Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Boiledbeetle · 08/11/2022 15:33

Sorry, meant to add I feel your pain!

Lottapianos · 08/11/2022 15:34

It's just so pathetic and craven. The idea that 'woman' is an identity is so offensive

pinheadlarry · 08/11/2022 15:37

They dont do this to men in regards to transmen, its ridiculous

Because women don't usually demand and threaten to be included.

which proves they know who the men are and prioritise them.

Was encouraged to fill out a "diversity" form at work. I usually reply with prefer not to say on all the questions because I think it shouldn't matter what my protected characteristics are as long as I can do my job. Last question was, "Is you gender identity the same as your assigned sex at birth?" At which point I deleted the form and got straight onto the creator to get it changed. I don't have a gender identity and my sex wasn't observed at birth. Interestingly, this question had no option for PREFER NOT TO SAY.

Honestly.

ZeldaFighter · 08/11/2022 15:40

OP, I've also had a similar thing from work. A woman's programme with eligibility to anyone who "identifies as a woman".

I'm sure it's violating sex discrimination law but as it's a voluntary programme, I'm not sure enough to complain (and threaten my employment).

StillWeRise · 08/11/2022 15:46

but the WHOLE POINT of the programme is that women are under represented in STEM
interesting, when you look at the eligibility they have very thoughtfully noted that weekend attendance may be difficult or those with caring responsibilities!
and they'll try and find a solution (great!)
wonder how many TW will need to avail themselves of that?

ItsLateHumpty · 08/11/2022 15:51

“RisingWISE is an established Oxbridge network inspired by EnterpriseWISE: designed by women, for women and delivered entirely by women. The programme Directors are Dr Shima Barakat, University of Cambridge and Dr Anne Miller, University of Oxford (for bios please see the 'programme aims and eligibility' section). Please note that anyone identifying as a woman is welcome to participate.”

So everyone then, if you state your preferred pronouns are submit and subjugate ahem colours are the totes totally non non binary pink and blue (and white and a triangle) I mean the very emp… argggh fuck it by brain mal computes.

Bastards

cosmiccosmos · 08/11/2022 15:55

There was me thinking that only the brightest and best went to Oxbridge :-(

crosstalk · 08/11/2022 16:00

It would be interesting to know how many "male" prizes etc are open to transmen. However, I suspect because of the history of older universities most prizes would be completely open to all comers because until the late 19C and 20C there were comparatively few women. I don't know any who were blocked but there may have been.

It strikes me this is a bit like the sports scandal and others where women get deprived a place for the sake of a transwoman, but not quite. There's clearly a physical difference but not necessarily a mental difference - but women need as much encouragement as possible to do STEM and succeed as possible.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 08/11/2022 16:02

While I share everyone's frustration, it's worth noting that these women will be targeted, threatened and bullied if they fail to centre men in their definitions of women. While I wish they were more courageous and stood up for scientific accuracy and the rights of women like many courageous women, they know that they'll be harassed and likely sacked if they don't bow down to the male supremacist ideology. Completely depressing.

viques · 08/11/2022 16:04

What a missed opportunity to advance women , to allow women to really feel empowered, to encourage women to be role models for the future, to give women the space and time to network and build relationships with other women in areas of employment and enterprise where women are often underrepresented, isolated and disregarded.

Sometimes I wonder who the real enemies of women actually are when it seems that some women are so energised by the possibility of limiting other women’s advancement and so keen to maintain male hierarchies.

FernlovingNodosaur · 08/11/2022 16:05

Yes the inclusive "anyone identifying as a woman" strikes again. So in fact it's basically open to anyone women OR men, under represented in STEM or not. In fact knowing Oxfords uni's previous form. The mostly likely outcome will be some beardy upper middleclass white woke bro claiming a womanly essence who's well in with the Uni hierarchy will be chosen.

StillWeRise · 08/11/2022 16:09

of course they may just have put that bit in to avoid being targeted
you can easily imagine that the applications of TW might not meet the grade

ErrolTheDragon · 08/11/2022 16:23

Yes the inclusive "anyone identifying as a woman" strikes again.

It's not 'inclusive'.
It excludes all those born female who don't 'identify as a woman'. So, transmen (well, maybe they'd self exclude from this anyway), 'nonbinaries', 'genderfluid', and women who just are women and don't 'identify' as anything.

Scooopsahoy · 08/11/2022 16:40

How depressing. “Identifying as” does not equal “being”. It should be as simple as that.

My 4 year old daughter identified as being a Disney Princess the other day. It doesn’t mean that she is one!

paintitallover · 08/11/2022 16:46

Apparently it's when some bloke tells her he is too.

MyrtleNeedsAPlaster · 08/11/2022 17:11

It's the absolute fucking dishonesty of it that I despise. This is just the first line of the "Aims":

"Women are being urged to pursue careers in STEM subjects, where they often excel, but face a huge disparity in achieving success and leadership roles"

OP posts:
ReunitedThorns · 08/11/2022 17:12

You should try and get only men to sign up and attend, that will make it very obvious how stupid the "women*" is.

TheBiologyStupid · 08/11/2022 17:17

To answer the question in the thread's title:

Q: When is a woman not a woman?

A: When he's a man using women for validation/as a doormat.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 08/11/2022 17:18

Dr Barakat chairs the women’s network which is also open to anyone who identifies as a woman

Run by women for anyone who Feels like one

FernlovingNodosaur · 08/11/2022 17:31

ErrolTheDragon Errol I was being ironic. I know too well how transmen get treated in general in society, because bio women however they identify will always end up getting the short straw. It pretty obvious also that places like Oxford university want to keep the status quo of centuries of patriarchal privileged, and are just paying lip service to women with schemes like this.
