Worth a read, in the Guardian www.theguardian.com/society/2022/nov/24/an-explosion-what-is-behind-the-rise-in-girls-questioning-their-gender-identity?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

An excellent article it may be but can someone remind me when this was first reported...2018?

I'd like to count how many years went by before the Guardian covered this.

ResisterRex · 24/11/2022 19:09

Janice Turner is not impressed:

Ash Sarkar
Owen Jones
Helen Islan
Suzie Green
The Liberal mp who can see souls
Dawn Butler
Nicola Sturgeon
Patrick Harvie
Ruth Hunt
Etc etc

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 24/11/2022 19:20

I agree @RoyalCorgi However hesitant they may be, however far behind they are trailing, even the Guardian seems to be putting two and two together.

nauticant · 24/11/2022 19:48

If you've been a remote observer of the big court and tribunal cases recently, you might have noticed "Amelia Gentleman" in the list of other observers.

ArabellaScott · 24/11/2022 20:08

Good to see this covered, and thoughtful work from Amelia Gentleman.

Empowermenomore · 24/11/2022 20:30

What I missed the most in that article is the infamous line that pushed many parents to either go along and be celebrated as brave and awesome and others into silence for fear to be called bigot, judged the opposite to brave and awesome and for any backlash: better a son than a dead daughter.

Blackmail on suicide statistics put the fear of Goddess in many parents mind. It was a way of grooming the adults.

bellinisurge · 24/11/2022 20:44

Amusing new "birth registered female" phrase rather than the utterly bullshit "assigned female at birth". I presume this is the new "we never said 'born in the wrong body'". They know the stupid language is catching them out.

Summerhillsquare · 24/11/2022 21:21

Gentleman is a serious investigative journalist and this felt like a precursor to more to me.

Pinniepotter · 24/11/2022 21:25

FINALLY

Fgs

But why did Suzanne Moore and Hadley Freeman have to be hounded out before they got there.

Still lack credibility to me

But it's a step in the right direction

bellinisurge · 24/11/2022 21:31

The TRAs are going to lose their shit. The Holy Bible of Gender Woo has printed heresy

Fenlandia · 24/11/2022 22:35

Amelia Gentleman's work on Windrush is unflinching in calling out the devaststing effects of ideology at the Home Office on people's lives. I hope this is the start of more in-depth journalism from her on this topic. She wouldn't be short of material!

WomenShouldWinWomensSports · 24/11/2022 22:39

I feel this is a huge step in the right direction, I agree that they need to break this to their readers gently. There are obvious omissions from the full picture, however, it's taken hundreds of MN threads to cover most of those aspects in depth and what I want to see isn't one exhaustive article (then nothing else about it), I want them to cover each of these things separately, in all the depth they require, with detailed investigative reporting, scientific evidence, and the perspectives of those harmed, for every single issue that hasn't been covered in this article and every issue she's touched on (like puberty blockers). I want lots and lots of articles. One article can be missed/scrolled past. Dozens of articles on different aspects will catch more people and bring more awareness.

Tl;dr: This is a real watershed for the Grun, I look forward to them working on more within this area.

Stopsnowing · 24/11/2022 23:14

Amelia Gentleman is a great journalist.

lanadelgrey · 24/11/2022 23:19

As I always say, it pays to write letters. For some unknown reason the GC ones tend to get more of a showing on their letters page on a Saturday 😉
And possibly worth pointing out the omissions pour encourager more coverage 😀

WarriorN · 25/11/2022 06:42

I'm with Janice.

It'll be good for some to read that article but I suspect there will be boundaries set by the guardian that will never be crossed.

SallyLockheart · 25/11/2022 07:25

I’ve just re read the article. Whilst it is good the subject is starting to be aired at the Guardian it feels as though the author has been “restrained” by guardian boundaries. For example the article states that the reasons the Tavistock was closed was because of unbearably long waits for patients. NO. It was closed because it was deemed unsafe and the service it provided was adequate.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 25/11/2022 07:39

SallyLockheart - child safeguarding, ethical medical practice and evidenced medicine are transphobic dog whistles dontchaknow?

SallyLockheart · 25/11/2022 08:03

Typo. Inadequate service. MrsO. Sadly I agree with you on that point. No rational debate or discussion allowed. Article skated over the total lack of data collection and follow up of cases. Mentioned that it will take time to follow up on current cases but CASS detailed that no evidence of any value had been maintained by the Tavistock

GrabbyGabby · 25/11/2022 08:27

This was top of the 'most read' all day yesterday and is still there today.

Guardian readers want better reporting on this.

Anything from LOJ?

JustSpeculation · 25/11/2022 08:37

I read the article. I thought it was overly descriptive and a bit uncritical. But this is a major step forward and it was good to see in the Graun.

Her work on Windrush was amazing, which is why this piece is so disappointing. She didn't attempt to be even-handed about what was happening to the Windrush victims, even though her husband was a member of the government responsible.

But she really pulls her punches on this piece. Where's all the information about the evidence now emerging about the long-term harm of puberty blockers? About young women who deeply regret their transition but are left with facial hair and vaginal atrophy? About the countries, such as Sweden, that are changing their policy on allowing young people to transition? About the harm done by Mermaids, the charity that has been pushing children to transition and has labelled any questioning of this as "transphobic"? About the thousands of teenage girls in the US who are having double mastectomies, and the doctors, such as Sidhbh Gallagher, who are advertising their services on Tik Tok and making a fortune out of "yeeting the teets" of 14- and 15-year old girls?
