Give me a child when they are 7 and I will give you the they/them. “Told in Clara’s inimitable style, this series has so many wonderful ingredients: family, friends and dogs! But weaved inbetween the pages is an added layer of belonging and understanding, with non-binary representation. Clara is the master of storytelling for young readers and I couldn’t be happier to see this on our list.” Yeah, you 'weave' that stuff in, Clara, let your sexist, homophobic ideology seep into their young and very malleable brains when they're not even aware of what you're doing to them.

Wasn't CV one of the chief persecutors of Rachel Rooney? And Onjali Rauf?

ArabellaScott · 12/01/2023 11:58

Yes. She is not nice.

WaffleDogBlanket · 12/01/2023 11:59

Oh no, DD enjoyed some of her books!

FunnyTalks · 12/01/2023 12:00

Thanks Clara.

It's people like you who raise kids that go to school and police my kids when they don't adhere to stereotypes. Yes I know kids just say this shit. But it's wearing. And boring. And if you're a shy kid already sometimes it's too much.

From the point of view of the kid who is being policed for their appearance/ hobbies/ choices *the experience is the same if the miniature stereotype police learned it from gender ideologists "you are a girl because your shoes are gold" or old fashioned sexists "you can't wear those shoes because you're a boy".

Yes. She is not nice.

Bet she identifies as nice though

Worse. She identifies as righteous.

OldCrone · 12/01/2023 12:37

She has a trans child (now an adult). She is as impartial about this as Susie Green.

ScrollingLeaves · 12/01/2023 12:39

This has reminded me to buy
‘My Body is Me’

WandaWomblesaurus · 12/01/2023 12:45

Can Clara be held responsible by parents who will be taking people to court over this?

PaleBlueMoonlight · 12/01/2023 12:47

Do we know if the character is a non-binary child or a non-binary adult?

Spellegrin · 12/01/2023 12:52

This is evil. 7 year old children. I could weep.

IvyTwines · 12/01/2023 13:12

@WandaWomblesaurus "Can Clara be held responsible by parents who will be taking people to court over this?"

Yes, I have been wondering about that, and the agents and publishers who will have enabled it to get into the hands of impressionable children. The same question applies with TV shows and maybe even the writers, cast and crew approvingly liking or retweeting 'top surgery' fanart or fundraisers from fans online, which I've also seen.

Said child has a PhD in genocide studies, apparently:

I mention this only because of the constant hyperbolic claims by trans activists that feminists are committing "genocide" against them and trying to deny their right to exist. I wonder if studying actual genocide would make you more cautious about using that kind of hyperbole.

RoyalCorgi · 12/01/2023 14:23

Looks like my hope is misplaced:

Leah Owen is Clara Vulliamy's daughter, and her pinned tweet says that she has published a scholarly article "examining intersections between anti-trans and genocidal ideologies".

The other day I was listening to Jonathan Freedland talk on a podcast about his new book about the Holocaust, and I don't think I can even begin to express how offensive it is to compare what the Nazis did to the Jews with feminists' concerns about trans activism.

IvyTwines · 12/01/2023 15:01

@RoyalCorgi especially given that a pioneer of trans surgery, the man who performed Dora Richter and 'Danish Girl' Lili Elbe's surgery, Erwin Gohrbandt, went on to be an actual Nazi doctor involved in the murderous hypothermia experiments on human beings in Dachau.

I couldn’t actually finish reading Leah Owen’s paper it’s so staggeringly poor. Can someone with more patience let me know if she figures out by the end that TRAs are the ones routinely openly threatening to commit genocide &/or the reason that women are Saying Mean Words is because they are true. It’s not “toxification” to refuse to pretend that trans women aren’t just as much of a threat as the rest of their sex class & state they are unwelcome in female spaces because they are male. Statistics for the UK show, if anything, that is a generous analysis.

Nonbinary 'representation' is fine. Non binary people exist therefore should be represented in literature. Unless of course it is characterised through the struggles of a 7 year old child. Then it would be not fine at all.

My daughter recieved a present of 'Girl's who slay Monsters' for Christmas,
"tales of Ireland's mythical goddesses-their astonishing powers [etc]...often replaced or rewritten to make room for male warriors and Kings...Until now" .

Yeah! I thought, as we settled down to read it together.

Out the gap, we are introduced to Bé Mannair who "didn't feel (author's italics) like a girl inside and wondered if she'd be more comfortable as a boy. The goddess felt trapped in her body - and sometimes felt like scratching her way out of her skin".
Next up is Bé Binn "a big haired, big boned giantess...who wore eye-catching silk dresses...she also had all the latest accessories...Bé Binn thought boys deserved the chance to see how beautiful and stylish she was too".
The third I'd like to mention almost made me cry. It's a reworking of the legend of Queen Medh, a cornerstone of Irish Mythology. This woman needs little writing. She went to war to proove her equal worth to her husband. She was an unapologetic slapper. It is said to have taken 30 men to satisfy her. Legend also has it she visited birthing pains on the (male) army of her enemies thereby incapacitating them. In the book she is given the moniker of "Business Woman and Menstruation Educator". The book reimagines Queen Medh part in the famous battle of Ulster as follows "A mighty battle began. But in the midst of all the madness, Medb got her period". She then proceeds to educate Fergus her lover, on how periods work.

This book won the Irish National Book award and is aimed at 9-12 year olds.

The author of the book is a mother of two young children. I have have no words to express how utterly bewildered I am.

NitroNine · 12/01/2023 23:57

I don’t know if it’d be helpful or if it’s purely hagiographical, but “Saint Brigid and Other Amazing Irish Women” has just been published & the author won’t have done anything like that with it @Link3.

ScrollingLeaves · 13/01/2023 00:07

I have been thinking how the religious idea of having a soul which is always the most precious part of you, allows for a sense of self that is beyond being either male nor female. Meanwhile, the feeling that you were wanted by a creator as you are is a help too.

ScrollingLeaves · 13/01/2023 00:09

Sorry, I should have explained that that train of thought came about because NitroNine mentioned Saint Brigid.

This is evil. 7 year old children. I could weep.

I know a 7 year old girl who has been socially transitioned into a boy by her parents. In the space of a 30 minute extracurricular activity she apropos of nothing said "I'm transgender." I just feel so sad that at such a young age she is already obsessing about gender as if it's the most or only interesting part of her personality. Another year old I asked where is "name," replied "She, I mean he's over there." I also feel sad that other 7 year olds are being taught to ignore the evidence of their own eyes and senses in having to refer to someone they know is female as a boy.

There's an Instagram blogger who has socially transitioned one of her sons, publicly, on Instagram since he was a toddler. Multiple posts about being the parent of a "trans child," an ally and how anyone concerned is a bigot and evil and out to get them. She does sponsored posts of matchy dress reveals with her "daughter" and the brothers wear the matching "boy" outfits. It's as stereotyped and regressive as it comes, an appalling one-way street for the v young child (who is often quoted discussing what the impact of any critical bigots is on them...so clearly being raised exposed to the idea that they are in danger etc) and presumably not without some serious confusion for the siblings too..

Why brands work with this family, and not a single professional involves themselves is absolutely beyond comprehension.
