Quote from his interview in The Times:

I couldn’t speak for what others have said or what she said, to be completely honest, but I’m often reminded, attending Comic Cons [fantasy conventions] in particular, that no one has single-handedly done more for bringing joy to so many different generations and walks of life. I’m constantly reminded of her positive work in that field and as a person. I’ve only had a handful of meetings with her but she has always been lovely. So I’m very grateful for that.
“I’m pro. I’m pro choice. I’m pro life. I’m pro discussion. I’m pro love. I don’t tend to pick sides. I won’t talk specifics but I enjoy reminding myself and others that a lot of my good friends have ways of life or personal decisions that I don’t necessarily agree with. We should enjoy celebrating each other’s differences.”

Funny how the Slytherin has more integrity and nuance than all those brave Gryffindors! (And yes, I know they’re not really in Hogwarts for those TRA’s who argue so disingenuously)

EW would never be able to pull off a theatre role.

She's been pretty awful in whatever I've seen her in subsequent to the HP film series. She pretty much huffed & gabbled her way through the BBC adaptation of Ballet Shoes a few years ago. Really spoilt the programme for me.

doubleshotcappuccino · 10/10/2022 14:52

As brilliant in his words as he was in 2.22 which is well worth a watch

BitossiBlues · 10/10/2022 15:05

Thanks for the referral to 2.22. Uncanny is my guilty pleasure, so I'd love to see it. Is it suitable for young teens?

However, had to eye-roll hard to this from the website:

LILY ALLEN
BEST PERFORMER IN A FEMALE IDENTIFYING ROLE IN A PLAY
WHATSONSTAGE AWARDS 2022

JAKE WOOD
BEST SUPPORTING PERFORMER IN A MALE IDENTIFYING ROLE IN A PLAY
WHATSONSTAGE AWARDS 2022

Isn't he the only one who has managed to keep in regular contact with the rest of the main cast?

Always liked him. (Had loads of sympathy for Malfoy by the 6th HP film too) He seems so genuine and down to earth and the way that he worded this proves it.

bellinisurge · 10/10/2022 15:27

Good for Tom. And, bloody brave.
What was that about standing up to your friends...

Both Jason Isaacs and Ralph Fiennes have previously refused to pile on to Jo.

Both played Slytherins so perhaps there is something in already being perceived as a baddie and thus not having a fear of being disliked?

One of the things that strikes me about all of those actors is I know very little about their politics.

There are some things I might guess, from what I do know about them, but they don't really seem to take the view that being in the public eye means people want to know about your political and social opinions.

I don't know that it has much to do with being an evil character, I do think they are people who see their vocation as acting rather than being famous. And RF and JI are both intelligent enough and I think have an education that would lead them to recognize complexity that isn't well addressed by popular social activism.

TheClogLady · 10/10/2022 16:06

I expect you are correct.

It’s classic British thespian stuff to keep the actor’s personality rather private in order to let the characters portrayed shine.

Perhaps having so many scenes with JI (and presumably plenty with RF too) has given Tom the inspiration to be more of an actor, and less of a celeb?

This is a really great point. I think I could accurately tell you which parties they support, but their discretion around politics makes for a change, and I'm happy to not know. Too many people make blanket political identity their sole one. Pleasantly surprised about TF too!

Oh ffs.

I demand a category for me to enter of 'best actor in a hamster identifying role in a play'. Pass the pile of awards please.

BaileySharp · 10/10/2022 19:51

Nice mature response from Tom Felton there :) he comes across as a genuinely nice human being

AbcMurders · 10/10/2022 21:28

It made me laugh that she’s more supported by the Slytherins, Gryffindors always seemed a bit arrogant and self righteous

BellaAmorosa · 10/10/2022 21:47

dandelionthistle · 10/10/2022 12:29

I was just coming to post something like this! It's a very sensible take and while I can see why it could be considered 'brave' now, I think it's actually very prudent in both the immediate and medium term, because it just makes him sound reasonable and (genuinely!) kind.

I feel rather sorry for EW. I thought her public interventions following the initial JKR thing were ill-judged and immature, esp for someone who likes to posture as a feminist, but I think the backlash against her has been disproportionate too. It reminds me in that sense of the way that actual transphobia is often randomly blamed on lefty nonviolent feminists. She said some really stupid things but she's not the enemy IMO.

@dandelionthistle
I agree.
We mustn't fall into the trap of always blaming women, or blaming women more. Applies to Susie Green as well - let's not forget that she seems to have been trying to placate her husband, who himself appears to have done nothing to prevent the premature medical and surgical interventions on his child.

Saucery · 10/10/2022 14:23

Is it to do with being good enough actors to recognise the difference between Made Up and Reality?

😂😂

QuimReaper · 10/10/2022 22:09

Spot on! Grin

thirdfiddle · 11/10/2022 00:42

Now I want to go and rewatch the interviews on the early HP DVDs. I remember thinking at the time TF seemed impressively articulate and like he was having a lot of fun playing the baddie. Tho I think if I watch them now my kids are older they're just going to all seem incredibly young and cute.

doubleshotcappuccino · 11/10/2022 06:37

@nilsmousehammer my twin 15 year old DS loved 2.22.. it's more jump frights than anything too harrowing .. they loved it.. we got tickets from the booth in Leicester Square just before the performance .. got a good price and decent tickets - the Chinese lunch cost us more than the tickets but that's another story .. the moral of is look at the menu before you sit !

WahineToa · 11/10/2022 07:04

That is the professional, mature and tolerant response that I would hope for from anyone but am very glad still to read it. Well done ti him, he’s a fine actor. Not many of the child actors were, if I’m being completely honest.

nauticant · 11/10/2022 08:56

He's being interviewed on the Tpday Programme on Radio 4 right now.

nauticant · 11/10/2022 09:01

The JKR question was only squeezed in at the end and the response was he views Potter as something that's brought people together and he's grateful to JKR for having created it.

risefromyourgrave · 11/10/2022 09:23

I wonder if the fact that he was the one who was being asked about JKR when the Warner Bros rep stepped in to deflect the question made him think about a reasonable response?

OP posts:
ButtonSister · 11/10/2022 09:38

I thought he was less than positive about JKR in his radio 4 interview this morning (last few minutes of the Today programme). Didn't speak her name and referred to the books being "made", not written

bellinisurge · 11/10/2022 12:21

As long as he didn't say "burn the witch" or "she's disassociated from HP" it's basically a win

Asparagoose · 11/10/2022 17:58

I see there has been a pile-on and all the trans activists are having a go at him now.

Yup.

Apparently if you're not with them you're against them.

No wonder people are afraid to stand up for JKR. They will try and cancel him.
