Quote from his interview in The Times:

I couldn’t speak for what others have said or what she said, to be completely honest, but I’m often reminded, attending Comic Cons [fantasy conventions] in particular, that no one has single-handedly done more for bringing joy to so many different generations and walks of life. I’m constantly reminded of her positive work in that field and as a person. I’ve only had a handful of meetings with her but she has always been lovely. So I’m very grateful for that.
“I’m pro. I’m pro choice. I’m pro life. I’m pro discussion. I’m pro love. I don’t tend to pick sides. I won’t talk specifics but I enjoy reminding myself and others that a lot of my good friends have ways of life or personal decisions that I don’t necessarily agree with. We should enjoy celebrating each other’s differences.”

Funny how the Slytherin has more integrity and nuance than all those brave Gryffindors! (And yes, I know they’re not really in Hogwarts for those TRA’s who argue so disingenuously)

His sector is almost 100% captured.
This is brave

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 10/10/2022 07:41

Well, Tom did get sorted into gryffindor when he did the official pottermore test - much to his own disappointment!

But yes, full on hooray for him. Dignified, not chasing woke points, sincere. Well done!

zen1 · 10/10/2022 07:43

Good for him!

BiscuitLover3678 · 10/10/2022 07:44

I do love him

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 10/10/2022 07:46

Tom is gorgeousness and his relationship with Jason Isaac's is glorious. Very glad to read this and well done him for being a grown up about it all.

MassiveSalad22 · 10/10/2022 07:47

Well done him!! I honestly think most people in the real world - not online, not on Twitter, not on mumsnet, not on YouTube - think the same as him. Pro choice, live and let live. But no one ever really says it as CBA with the vitriol 😄

Skinnermarink · 10/10/2022 07:52

I really like him, saw him in a play recently in the West End, he was brilliant on stage, EW would never be able to pull off a theatre role.

Off topic , but was that 2:22? If so, is it worth going to see?

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 10/10/2022 07:57

I wonder if his personal identity isn't completely tied up with being a 'goodie', leaving him free to use his brain?

to be honest, what he's said is the bare minimum, the fact that it's brave is ridiculous.

<googles him>

he's 35! which means I feel slightly less bad about noting the fact that he's a very handsome man now

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 10/10/2022 07:57

I think I will put his autobiography "Beyond the Wand" on my Xmas list.

risefromyourgrave · 10/10/2022 07:57

I saw him in 2:22, he’s great and I loved the play itself. It’s written by Uncanny podcast bloke Danny ‘Bloody hell Ken’ Robins.

Absolutely worth going to see but the cast will have changed now. You can often get the stall seats for £15. It’s very well written.

Sharetoken for the interview here. Seems a really nice guy.

Thanks all - I see it’s playing until January (think The Unfriend takes over after that) so will try to get along to it.

littleburn · 10/10/2022 08:17

Good for him. He's meant to be very close friends with Emma Watson too.

This makes me feel better for my long standing crush on him 😂 already got his book on order!

Thanks @Igneococcus I read it in my news app so couldn’t share.

I think the key thing in that interview is the feeling that he doesn’t rely on his time in the HP films for his sense of self worth. Maybe he can reflect on its creator with a bit more distance than others involved in it?
From what I’ve seen of him on Twitter etc he is happy to plough his own furrow and disagree with things (politely, humorously and with good grace).

nilsmousehammer · 10/10/2022 11:42

Now THAT is how you reply professionally and tactfully to a difficult question without openly stabbing anyone in the back or trashing your career.

Unlike poor Emma, whose unfortunate decisions are now coming back to bite her, she seems mentioned in almost every article now following Mermaids' multiple and evolving safeguarding disasters.

I was just coming to post something like this! It's a very sensible take and while I can see why it could be considered 'brave' now, I think it's actually very prudent in both the immediate and medium term, because it just makes him sound reasonable and (genuinely!) kind.

I feel rather sorry for EW. I thought her public interventions following the initial JKR thing were ill-judged and immature, esp for someone who likes to posture as a feminist, but I think the backlash against her has been disproportionate too. It reminds me in that sense of the way that actual transphobia is often randomly blamed on lefty nonviolent feminists. She said some really stupid things but she's not the enemy IMO.

I love that he calls him Dad

TheClogLady · 10/10/2022 13:52

Both Jason Isaacs and Ralph Fiennes have previously refused to pile on to Jo.

Both played Slytherins so perhaps there is something in already being perceived as a baddie and thus not having a fear of being disliked?

Saucery · 10/10/2022 14:23

Is it to do with being good enough actors to recognise the difference between Made Up and Reality?

ladygindiva · 10/10/2022 14:37

Dd met him recently on a night out through mutual friends. Said he was very pleasant.
