Sam Smith: It’s a shame about the Brit Awards, there’s so much female talent

It is a shame but the important thing is that Sam got what he wanted

How can they be gay when they is non binary?

Exactly what I wondered too when I read that.

"We all know that I'm neither male nor female, but I know that I definitely only fancy the ones who are the same sex as the sex that I'm not, because I'm not any sex, I'm just special."

It's so transparent where this is heading, isn't it?
2023: "It's a terrible shame that no female artists are included in the nominations - this really should be addressed".
2024: The judges reluctantly make sure that that there's at least one woman in the shortlist, and then....
"It's a terrible shame that no non-binary artists are included in the nominations - this really should be addressed".
2025: The male and female categories are restored, along with a third one for non-binary artists, to make it fair for everybody; but it's discovered that there aren't any other NB artists around to fill the nomination slots, so Sam Smith ends up being nominated in all five of the finalist spots by default.
SS (obviously) wins the category and, in recognition for the outstanding achievement of not only being the first person EVER to win in the new Best NB category but also being the first person EVER to receive FIVE nominations in one single year, everybody agrees that the only half-decent thing to be done is to rename them 'The Tom Petty Sam Smith Brit Awards' in perpetuity.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/01/2023 01:16

He looks like a wrestler in that spiked photo, one of the old ones from the 70s

Yes!!

Maybe, if these are the two ends of the 'binary'....

  1. Lots of artists who want a chance at the brits have declared themselves to be NB, they've always been NB. Come the nominations it's noticed (how is this possible?!) that they're all male nonbinaries.....so....

  2. The 4 categories are now male, female, nonbinary('AMAB') and nonbinary('AFAB').

"When I was young, if I’d seen more queer people at these awards it would have lit my heart"

I never know what he is going on about

Do plain old fashioned gays like Boy George, Freddie Mercury, Elton John and George Michael count as queer?

That’s exactly what went through my mind, @zanahoria, they were winning awards before SS was born. Do these these music icons not count for some reason?!

Musomama1 · 23/01/2023 10:05

@zanahoria true, but they weren't winning loads of awards when SS was a nipper in the mid 90s, except maybe George.

I think it's fair to say there were more gay artists doing really well in the 1980s - not all of them had come out though. Then the scene got a bit straighter.

Cherryblossoms85 · 23/01/2023 10:16

I have no idea what feeling like a woman is either, I just feel like me. Without knowing how it feels like being a man, I have no benchmark to confidently claim I feel like a woman.

YourWinter · 23/01/2023 10:17

Sam Smith is a prick if ever there was one.

purplepencilcase · 23/01/2023 10:19

HootyMcboob76 · 22/01/2023 19:54

"“I feel just as much a woman as I am a man.”"

Go fuck yourself.

You don't have a clue what it means to be a woman.

Twat.

As you may have guessed I am through with being nice about these raging deluded numpties.

I absolutely agree. How dare any man say this. They have no idea.
I have no time for any of this bullshit.

They're OLD.....

I really can't wait for the current generation of bright young exciting things to hit middle age and decide that actually they haven't ceased to be relevant, become brain dead and really don't feel that they should throw themselves under the feet of the next generation.

Suddenly middle age will become the In Thing and all sparkly glittery with much passion about respect for Life Experience.

Being Gay isn’t speshul enough now, you need some sort of label to show how interesting and different you are apparently. You also need to build your whole personality and career around how truly speshul you are

IcakedefargeIam · 23/01/2023 10:28

Just a sec. I have to admit I've not heard much of SS's work, but that dreadful James Bond dirge won an Oscar?

Musomama1 · 23/01/2023 10:32

Modern music innit? This is why teens have to organise themselves around identity and activism rather than exciting music.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 23/01/2023 10:32

That made me so mad! It was all down to their wishes and now, no women are nominated as everyone knew would happen.

I wouldn't mind but Sam Smith being nominated just felt like the Brits knew they had to because of their whinging that caused the change in the first place. They've not produced a decent song in years

So many great females are being sidelined, I wouldn't be surprised if everyone who wins will be male. Frankly I think female artists should boycott it but they won't because they'd get cancelled.

GoodWeatherforDucks · 23/01/2023 10:36

Surely the pronouns they/them indicate more than one person, so all NB musicians should just be entered in to the Best Group category? Makes about the same amount of sense.

GoodWeatherforDucks · 23/01/2023 10:39

I nominate Sam Smith for a Brat Award.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/01/2023 10:41

They could always make it more inclusive by renaming it 'Best Artist Who Either Is Or Is Not Sam Smith Award' - but I'm guessing that would be seen as far too binary.

Ofcourseshecan · 23/01/2023 10:50

ErrolTheDragon · 23/01/2023 00:53

I've read through the first few comments and they're about as impressed with smith as we are. One mentioned that Rod Liddel had touched on the subject in his column:
In a desperate attempt to be hip and with it, daddy-o, the Brit awards scrapped its male and female categories for best artist and replaced them with one “gender-neutral” list. Imagine the woke puzzlement, shading into apoplexy, when all five shortlisted acts were male.
The left was angry, but simply didn’t know what to say. Apart from one marvellously dim columnist who studied the result, scratched his little head and opined:
“My view is gender-neutral awards should reserve 50 per cent of nominations for women.”

Whoever could he have been referring to?🤔

one marvellously dim columnist who studied the result, scratched his little head and opined: “My view is gender-neutral awards should reserve 50 per cent of nominations for women.”

I thought, be fair, that had to be a deliberate joke. Then I found out it was Owen Jones. Oh dear ....

ArcaneWireless · 23/01/2023 10:51

Oh NOW It is a shame.

Got you. 🤔

RobertsRadio · 23/01/2023 10:56

SS is an attention seeking twat in any category.

puffyisgood · 23/01/2023 10:58

I personally think SS is a good singer/performer, e.g. the song he did with the funny little German TW last year was excellent, but this whole episode has been a nonsense from start to finish, the very small, very niche, downsides with having distinct M/F categories are so obviously outweighed by their advantages that it's not funny.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 23/01/2023 11:31

GoodWeatherforDucks · 23/01/2023 10:39

I nominate Sam Smith for a Brat Award.

Twat award more like.

I never felt anything negative or positive before but their moaning during lockdown when they lived in a huge home with all mod cons really irritated me. I have mates who did it alone in a bedsit with no outdoor space at all, worrying about their bills and whether they'd have jobs left so my sympathy was directed to them, not a multimillionaire who had to slum it with a cinema at home.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/01/2023 12:02

Attention seeking wanker. Fuck off, it's your fault.

Cormick · 23/01/2023 12:10

IcakedefargeIam · 23/01/2023 12:18

I'm glad that he seems to have made peace with his weight. He's a beefy bloke and there's nothing wrong with that. It fits with the voice that sounds like air being slowly released from a balloon.

I can't remember the exact quote, but they commented once in Burnistoun about somebody's outfit looking like 'the flair o' TK Max' Grin
