It took them a while but here we go

You mean if SG paid attention to public concerns and addressed issues about accountability properly, she'd actually not be the subject of multiple threads on MN...

Well, of course, but pigs will fly before that happens.

NellyCat · 18/11/2022 17:17

we did some general top-level Google and internet searches. We did a social media search [and it] didn’t come up.

How can she claim that with a striagh face. Until this blew up it was on his LSE lecturer profile!

Boiledbeetle · 18/11/2022 17:23

@RedToothBrush doesn't he use a lot of big words to hide the fact that basically he's interested in porn and the sexuality of CHILDREN!

Mermaids either didn't carry out any checks OR they did and found the above perfectly fine with their children focused charity.

I'm not sure I want to know which is the truth. Because one is stupidity and the other.... Well let's not go there!

ResisterRex · 18/11/2022 17:24

If they're going for plausible deniability then it's not landing, shall we say.

Boiledbeetle · 18/11/2022 17:26

@ResisterRex If they even did the most basic of Google searches they wouldn't/shouldn't have taken him on as a trustee. That they say they did and then took him on is unforgivable. It's literally handing over children that aren't theirs to stranger's who like children, and not in a wholesome healthy way.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/11/2022 17:51

I just can't get my head round this at all. I don't know whether it was established that they contacted him or he applied. Either way, did they just think 'We want an academic, this man says he's an academic, oh look he's listed on the website of the LSE, I've heard of that, it's world famous, and he's in the Gender Studies department, we're all about gender - he'd be a catch!' with no grasp that they should look at what his research interests and publications were actually about? SG isn't a graduate as far as I can see, but she's been mixing with a lot of people who are, who could surely explain this to her, if they wanted to. How could this happen? How stupid and naive (let's be charitable here) do you have to be not to look at this man's stated interests to check he's suitable to be a Trustee of a children's charity working with particularly vulnerable children?

ResisterRex · 18/11/2022 17:52

And there's still the mystery of why his name was hidden from the public until the LGBA case, which changed things.

RoyalCorgi · 18/11/2022 17:58

The other explanation: Mermaids looked at his interest in children's sexuality and thought: "This is exactly the kind of person we want as a trustee."

The farticle also fails to mention the inexplicable sudden departure of Darren Mew, formerly MM's Digital Engagement Manager.

If he is no longer employed by them, why was he quoted in an article, by Miriam Barker, about tucking underwear which was posted under the BBC News Wales page two days ago?

Yes perhaps less time focusing on trying to work out how women can be linked to right wing extremists and more time figuring out that anyone who advocates for lack of safeguarding, boundaries and age cut offs will subsequently attract extremists on their side too!

FrancescaContini · 18/11/2022 19:03

@RedToothBrush goodness, doesn’t this individual pack a lot of buzz words into his work? I am wondering what the “steadfastness of the gender binary” is.

I'm guessing it's like the 'steadfastness of gravity'.

It is plausible. His work involves looking at 'queering' of children and childhood, as I understand it.

Which meshes with Mermaid's aims.

Indeed - he's even cited as MM's engagement officer: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-62430647

Shock Trans woman hopes underwear line will aid safety www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-62430647 Mermaids engagement officer Darren Mew said: "Many trans people have different requirements from swimwear and underwear than their cis-gendered counterparts, and having a line that understands this whilst promoting body confidence is a huge step forward for the trans community.
ArabellaScott · 18/11/2022 19:31

That's just a bloody advert for that person's product. Blatant.

They decided the words children's sexuality and transgender were the only words they were concerned about, yes.

Boiledbeetle · 18/11/2022 20:12

're Darren Mews, when they are asked by the press about Mews Mermaids responded with

""Secondly, The Times newspaper published an article today about a former member of staff. While we can confirm that the person referred to no longer works for the charity, we are unable to comment further due to the need to maintain confidentiality."

So....have they rehired him? or is It that the BBC article is old and had been held back from an earlier publication date maybe?
