Sam Smith: It’s a shame about the Brit Awards, there’s so much female talent

It is a shame but the important thing is that Sam got what he wanted

As an aside, I was very impressed that the author managed to avoid using any pronouns for Sam Smith throughout the whole article (other than to say Sam Smith uses they/them pronouns at the start).

They're OLD.....

I really can't wait for the current generation of bright young exciting things to hit middle age and decide that actually they haven't ceased to be relevant, become brain dead and really don't feel that they should throw themselves under the feet of the next generation.

Suddenly middle age will become the In Thing and all sparkly glittery with much passion about respect for Life Experience.

Silly me, I forfeit that they’re too old to be talented or relevant. 🤣

I wonder how SS is coping with entering their 30’s? I expect they’ll be suffering from ageism soon, they won’t be happy when much younger people win awards. 😂

I never know what he is going on about

Do plain old fashioned gays like Boy George, Freddie Mercury, Elton John and George Michael count as queer?

this…

Its a shame............ but what everybody predicted as soon as this policy was announced and some had the nerve to dismiss these thoughts as terfism........

FrancescaContini · 23/01/2023 12:58

Yes, just fuck off you self obsessed bore

JeannieDark · 23/01/2023 12:58

Since the shortlist was announced I've made a conscious effort to listen specifically to female artists - so at least they get the royalties if not the awards recognition - it's Spotify so it's a pittance but it's my small effort.

ClaudiusTheGod · 23/01/2023 13:10

He's a beefy bloke and there's nothing wrong with that. It fits with the voice that sounds like air being slowly released from a balloon.

I’ll really be cross when it starts prancing around thinking it’s a fringed lamp shade…

It’s a better female than you, anyway, ‘ cos it has four legs . Oh and a table top. And you can leave your keys on it. So there.

and it you say it isn’t, it will lurch out and give you a nasty bruise.

From the very beginning of this trend (gender identity to replace sex) I was worried, because if the sexes actually were fully equitably treated, if misogyny didn't exist etc. then it would be fine to throw away the old terms referring to sex and to replace it with lifestyle-related terms (though why those would matter any more than someone's political associations, favourite colours etc. is unclear).

But the sexes very much are not equitably treated. The extreme example is Afghanistan, but all countries have space for improvement, and several are going in the wrong direction.

I feared (and was proved right) that this fundamental shift would soon start making (female) women's lot worse.

Dropping to post this in case a sharetoken is needed:

Brit Awards review gender neutrality after all-male artist list

But 'equitable' treatment will always depend on sex in some areas - sport being the obvious example.

From the times piece :
It is understood that the awards’ organisers would be reluctant to return to separate male and female categories as this would leave them unable to nominate non-binary artists

Of course you can, you muffins. Two gender neutral categories, one for males, one for females. That's 100% fully inclusive and equitable.

Although I don’t think Sam Smith is old enough to be remember this , none of those gay men were ‘out’ to the public at the peak of their success in the early 80’s.

Let’s not forget how much (thankfully) attitudes have changed.

It is understood that the awards’ organisers would be reluctant to return to separate male and female categories as this would leave them unable tjo nominate non-binary artists.

Still thinking of the less than 0.5% of non binary identities over the 52% Brits? And sure, lack of women is an industry problem? We know this. This is why the one award that allowed for equal representation was so important for all potential nominee's.

Do an open category as a third option, you can include nominees that didn't make it into the Best Act to bump it up because let's face it there are few NB artists and people don't always release music every year anyway.

Please deal with reality Brit awards. Women are already left out of so much present and legacy work - songs are played less than men's and forgotten sooner as a result, they get less festival bookings which are largely booked by men.

I don't give a shit about what the Grammies are doing, one Country's lack of foresight shouldn't be justification for yours.

Jellycats4life · 24/01/2023 10:17

I’ve been thinking for a while that Sam may soon shrug off Sam’s NB identity in favour of coming out as a transwoman.

In which case, Sam can ask for the Male and Female Artist categories to be reinstated for 2024 and then take the Female award. Win win!

Worse he may decide to be a female on Sundays, Monday and Friday and male on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Reinstate Male and female and win both. Sound farfetched you would think. There's some city twat does just this. Bonkers.

I'm not sure that individual has ever won anything other than women's awards - I guess as a male he's probably not that special.

Sadly more than likely the 'female' category will reappear only when and if a TW artist demands it.
