Feminist content optional but GC feminist values, critical thinking and optimism preferred, levity also good! I'm listening on Apple podcasts.

I've enjoyed:
Gender: a Wider Lens
Julie Bindel's Podcast
Blocked and Reported
Jim Harold's Campfire
Uncanny
More or Less
Clear and Vivid
The Office Ladies
Talking Sopranos

I used to love Thinking Allowed but I've gone off it a bit due to it going woo/mushy but would love a replacement.

I don't know how I'm going to fit all these in, but some great suggestions here. I really recommend Caroline Criado Perez's Visible Women as mentioned above.

If you like true crime I have an inkling that Redhanded is a bit GC. Amongst other things Suruthi made a comment about Tunnocks tea cakes and I found myself wondering…..

Oh I desperately want Hannah and Suruthi to be GC...they definitely hint at it, especially Suruthi, but I just can't be sure!
If you like true crime though, they're just brilliant.

You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist
Meghan Daum
Dark Horse
Mikhaila Peterson (depending on the guest)
Modern Wisdom
Honestly, Bari Weiss
Brendan O'Neill
Joe Rogan if he's got someone interesting on
The Evolution of a Snake (all about Taylor Swift, probably not relevant here!)

I listen to a lot of podcasts when walking, exercising, doing housework or on trains! Spotify has a lot of interesting ones.

Nolan investigates stonewall
Crime analyst

Pretty much all the above & including:
Unspeakable with Meghan Dahm
Dark Horse
This Jungian Life
Disaffected (although sometimes, Josh, honestly)
Your Undivided Attention
Also Keep Talking with Dan Riley.

Oh yes! This Jungian Life too! Lisa Marchiano of Genspect. Beautiful explorations of the depth of the human psyche as well as cultural phenomena through a psychological lens. (Very good for just before sleep too- great dream fodder!)

Oh this has really taken off, thanks all! I'm busily searching and downloading.

I like Katie, but Jesse can be annoying.

Ah, opposite for me, can't bear Katie! Jesse and he sounded so sensible on GAWL, maybe because of my first impressions I tolerate him better.

Yes @DameMaud it's a little gem! Have you also listened to Secrets of The Motherworld? (Also Lisa M & Stella OM) I like dipping into that pot of wisdom though not a mum myself.

I'm also going to say Blocked & Reported has its moments but I find both hosts insufferable.

Ah no! I'll look that up too. Thanks @RaininginDarling

I was ambivalent about BARpod (Blocked and Reported) but the more I listened, the more I got into it and the banter between them. I’m the same about A Special place in Hell - it’s a bit like listening in to a private conversation. Sometimes illuminating sometimes not. I think I prefer Meghan Daum on her own in The Unspeakable

The US-based podcasts continue the great traditions of a particular kind of journalism - based around the long-form essay. We don’t get that so much in the UK where journalism is much more around political and investigative work. Do I enjoy checking in to the work of Daum and Weiss.

Meghan Murphy has 2 regular podcasts. Like Boyce, she’s pretty good at being contemplative and leaving space for her interlocutors to speak.

Another spectacular Boyce own-goal (he’s not good on feminism) was in his “Calmversation” with Kara Dansky, where he could not participate in her raising the issue of thinking about a world in which men did not rape women. His imagination simply failed, in a spectacular way.

beastlyslumber · 04/12/2022 10:09

Oh I nearly forgot Bridget Phetasy! She's great. I loved her interview with Louise Perry a little while ago - it was very moving. Bridget's essay "I regret being a slut" is excellent, too, and she talked about it with Bret Weinstein on his podcast a while ago. Also a very moving conversation.

RaininginDarling · 04/12/2022 12:07

Very succinctly put @WindyHedges

I haven’t listened to this one and I’m in two minds about it. For such a thoughtful, heterodox thinker in other regards BB displays a massive blindspot when it comes to understanding women’s lives and experiences. It’s so disappointing and I don’t get much sense of him evolving or trying to shed light on his bias in this area. On the other hand he does platform feminists and helps to show up the problem.

EdithStourton · 04/12/2022 13:40

Slightly off the general run suggested here, but I'm a massive fan of Battleground Ukraine with Saul David and Patrick Bishop. If you want to keep tabs on what's going on there, it's worth a listen. They have some excellent guests.

NoFlowersForEmily · 04/12/2022 13:58

On the edge with Andrew Gold.
Let's talk about sects.

nauticant · 04/12/2022 14:01

With reservations, I do like Decoding the Gurus. The Internet is teeming with people who set themselves up as gurus as being uniquely placed to answer some of the big questions of life, and a Northern Irish anthropologist and a Australian psychologist take pleasure in sticking the boot in to some of the worst. (They are charitable to those they see as being a bit over-enthusiastic but giving generally sensible advice having an evidence base.)

However, there are two major problems. The first is that they like to divide things into Left, where they tend to be indulgent, and Right, which they react badly to. The second follows from the first, and that's that they have a rather distorted view of gender critical approaches, because they perceive Right wing contamination. There's a good episode where Helen Lewis helped them out of that hole but generally they climb back into it whenever they can because they find it comfortable.

Everyone has blindspots, myself included, and many men struggle to understand things from a female perspective - that's if they even bother to try to understand it at all.

This is true of many of the so called heterodox thinkers, but can be especially jarring and disappointing when they are often able to see through the bs on other issues.

Some good podcast suggestions on this thread, many I wasn't aware of but am now going to investigate.

British History Podcast. The feminist angle so far (I'm only up to 1000AD after 300 episodes) being the difference in which Mercia and Wessex gave to the importance in woman to their respective royal houses.

Ballygoforwards · 04/12/2022 22:41

I’ve been listening Paddy’s Podcast. Probably not interesting to most this side of the pond as it deals with social issues in Ireland, but two episodes of note interview women who have previously been inmates at Limerick Prison which hosts 3 transgender prisoners (m to f), including an infamous one who has been convicted of sexual abusing children. It’s quite the eye opener. And Paddy is most certainly a fully signed up GC. Nice to see old men not giving two hoots about offending. Worth a listen. They’re very short.

WindyHedges · 05/12/2022 13:32

Excellent analysis of a potentially really interesting podcast. I've listened to a few epi of Decoding the Gurus, including their conversation with Helen Lewis. However, some of their epis go on & on & on & on ... longer than Julian Vigo or Jordan Peterson (whose 12 Rules book was great in parts, but who is clearly mad). So I've stopped subscribing. BAR does it much better.

It's interesting how many of us have found the same heterodox podcasts, because we're looking for feminist analyses of the mad world we're in at the moment & the assault on women's rights.

But I worry that some of these podcasters are quite conservative US commentators. Are there more lefty podcasts which are also feminist? Any recommendations? (beyond Savage Minds/Vigo, and BAR - who are US-based liberals).?

DameMaud · 05/12/2022 16:33

For those who mentioned and enjoy the Uncanny podcast: I went to see his (Danny Robbins) play this weekend at the Criterion theatre in the West End.
It's called '2:22' and it's a treat! Highly recommend. Fictionalised but drawn from the podcast.

Not cheap though! Had it as early Xmas gift. Why is theatre so bloody expensive??

crispinglovershighkick · 05/12/2022 17:17

Actually I've been wanting to discuss the BARpod interview with Meghan Murphy. Anyone here listen to that? I came away with more questions than answers and I put it down to K being a lazy or uninformed interviewer. How does objecting something (in this case porn) go straight to 'Oh you want to BAN it'?
