Any non captured charities out there?

It's my birthday coming up, a big one. I don't need anything and would like to do a birthday fundraiser, but all the charities I support appear to be captured. I am still paying monthly subscriptions, and I think they still do good work (Amnesty International, Action Aid, NSPCC).

I was going to do Action Aid but then saw their policy on trans-inclusion www.actionaid.org.uk/about-us/our-commitment-trans-inclusion. It may be that trans women and girls are very vulnerable in other countries, but in the UK they are less at risk than women and girls.

I'd really like to support a charity which supports biological women and girls please. Or vulnerable children. Any ideas?

I'd look at charities that do respite care (for young carers for example) or children's hospice care, or specific medical needs eg cancer. Less likely to be captured and greatly in need. Local to you could be good.
On a thread somewhere, someone mentioned comparing funding for a child brain cancer charity with mermaid and it was woeful in comparison.

Lumos?

SallyLockheart · 10/10/2022 20:07

I thought I would check a local hospice charity I support and guess what, it's in the middle of reviewing its policies to be more trans-inclusive.....

IloveHolby · 10/10/2022 20:07

I looked for Lumos but couldn't find it on Facebook fundraiser. I was also looking for my local MIND charity but that didn't come up.

Plan International know what a woman is.

Plan International know what a woman is.

They were looking promising but nope, they use 'sex assigned at birth' and something looking very much like a gender bread person FFS.

plan-international.org/srhr/lgbtiq-inclusion/

I feel like I'm going mad. I'm definitely down the rabbit hole and through the looking glass. Why do no charities think sex is real and see that women are oppressed and abused globally because of SEX not gender.

what about charities like dementia or age concern? surely they haven't been corrupted

JanieAllen · 10/10/2022 20:39

Please don't support Amnesty International. Actively evil - policy of saying pimps have a right to pimp women.

What about Vancouver Rape Relief?

Fantina · 10/10/2022 20:39

I think Women’s Aid have revised its position to something more biology based. I also give to Lumos.

blueybingo · 10/10/2022 20:42

Religious based charities? Christian Aid or Islamic Relief. I doubt they believe TWAW.

ThatshallotBaby · 10/10/2022 20:52

Women’s Aid?

Forgotthebins · 10/10/2022 20:56

On that genderbread section on the Plan International website, instead of explaining the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity, it would be more interesting if they explained the difference between biological sex and gender identity. That would say quite a lot. Like is their work about respecting and helping everybody (fine) or do they actually think biological sex doesn’t matter any more (not fine).

Refuge?
British Pregnancy Advisory Service?
A local food bank?

ControversialOpening · 10/10/2022 21:12

LGBA?

It's very hard to find a reliable charity, either locally, nationally or internationally. Save the Children and Oxfam have both allowed employees to behave very badly and while the RSPB is currently keen on the countryside (www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/10/rspb-not-ruling-out-direct-action-to-defend-nature-from-government-policy) it was less keen on respecting Lavinia Rhead's wishes to preserve her neighbourhood from development (www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jun/09/new-builds-birds-rspb)

Might there be a breakfast club/school holiday lunch initiative that you could support locally?

SMiRA is the national charity for selective mutism, an anxiety based condition where children are unable to speak in one setting it to one person, whilst being able to speak in another. Children with SM rarely get the help and support they need for their anxiety because they turn it inwards and don't cause problems in school. However, without early support SM can persist into adulthood and make daily life impossible. My adult child has SM and is unable to manage their finances, go to the doctor alone, live independently etc as they cannot advocate for themself.

Smira is a financially tiny charity and it's celebrating it's 30th birthday this month, facing having to close due to having no money. It only has one paid staff member but does amazing work with very little funding.

Please consider supporting them! They are on FB fundraising I think.

EstellaRijnveld · 10/10/2022 21:23

Support your local SEND & disability charities or Foodbank in your local area. The Big national ones are more likely to be captured and even after all the Mermaids drama they still don't learn.

CountryCocktail · 10/10/2022 21:25

I like GiveDirectly, It's quite a slim charity so a high % of the money donated goes to causes rather than marketing or politics.
Especially I like the ethos that people in poverty generally know what they need and by just giving them the money to help themselves you can do the most good for the most people.

JK Rowling has a charity.

Newcatbrowntail · 10/10/2022 22:42

You could support one of the many crowd funders, LGB Alliance, or Sex Matters or Lumos

Cattenberg · 10/10/2022 23:24

I don’t know much about The Fistula Foundation, but it provides life-changing medical care for some of the world’s most marginalised women.

IloveHolby · 11/10/2022 07:55

Thanks everyone. I’m considering pinning my GC colours to the mast and supporting LGB alliance or Sex Matters. Either that or my local food bank.
