Miriam Margolyes on Radio 4 Today programme earlier talking about Robbie Coltrane. Justin Webb says something like - he was firm in his support for JKR - MM replies - well it is a difficult area, as a gay woman, I just want everybody to do what they want -

It is an example of how so many in the entertainment industry in particular have failed to examine the subject at all. What are the consequences of everyone doing what they want Miriam? I am astounded at the lack of curiosity in general in our current culture. Did anyone else hear it?

To be fair to MM, she does say

MM: - I'm with him. I would absolutely not put her to one side. I think that's just silly. Let's talk it through. Anyway, the thing about Robbie... [conversation moves away from topic]

I remember seeing an interview with Colin Firth when pride and prejudice had just come out. I realised then that you should never hear an actor speak out of character. Being a famous actor does not mean they have anything more sensible to say on any other topic than any other random person in the street. I don't understand why their pronouncements on anything outwith their profession are held up as important.

Lovelyricepudding · 15/10/2022 13:16

Sorry a bit harsh to say never hear them talk out of character. Better to say never expect to hear anything of the character in the actor as a person. The fact they act interesting people doesn't by itself make them interesting.

You are right to remind those of us objecting to ‘I just want everyone to have what they want’ that this remark of MM’s was somewhat balanced by her going on to say this [the quote in your post].

Also the interview was really about her memories of Robbie Coltrane.

jennakong · 16/10/2022 08:21

She is a ghastly old woman. I used to like her but now I think she's odious. You can have strong opinions and express them robustly without effing and blinding. If she wasn't rich and famous, she'd have a collection of ASBO and the local police would all know her by name and have to move her on from town centres for breaching the peace.

Much of her ranting is just virtue-signalling -she owns about eight properties across the UK and Australia, lives in a large house in London alone, and supports mass immigration. Don't they all.

I am just increasingly sickened with that generation of people. A sledgehammer has been taken to women's rights, gay children are being transed and we are struggling with the fallout of things they will never be troubled by, and a lot of it was brought about by half-witted crap they applauded.

Lovelyricepudding · 16/10/2022 09:08

That generation of women are amongst those standing up for women's rights. You may not see them because most women become invisible at that age.

I only heard the clip but I thought she was out of order. Saying "fuck you" at what? 8am? You might have it on in the car driving your kids as I often do around that time. She's an idiot. I don't know why grown adults are lauding her on Twitter.

Same goes for whoever it was that said "bollocks" on channel 4 news before the watershed.

There are boundaries of decency and acceptability for a reason. Boundaries some people feel unashamed about trampling. And no I don't care if I sound boring and old I'm saying this.

It's childish, and it's the kind of naughty 'rebellion' that costs comfortable people nothing.

FannyCann · 16/10/2022 09:40

She always struck me as someone who had a very strict upbringing (I don't actually know if this is true) and then suddenly discovered the joy of shocking her parents/family, probably when she got her first taste of freedom at uni, and hasn't outgrown it.

When I was about 6 or 7 I overheard a joke I didn't understand and when my parents had a drinks party soon after I went around the room offering crisps and telling the joke. Everyone went "Hahaha ...er that's not funny Fanny" and my mother got wind and I was sent to my room. I still remember the joke but I won't repeat it here. I have learnt to, mostly, restrain myself within the limits of propriety. But then I'm not an actress and don't make a living by drawing attention to myself.

WolverineBlueyy · 16/10/2022 09:52

Thanks for the transcript Dad, she handled it better than it was first made to sound. I'm not convinced Justin Webb should have gone there at all, considering how severely the response could have overshadowed an obit to Robbie Coltrane, given the news had only broken the evening before. In the circs she was right to try not to dwell?

Then again the Jeremy Hunt thing did for that anyway, so don't suppose it matters now.

Coltrane standing up for JKR was brilliant, though.

FrancescaContini · 16/10/2022 09:54

LizzieSiddal · 15/10/2022 09:51

Yes she was right about Hunt. She said that for the nation.

Agree. But sounds as if she knows nada about this particular issue - or wants to look as if she doesn’t. Shame.

lilyfire · 16/10/2022 09:55

She clearly thought she was off air when she said fuck as the interview had finished.
She was also sticking up for Robbie Coltrane sticking up for JKR.

sashagabadon · 16/10/2022 09:56

I’m not a Miriam fan. I think she is a very rude person and full of her own self importance and not particularly nice!

bingbummy · 16/10/2022 10:04

Actors' jobs don't end off screen. Especially if they work for a corporation like the BBC they're under contract on how to act outside too. Don't say anything about saville/gender ideology/prince andrew that goes against our shareholders etc.

Smilelesstalkmore · 16/10/2022 10:10

Yes, i agree that Miriam has realised that the 'lovably rude, completely bonkers' persona is a winner and is now running with it.

Montygone · 16/10/2022 10:13

Actors and entertainers never engage with the practicalities. It’s easy to be a liberal if you don’t consider the potential clash of rights.

GingerPushkin · 16/10/2022 10:17

she's childish and lapping up the "national treasure" label that seems to be thrown around for any dick of a certain age.
If there's a bandwagon, she's on it: anti- JK Rowling, anti-Tory, ant-fascist
If it was cool to be right wing, she be the first to nail her colours
I don't believe she gives a shit about anyone but herself

Cailin66 · 16/10/2022 10:24

ChagSameachDoreen · 15/10/2022 10:12

I can't abide Margolyes since reading her memoir, which should be subtitled "All the men I've blown."

She's vile.

I thought she was gay?

saraclara · 16/10/2022 10:31

Hmmph · 15/10/2022 10:35

I think it's ok that she doesn't have strong opinions and doesn't feel the need to have a side. Especially in an interview about Robbie Coltrane where it was inappropriate to try and get her debating trans.

Much better that she she doesn't know and says this than blindly jumps on one side or another. Or goes anti JK Rowling because she thinks it is the done thing.

I think it's always ok to be neutral and attacking her for not being GC is wrong. She is an actress not an MP and it's ok for her to not express her opinions.

That.

I think she's bonkers, but in the context of that interview I don't think there was anything remotely wrong with what she said. She was there to talk about someone who had just died. Why on earth would anyone in her place let the conversation be derailed into a trans debate? For once she acted sensibly and moved the conversation on as soon as she could.

Cosmic47 · 06/11/2022 15:53

Wow, snob much 🙄

I think she's fantastic and love that she speaks her mind, a national treasure 😊

Sausagenbacon · 06/11/2022 16:19

I used to like her. But now find her an absolute turn-off.

Cosmic47 · 06/11/2022 19:13

You also sound like a snob, I can't stand people like you who get offended over nothing, swearing is great 😂
