Range Rover that Daddy gave Tarquin on his 18th birthday.*

___

What the actual fuck!!

No fucker gave me a fucking car on my birthday. I was pregnant and homeless when I was 18.

4 random WOMEN who have never met each other are driving up to support our so sisters in Scotland. Don't worry it's a long drive but we have arranged snacks and playlist!

Bought me a Range Rover! I fucking wish!

Eeeek should be sleeping! Up in a few hours!

Stardu · 04/02/2023 23:08

Well, that’s creepy.

Encouraging a bunch of misogynists to wear masks when they go to attack women. Awesome. 👌

JoonT · 04/02/2023 23:32

FOJN · 02/02/2023 06:51

Is the SNP still a legitimate political party or are they just a bunch of thugs?

The SNP like to present themselves as left-wing ‘progressives’. In reality, a lot of them (certainly not all, but quite a lot) are hate-filled bigots. They basically hate the English. They will deny it, of course, but it’s true. And that hatred is largely based on outdated stereotypes and fantasies.

I understand why Scottish people want as much say as possible in how Scotland is run, and I understand why some want a complete break with England (personally, I would be very sorry to see this, and think we’re better off together - at least for defence and trade), but I will never forgive the SNP for stirring up hatred among the young. That is unforgivable. If the 20th-century taught us anything, it’s the danger of stirring up hatred towards your neighbours. I know people will disagree, but I have watched SNP supporters do this. They know that the more anger and hatred they can provoke towards the English, especially among young Scots, the more chance they’ve got in a future referendum.

IwantToRetire · 05/02/2023 00:25

@FebName Just to make clear that I posted the info as a celebration of women organsing via FWR and was NOT the idiot who then replied with comments about range rovers.

Not clear why you quote omits who it was that actually said that.

But they did get put in their place.

So doubt they will own up!

Okay?

DialSquare · 05/02/2023 09:51

I think the poster who commented on the car misunderstood who was driving up. They thought it was 4 TRAs/Furries driving up to be part of the try to shut women up crowd.
